AJ hasn’t come out. He has just said he doesn’t want to put a label on anything, which is fair enough. But he hasn’t said he’s gay either. Or bisexual.

I agree that being camp doesn’t mean someone is gay, likewise some of the most “macho” men can be gay! But there is something about Curtis that seems at odds with how he is presenting himself. That makes my gaydar twitch. But who knows.

Maybe we’ll have the first coming out on love island?!

I can’t particularly warm to Amy to be honest. I’m not sure why.

Whatevermission · 10/06/2019 08:01

I think it will become undeniable that it IS racist, the more series there are

mumto2babyboys · 10/06/2019 08:01

Yeah same it's not the gay thing or camp thing it's that Curtis comes across so disingenuous and there are weeks left to go when I suspect he is just in it to win it.

Some where else aj himself talks about how he had to wait til he had reached a certain level of fame before he could come out, but I have to go make breakfasts now and it is all very media managed aj being bi, it's a shame aj couldn't just say I'm Bi/gay at the start of his career

HollySniffs · 10/06/2019 08:19

Amber and Michael, would love them to fall for each other 😍, would make beeeyoootiful babies.

I mentioned I though Curtis was in the closet way up thread or maybe even the first thread can't remember. It didn't go down too well. I can see him coming out for the media attention once the LI scrutiny/attention dies down.

Noddy = Anton, yes!

I don't agree it's racist. The show is literally all about looks and Yewande is not attractive to me personally and clearly the other boys in the villa who May also not find Amy or Anna attractive which is fine too. She is clearly very intelligent and seems lovely but that's not the point of the show. I hate the fact people assume it's racist to not find the only black woman attractive!

unique1986 · 10/06/2019 09:28

I'd say the shows more homophobic than racist.
The show never let's non British people on though.

itswinetime · 10/06/2019 09:35

There is no chemistry between Amy and Curtis I agree it comes across very like they are trying to be the perfect couple to win I agree. I'm not big fans of them because I find it all very fake.

I think his falseness pushing a relationship that is a bit fake being the 'perfect' man is setting of alarms for people. I don't think it's his sexuality (he says he is into girls I will believe him) it's everything else.

boooey · 10/06/2019 09:39

I don’t think it’s racist. Yewande’s in a similar situation to Dr Alex last year, or even Callum this year.
She’s not naturally flirty from what we’ve seen, is she trying to make an effort around the guys she finds attractive? Does she actually fancy anyone? We don’t know.
Maybe this show is not for her. The other guys aren’t competing for Amy it Anna either.
Each year tend to swarm around 1 or 2 of the girls in particular. Last year Megan. In the past it has been a brunette but I may be wrong.
Again I think the guys this year are pretty poor - if tommy gets to the end I don’t think I’ll watch it.

Zampa · 10/06/2019 10:12

Love Island isn't overtly racist but it does help perpetuate society's notion of what beauty is.

IMO the general perception of beauty is the Western norm; dark skin and wider noses aren't seen to be beautiful. Amber is black and is perceived as attractive and that could be due to her lighter skin and finer features.

Doesn't make people racist for not finding Yewande attractive but it does show that we need more BAME role models out there, showing a different standard of beauty.

Sagradafamiliar · 10/06/2019 10:13

Yewande is supermodelesque and seems a laugh to boot.
Anton is getting desperate with his 'operations', if you need to plot to get a girl, you're doing it wrong.
Tommy is rough so I'm not surprised he just wants a trophy wife to cheer him on and churn out a million kids for him. I was cringing so hard as he was clearly trying to be like joey Essex last night- trying to start up new 'words' and pretending to not know how to pour water onto a tea bag. MM clearly finds his lines laughable.

nickymanchester · 10/06/2019 10:19

Just talking about racism it stopped and made me think about Asian people.

I honestly cannot remember seeing any Asian people on LI at all.

So I did a bit of digging and found this on Huffpost talking about last year's show:-

"The show is now in its fourth season, however when you look back, out of 97 islanders, there has been a total of 17 people of colour on the show. Among them, two have had South Asian origins – Omar Sultani and Malin Andersson (who is mixed Sri Lankan and Swedish)"

So there are significantly more black and mixed people on the show than make up the UK population but hardly any South Asian and no East Asian people on the show.

I was reading that the show reaches out to people via instagram etc to get them to take part in the show. Is this right?

If that is the case are they contacting Asian people and are being turned down by them or are the producers of the show simply not even trying to get Asians on the show or even deliberately making the decision to exclude Asians?

I think that is where some of the real concerns about racism lie.

movingwiththelightson · 10/06/2019 10:34

Every year I can never get over how old they all look. Tommy was still a teenager a mere month ago Confused They always look so much older than RL 20/21-year-olds that it’s easy to forgot how young a lot of them really are.

Darlin · 10/06/2019 10:38

I think Curtis is bi but isn't ready to come out yet.

I too get a little fake feeling from a lot of the islanders this year, Tommy since the start but now Curtis too. He gets too much air time so maybe that's what's annoying me.

I hope Amber prefers Michael over the new guy.

MoominMantra · 10/06/2019 11:30

Yeah, Tommy could easily be 25 but since his dad was teaching him to do bare knuckle boxing at 5 years old, it's not really surprising that he looks older than his years.

Mrsplod · 10/06/2019 12:13

Yewande is not attractive to me either, her wig is awful & her mouth is huge! Finding this series very dull, if it doesn't liven up I think I'll give up.

movingwiththelightson · 10/06/2019 12:36

I’d have thought somebody so openly and comfortably camp would happily also be openly gay? I don’t see why he’d be hiding in the closet, he must know how he comes across and people must have commented before and mistaken him for gay?

Agree it’s pretty appalling Tommy can’t make a cup of tea or prepare food Blush He has traveller roots doesn’t he? I remember from the gypsy wedding series how very patriarchal the culture seems. Girls expected to stay virgins until they are married off at 17 to men in their 30s (who have all lived their lives and had their fun) then raise children and cook/clean with no freedom of their own whilst the blokes go off and do their thing. Maybe not always the case but it’s certainly how it came across on telly so could explain why Tommy is used to female family members doing everything for him.

Zampa · 10/06/2019 13:11

Please can we all be a bit careful with some of the Traveller stereotypes that are popping up on this thread?

We don't think all people from Essex are like the people on TOWIE so remember that not all Travellers are like the people on My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

movingwiththelightson · 10/06/2019 13:19

Oh yes I agree the TV series probably doesn’t totally and accurately reflect the reality but I assume there must be some truth in how the gender roles are portrayed. All of the traveller girls I remember from school all seemed to leave after year 11, no further education and were married with a baby at 18, I did wonder how many of them had really had the freedom to decide whether they actually wanted that? But again that’s my limited experience and I’m sure nowadays it’s not always the case.

BenWillbondsPants · 10/06/2019 13:29

I think Yewande is absolutely stunning, her face is beautiful.

movingwiththelightson · 10/06/2019 13:31

I think Yewande is stunning also.

Really don’t find any of the guys that attractive this year. Think there needs to be more new faces soon as it’s all a bit dull currently.

tessiegirl · 10/06/2019 13:34

Do we think yewande is wearing a wig?

Yamayo · 10/06/2019 13:35

I quite like Sherif.
Love the way he was genuinely shocked that Tommy couldn't make an effing cup of tea- and then taking the piss out of the outdoors shower.
Considering his age I find him a lot more mature than most of the guys.

carmenbea · 10/06/2019 13:36

I don't think Yewande is pretty. Lucie and Amber are very pretty. Amy and Anna I don't find attractive either. Doesn't make me racist.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/06/2019 13:45

Lucy and Amber are the only girls I find attractive, Curtis and Joe for the boys.
