stringer’s desperate love is even less convincing as he’s spent hardly anytime with her.

No chance for reality to disillusion him...

ScreamingValenta · 04/10/2019 12:22

I completely agree, FatherFintan - if that happens, I shall ignore series 2 on principle.

It's hard to see how Stringer's storyline will be resolved - no obvious candidate for him to pair off with, as Charlotte is the only one he's interacted with. I hope Davies doesn't kill him off!

Loopytiles · 04/10/2019 12:41

I hope Stringer gets a fat promotion to a great job in London offered by a rich visitor for the regatta.

And that Miss Lambe decides to stay single for the foreseeable, and keep and use her wealth.

ScreamingValenta · 04/10/2019 12:44

YY to Miss Lambe staying single for the present. I think she's had enough of being touted about like a commodity.

Kit19 · 04/10/2019 13:07

The whole “love triangle” hasn’t really worked at all. To work we’d have to feel Charlotte was genuinely torn between two different but equal men. Instead Sidney & Charlotte have 75% of the screen time devoted to it & are fleshed out as far as Andrew Davies seems capable of fleshing out as characters. Stringer is just a nice handsome lower class guy who we can only assume doesn’t get out much. He’s spent hardly any time with Charlotte at all. He’s main character it’s seems to be Not Being Sidney. If I had been writing it I’d have had a greater contrast - made stringer more physical, more earthy, lots of humping heavy things around & sweaty topless shots to offer a proper contrast to the gentry (how dare you suggest that would be purely for gratuitous reasons 😆)

It doesn’t matter if stringer is left single, he’s poor and therefore Does Not Count. I assume he’ll be there purely to throw another obstacle in the way of Sidney & Charlotte in the “misunderstanding of the week” Abd then disappear

Totally agree with miss lambe staying single & having control of her own life for once

newgame989 · 04/10/2019 14:33

I like this fleshed out version @kit19 and absolutely agree about Miss Lambe, another one you'd hope would grow a bit!

ScreamingValenta · 04/10/2019 16:49

Yes, Kit's version would've been much better!

Unless, of course, it's all a gigantic bluff, and when Sidney asks for the honour of Charlotte's hand in marriage, she tells him she's tired of his immense ego and shoutiness and is riding off instead to break new bounds as a female architect with Stringer.

EBearhug · 04/10/2019 18:25

She has to marry him, because she's seen him in the buff, and that's just too compromising if they don't end up married.

FatherFintanFay · 04/10/2019 19:05

kit19 the lower class types usually get tossed a similarly lower class spouse at the end, i.e. Miss Smith and Mr Martin, but I can't think of any such women we've seen that could be thrown at Young Stringer as a consolation prize. Perhaps Big Suze will bring a retinue of lady's maids with her to the regatta and he'll get together with one of them.

Awwwwww :( he’s going to be rejected isn’t he

Rhubarb01 · 05/10/2019 14:06

Kit19 that clip from Sanditon immediately reminded me of the moment in "Emma" mistakenly encourages Harriet Smith to consider Mr Knightley a potential suitor, because she imagines that her friend is talking about someone else. Obviously, Charlotte and Young Stringer are at cross-purposes. It doesn't look promising for him, but you never can tell.

Once again, as others have said, I can't imagine even someone like Charlotte would be so innocent and unworldly that she would discuss a romantic attachment with another young man.

Rhubarb01 · 05/10/2019 14:08

Not enough Emma's in that first sentence - I meant the moment in "Emma" when Emma mistakenly encourages Harriet Smith etc...

Actually, I'm beginning to think that Young Stringer was modelled on Robert Martin.

Just putting this out there for anyone now on Team Sidney. God I’m so shallow. He had me at “but I don’t want to dance with them”.

Poor Mr Stringer...

WineOrGinOrBoth · 05/10/2019 18:34

I’m certain in some cultures today marriage may well follow marriage. Awful. I hope I’m wrong.

Kit19 · 05/10/2019 19:27

Bluntly Leo suter is handsome af and I’m shallow 😆😆 always team stringer

FatherFintanFay · 05/10/2019 20:30

Kit19 yup, that's my position. Also he's not a rude dick. I don't ask for much.

Kit19 · 05/10/2019 22:58

Yep! I’ve had a bit of wine & any guy who’d been as rude to me as Sidney was to Charlotte would have been very quickly kicked to the kerb

He can tell me off in the street any day, lucky women at that brothel. He'd have been my pick to play Christian Grey. Wink

I couldn't agree more......

englishmummyinwales · 06/10/2019 19:12

30 something men would have been expected to know what they were doing on their wedding night, no? I suspect that it was the discreet and acceptable way to do it. The girls would be well fed, relatively clean, with teeth. Better than what you might encounter down a dark alley. I’m speculating wildly of
course!

Really looking forward to it tonight. It’s got me through sitting through my son’s heavily defeated football match and an afternoon of clearing the garden.
