@Babybel90 yep that is so true! I know they’ve tried to be ambiguous with charlottes social status primarily I think to allow Andrew Davies have her behave in ways that no woman of her class would behave - being alone with men, disappearing off to London, playing cricket with the men but at the end of the day, she is gentry & Stringer is a working class guy with no money & no home of his own. He has prospects but in Austen world actual solid income trumps potential any day

The love triangle plot hasn’t worked on multiple levels - not enough time spent on it to make it look as if Charlotte is in anyway torn, character development, realism. It’s just been a waste of time tbh

Kit19 · 10/10/2019 16:23

@MonChatEstMagnifique so true Grin worryingly I know want this more than I should 😆

englishmummyinwales · 10/10/2019 16:40

I am old enough (just) to remember Ken Dodd and the Diddymen and that’s who young Stringer’s hat reminds me of every time.

ScreamingValenta · 10/10/2019 16:51

Grin englishmummyinwales. Now picturing Charlotte running down the cobbles of Sanditon chased by Stringer with a diddy man puppet and a tickling stick!

Kit19 · 10/10/2019 17:20

I’m afraid I’m now starting to wonder if Stringer has another smaller hat for you know little Stringer 👀 which is probably a sign a need to get off the internet 😆

I shall miss this thread when it finishes on Sunday!!

kazzaD66 · 10/10/2019 17:43

Loving the hat chat Grin

Another thing that has been bugging me.....I know Theo is a swarthy chap but he always seems to have a 5 o'clock shadow. I'm not necessarily complaining about Sidney's dashing looks but I wasn't aware that gentlemen at that time had designer stubble in polite society Hmm

Babybel90 · 10/10/2019 17:50

@kazzaD66 DH, who wasn’t watching, looked up from his computer game while the three ‘brothers’ were on screen and commented that their mum must’ve had a Spanish milkman 🤣

MouseBatMummy · 10/10/2019 17:58

Ooh new clip on twitter teasing a wedding...but who is bride and groom??

JaneJeffer · 10/10/2019 18:08

Dicky Mint or Young Stringer? You decide

Do you reckon a decoy wedding? Minor character to lead us into s2

Babybel90 · 10/10/2019 18:20

So episode 8 is going to have a funeral, ball and wedding in it and they spent an entire episode on a cricket match? Hmm

JaneJeffer · 10/10/2019 18:24

As far as I know there was no definite plan for a second series so there will have to be some kind of conclusion to the story.

OP posts:
englishmummyinwales · 10/10/2019 18:50

@JaneJeffer yes! And this is why I have not been able to take young Stringer seriously as a romantic rival. A Diddymen hat and excessively long sideburns- he was doomed from the start!

I think Andrew Davies is too much of a people pleaser to keep the “Sidlotte” (a term I saw bandied about on the Sanditon FB page. I nearly vomited) storyline open. I am confident that my shallow desire for their union will be fulfilled. The unfinished storyline will be something less significant but interesting enough to make you wonder. I hope it’s something to do with Clara. Or Lady Susan.

Having said that, I’ve been completely wrong in almost all of my predictions!

FatherFintanFay · 10/10/2019 18:58

I take a very dim view of people who make up "shipping" tags for fictional couples, especially if they're piss poor ones like Sidlotte. It doesn't even work. They could have used Charney or The Parwoods. I am very old, but I think it's ok to insist that people keep such Twitter wankery away from Jane Austen.

Now that Stringer appears to be a Diddyman, we might see his story arc ending with his imprisonment for tax evasion. Diddy pay? Diddy hell (joke copyright - Jasper Carrott).

ScreamingValenta · 10/10/2019 19:03

Sanditon II - Escape to Knotty Ash. Stringer and the Parker brothers head north to create a new 'Diddyland' theme park in Liverpool.

It's not really a triangle, that's why it doesn't work. There's Charlotte and Sidney, either arguing or trying not to admit to having any feelings, and then there's Stringer, who has a massive crush on a woman because she has a vague awareness of architecture and he doesn't know her well enough to get annoyed by her.

EBearhug · 11/10/2019 00:03

But neither Charlotte nor Sidney seem to have the slightest awareness of Stringer’s interest - Sidney just appeared momentarily puzzled at the comment about not winning the prize he wanted, and then didn't think further about it, and Charlotte simply has no idea. If there's any triangle, it's Eliza, Sidney and Charlotte, because they're at least all aware (to some extent,) of the others in it.

lululup · 11/10/2019 07:43

I'm not remotely bothered about period authenticity although am a huge JA fan. It's a puff piece but I just love this series and think there's a fantastic chemistry between Charlotte and Sidney. Brilliant casting, love the smouldering looks etc. I am hugely and inappropriately invested! I have developed a full blown crush on Theo James, he's totally gorgeous. I love their scenes together. I also like the Esther and Babbington.

newgame989 · 11/10/2019 08:12

Esther and Babbington has worked by far the best, as a believable couple. If this hadn’t had the Austen tag I’d have been more comfortable with it, but still Charlotte’s character needed a bit more.

Babybel90 · 11/10/2019 08:34

@lululup personally I just don’t get the Sidney and Charlotte thing, he’s been disparaging, hostile, unkind and downright rude to her, he mistook her for a maid when he must have known she was nothing of the sort, when she apologised to him he told her he didn’t care about her thoughts or feelings in the slightest, instead of just accepting the apology, and he screamed at her in the street. He hasn’t even been able to keep up the pretence of basic civility to her until she ‘proved’ herself worthy of being spoken to like a human.

If it were me, no matter how many smouldering looks he threw my way after that I wouldn’t be able to forget the disrespectful way he treated me at first, and I’d take it as a sign he could turn quite nasty.

I’m hoping for a twist ending!

lululup · 11/10/2019 10:00

That's bringing a rationality to it that I've long left behind!

Kit19 · 11/10/2019 10:21

@EBearhug yes yes this!! Honestly if Andrew Davies hasn’t told us he’d put one in & the PR ppl hadn’t put stuff out about it, I would just have thought stringer had an unrequited crush. Love triangle is definitely trades description!

@Babybel90 that sums up exactly how I see it. I’m genuinely baffled as to what is hot about being shouted at or belittled. I’ve no time for “brooding” either as brooding tends to mean moody af. If my daughter told me someone had behaved like Sidney to them I’d be warning her off him so hard......plus I STILL don’t get what he’s supposed to see in her. It’s like Andrew Davies has tried to update Lizzie & darcy without remotely understanding what made them work

I just can’t find men who are playing asshats hot. Leo played a misogynistic violent men’s rights activist in “clique” and while Leo is hot, his character was utterly awful & I just couldn’t find him attractive in it no matter how many times they showed him sweatily pumping weights.

JaneJeffer · 11/10/2019 10:25

I just don't think they are suited at all and in the long term will be a disaster. Run Charlotte!

OP posts:
lululup · 11/10/2019 10:26

OMG! I think they're brilliantly suited and it's true long lasting love. I'm swooning here which is very unlikely cynical me.
