I've just read this harrowing but excellent interview with Shane Meadows about the experience he had as a young child which prompted him to write the The Virtues. It also offers some insight into why he has deliberately chosen a slower pace and less dialogue than his previous work.

I think he's a genuine artist.

It’s well worth reading that interview. Thanks for sharing BOF. It’s as I assumed- the source of this series, his own abuse as a child. He presents it so well in his work. It must have been very painful for him to make this one.

I really love this programme. I can't believe there is only one episode left though and can't imagine where it will go in the episode. It feels like they haven't told us much so far.

Loved the youth club tits thing too and him putting the lippy on. His sister bollocking them both was pretty funny.

Apolloanddaphne · 31/05/2019 21:13

I love the slowness of it. It all feels so very real. I really feel empathy with all the characters, warts and all.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 31/05/2019 21:20

The lippy scene made me sad for Joesph. He clearly had/has this really fun side to his personality but he can’t access it without drinking and he can’t drink because he goes too far when he does. Sober he seems permanently subdued. He suppresses a lovely part of his personality. It’s sad.

SapatSea · 01/06/2019 15:26

ILove really well put.

Youth club grade t*ts made me laugh.

louise5754 · 02/06/2019 21:40

His sister was funny. Do you think she was sticking to a script? She seemed like she was just going for it Wink

ILoveMaxiBondi · 02/06/2019 23:27

I think in the article BOF linked upthread, Shane meadows says he gave the actors a loose leash as far as ad libbing went so I’d say it’s likely she did just go for it in those scenes.

louise5754 · 03/06/2019 14:32

I@ILoveMaxiBondi 👍🏻

louise5754 · 03/06/2019 14:33

I can't believe the final episode is on Wednesday. I think the 3 episodes so far could be summed up in one.

LoafofSellotape · 04/06/2019 23:54

Youth club tits Grin

This series is excellent,am going to read the article now, thanks Smile

LoafofSellotape · 04/06/2019 23:55

No way!Shock

GrimSisters · 05/06/2019 21:21

Only 20 minutes in and so far I've laughed and cried. What an emotional rollercoaster.

Mamaslave18 · 05/06/2019 21:48

Is anybody else struggling to hear the dialogue?? My tv is turned right up but I can’t make much of it out.

moveoverhogger · 05/06/2019 21:52

Yes Mama I'm struggling too, am having to really concentrate

GraceMarks · 05/06/2019 21:55

Put the subtitles on! I have to do that anyway because of my cloth ears, but especially with this.

It's unbearably tense. Poor Joe, poor Dinah, and poor Shane (just read the interview). I hope it's not going to go where I think it might be.

Dulra · 05/06/2019 21:55

Yeah dialogue is very mumbled but I'm still gripped
Just realised it's on until 10.30

purpleme12 · 05/06/2019 21:58

I've got the Tele right up and the subtitles on but then I always have them on!

Rollergirl11 · 05/06/2019 22:07

It’s very tense but also a bit drawn out too. Craigy crying all the time is irritating.

Rollergirl11 · 05/06/2019 22:10

Oh great, a warning about graphic scenes some viewers might find upsetting doesn’t bode well! 😳😳

Dulra · 05/06/2019 22:15

I don't think joe will do anything but deenah will kill the mother!!!

Patienceisvirtuous · 05/06/2019 22:38

Aw, a very sad story 😢 brilliantly acted.

Optimist1 · 05/06/2019 22:38

It wasn't clear to me whether Dinah killed her mother. I'm kind of hoping that she, like Joe, was able to control her entirely understable murderous intentions. That way they were both emerging from very dark places (The Virtues?). Poor old Craigy couldn't rise above his troubles.

Very powerful drama. I'll be mulling it over for a good while.

AnyFucker · 05/06/2019 22:51

In floods here. The acting was amongst the best I have ever seen.

colouringinpro · 05/06/2019 23:02

I'm on plus 1. Amazing acting and so powerful in depicting how this stuff screws people up on so many levels Sad
