Thank the lord Jamie is gone... has he ever seen a cake, let alone baked one!?

I was pretty miffed last week that they chose the other guy (the one with the man-bun) to go instead of Jamie as Jamie was consistently shite in week 1 whereas the other guy pulled it out the bag for the Showstopper and still got the boot!

DontFeedTheCatCake · 03/09/2019 21:20

Yes ageing I agree. I can see viewing figures dropping off.

ageingdisgracefully · 03/09/2019 21:32

What is it that's so different though? I can't quite put my finger on it.

Maybe because the contestants are younger than usual?

Pink Jumper Woman is really annoying me.

And as for Jamie - how the Jeff did he qualify?

Wolfcub · 03/09/2019 21:33

I think it’s all just a bit stiff and overproduced. It’s lost it’s joy

CandyLeBonBon · 03/09/2019 21:34

Same @ageingdisgracefully - it feels a bit forced somehow

SouthWestmom · 03/09/2019 21:43

I like the wedding sculpture don't like Elena (sp?) quite like Rosie don't like Alice like the lady with short black hair from Wales

SouthWestmom · 03/09/2019 21:44

Jamie reminds me of that taxi driver winging an interview on tv

SouthWestmom · 03/09/2019 21:45

Like he missed the Take Me Out studio and ended up in the tent

Thehagonthehill · 03/09/2019 21:52

I haven't warmed to any of them yet and yes the vibe has changed but not sure why.

CocoLoco87 · 03/09/2019 22:06

They've gone for a younger cohort of bakers so there's less life experience there. Yes yes you've lived in New Zealand, well done, but also everyone is talking about their nan's recipes rather than ones they've created.

It seems more forced this year with the innuendos too. I'm not sure how Jamie made it in but pp's comment about the Take Me Out studio made me Grin

What I want to see is someone 'accidentally' taking someone else's custard from the fridge. Now that was a good piece of Bake Off drama Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/09/2019 22:40

Anyone else tired of extravagant sculptures in bake off at all week one/two/three?

Yes, I am!

I thought you were going to enter this year Gremlins. Or was that Masterchef?

I can remember you had ambitions.

Graphista · 03/09/2019 23:44

2.5 hours for a fruitcake?! That's insane!!

Ouch "a bit OCD" don't like her!

"Nooo no no we do not feed people bread warmed by snakes. Just no" my thought precisely! Wtf!

Aren't man buns a bit...outdated?

"Where’s the grandmother who confidently turns out all the standards without recourse to a recipe, whilst having several other hobbies and wrangling many grandchildren ?

All a bit samey so far." I agree! Change in "demographics" blatant ageism down to the move to ch4?

Totally off topic but vibrato in choral singing?! No!

"Doubly so if granny is dead / foreign." You old cynic spotted zebra - love it 😂

Graphista · 03/09/2019 23:44

Bagadverts - it's extremely tight imo! I'm not a massive baker but I've made enough over the years to know a fruit cake really does need a decent amount of time. Even 3.5 hours would have been a challenge.

"There should be a parallel tent where on of the judges does the technical in real time as well" love this idea but make both of them do it!

"Which one is the 12 year old? They all look 12 to me." Aside from lorry driver man I'm struggling to spot anyone over 35!!

"George's frosted tips were fab in the 80s! Bless him" a comment that befits your username the80sweregreat there's a fab quote in George's autobiography "bare" where he says something like "the hairdryer was doing overtime, sometimes I was on the front page sometimes it was princess Diana sometimes I think they just got us confused" 😂

My dream childhood birthday cake would have been a magic faraway tree one with popover biscuits? Wrote that before Henry appeared too!

"after baking one successful Victoria sandwich and a tray of scones." I'm a fair baker but cannot do scones to save my life! It's the decoration I'd struggle with I don't have a delicate touch, featherings my limit really. I have 3 friends who are "professional" cake makers (I wouldn't say bakers as they only do cakes not breads or pastries) 2 do from home and mainly for friends/family/word of mouth mainly birthdays with the occasional milestone anniversary cake, but one who is actually my friends daughter has recently opened her own shop after starting off like the others, but she really is a baker and her decoration is stunning! Even including glittery sponge! How the hell you do that I don't know but the effect is awesome!

Alice reminds me of rosamund pike - not a good thing

Somehow I missed the magic faraway tree cake! Anyone got a pic they can show me?

Djangor3725 might be they just didn't show it being made or they're allowed to bring in pre made fondant they've made themselves?

Graphista · 03/09/2019 23:45

Oooh I love fig rolls!

Cookies are NOT biscuits

Neither are millionaire shortbreads - biscuits should be eaten with a max 2 bites and if your gobs big enough to do that with millionaire shortbread it's too big! 😂

"its charm was the broad age range and mix of bakers from different worlds." Totally agree! And "opposites attract" friendships would appear like a hippy oap becoming bffs with a twinset & pearls Tory voting 19 yr old!

Skinnychip · 04/09/2019 00:10

Did anyone see that Rahul is going to be on I'm a celeb...? 😱😱 sorry if this has been mentioned previously!!

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 04/09/2019 09:56

I still like Rosie. She's my favourite so far, but also like Michelle. Not a fan of Alice, she's giving me Sophie vibes from a couple of series ago.

Kitsandkids · 04/09/2019 14:07

In previous series any innuendos have been (or seemed) accidental. Now they’re purposely doing them, Paul is purposely laughing to show he’s a good sport or whatever and it just feels so forced and fake. And I know marriages break down and it’s not always anyone’s fault but I can’t look at Paul in the same way after his affairs and younger girlfriend. I just don’t like him at all and so I don’t really care about what he says about anyone’s bakes. And Prue is very nice but I just miss Mary. She always found something nice to say about even the worst baking disasters. And though Mel and Sue did sometimes irritate me I thought they seemed to naturally gain more rapport with the bakers and I just don’t think Noel and Sandi have any chemistry together.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 04/09/2019 15:04

You mean wouldn't-say-boo-to-a-goose Rahul? Bet he whimpers and winces all the way through and then wins it.

shadypines · 04/09/2019 19:42

The Goth lady's obsession with Halloween is already making my foot itch............Make it stop.

Skyejuly · 04/09/2019 19:50

Alice and Halloween lady are so annoying.

shadypines · 04/09/2019 19:50

the vibe has changed but not sure why.

Every year the editing gets more beserk, cut to 0.2 seconds of Prue, 0.2 seconds of Sandi, 0.2 seconds of a baker.......it's like the opening ten minutes of a James Bond film but instead of excitement you just end up confused and on the brink of an epileptic fit or a migraine.

Skinnychip · 04/09/2019 22:08

Omg i said the same, i feel like such an old person!! It was like trying to watch baking while on a rollercoaster!

RedForShort · 05/09/2019 08:02

Goth lady's witches' fingers where ugly, and not just because they were witches' fingers.

Welsh woman and Star Baker's first bakes were amazing looking.

ageingdisgracefully · 05/09/2019 09:00

I'm feeling like an old person too.

I can't seem to relate to this at all..am I really that old and out of touch?

Paul seems to have fallen flat as well. Prue is trying, but coming across like sh'es not enjoying it.

Where's the rapport and the innuendo? It's almost as if everyone's afraid to take the piss.

How's Extra Slice going to look on Friday i wonder?

DontFeedTheCatCake · 05/09/2019 09:12

For me, this week probable be my last year of watching, for lots of reasons:

I like Pru, but there's no chemistry between her and Paul. He flounders about now, dishing out too many handshakes or trying to come across to hard. Mary always kept him in check, she could shoot him down with a withering look if needed, but they did appear to actually get on well.

Neither Pru nor Paul are warm, that's gone and had affected the whole gentle vibe of the show.

Individually Noel and Sandy are likeable, but they just don't have the warmth together that years of friendship gave Mel and Sue.

Mel and Sue appeared to genuinely care about the contestants and build relationships with them through the series.

Noel and Sandy's dressing up and puns feel forced and scripted.

The innuendoes are forced and in your face.

The demographic this year is far too young, it's Bake Off, not bloody Love Island. They've got that badly wrong. There has always been a mix of ages which made the programme feel real rather than cast. The depth of experience has gone, and the programme is all the worse for it.

The editing is too choppy. It makes watching less comfortable, which is what we all loved about Bake Off
