GoT is actually disgusting, isn't it?

In what way can it be described as 'entertainment'?

I seriously, don't understand why people happily sit down to watch the carnage, the immolation, the screaming children.

What is wrong with people?

Also, just to add- why have you started this thread now when next weeks episode is the last one. The last ever episode of GOT, so why get worked up about something that’s ending anyway.

Icandothisallday · 14/05/2019 22:14

I didn't like what they did to Sansa with the Bolton marriage storyline. It wasn't in the books (a different character was married off to Ramsay) and I don't understand why the writers made that choice. That scene in the first series where she nearly gets raped wasn't in the book either. It's one of the elements of GoT that I have always felt a bit icky about.

Have you watched either series?

Sansa marrying Bolton and hee being tortured by him, was pivotal to Sansas story and character arch. As I said, the books and show are not exactly the same.

It's odd that sexual violence is ok to out on TV if it's in the books. But not ok, if it's not in the books? How does it been written down first make it ok?

Also the first almost rape was important too. The discussion about why the people hate sansa, that she has with the hound, explains alot about the society and attitudes of the people of kings Lansing. All important.

Yes they could have just had he beaten. But facts are that in real life, a few hundreds years ago she is more likely to have been beaten and raped. Rather than just beaten. It happens even now. A woman in her own, jumped by a angry mob of men is more likely to be raped than just beaten.

Why would a show pretend that doesnt happen?

. Go to any old castle in uk and you will find torture instruments. Chains and implements for pain and horrors we luckily will only now see on screens.

This stuff isn’t made up gratuitous violence. It’s a made up story but based on historical facts. People really were treated like this.

zippey · 14/05/2019 22:19

I’m late to the party, on the 2nd season and I like it. But I do like horror, gratuitous violence and sex stuff. There are some powerful and strong actors in it and the storylines are similar to the story’s of our own monarchy - wether it’s Henry the 8th or Lady Jane Grey.

The Bible would be the most gratuitous story of all, what with children drowning in Noah’s flood and Abraham almost killing his child.

CostanzaG · 14/05/2019 22:24

Relevance is highly subjective though tiny ... a PhD which studies an aspect of GoT could be very relevant to someone studying and researching media and popular culture.

Mine is in an education related subject so in no way related to GoT .... but apparently watching such things makes me either evil or of low intelligence which is of course how these things are measured 🙄

derxa · 14/05/2019 22:54

My DH and DSs watch GOT but to me it's a pile of goblin shite. It's not a problem. It's a fantasy drama not University Challenge.

BedraggledBlitz · 14/05/2019 23:36

I generally enjoy the series but I found the latest episode a bit much. But mostly cos it was clunky use of gore to lower opinion of a popular character. Seems a bit lazy.

Miljah · 14/05/2019 23:45

Yup. My position still stands. I would like every prolific poster who has cited - 'and the OP said!!!'- on this thread to scroll through all 400 responses and decide whether I actually said whatever you claim I did, or randomly picked up upon another poster who agrees with me.... or your righteous dudgeon has blinded you to what I, and other posters, have said.

Yes, I know it may require half an hour of your time, maybe time you'd deem better spent on Love Island repeats, or whatever.

But, if you accuse, be accurate.

I don't condemn people, I condemn choices.

If you think GoT is crackingly great entertainment, child rape and immolation therein doesn't count, having only been portrayed in early episodes.... I still condemn your choice of 'entertainment'.

I’ve read all the posts. Clearly you haven’t though, OP.

Pepperdino · 15/05/2019 00:29

The OP is a frightful bore who refuses to engage.

Cakemonger · 15/05/2019 00:31

Why are people so rude on this thread? It's a tv show!

OkPedro · 15/05/2019 00:43

Oh dear op One does seem to have a stick up one’s arse

Mothership4two · 15/05/2019 02:09

I think you are talking about the last episode. Several characters were shown to be horrified at what was happening (which is part of the ongoing plot), therefore they had to show what was happening from their POV. One of the main characters had gone too far and was killing the innocent population unnecessarily (again ongoing plot) and her weapon is a fire-breathing dragon, so people were shown being burned.

Although it is a fantasy, the author (George RR Martin) has vaguely based it in medieval times and used historical events in the plot. Although he has added magical extras. In the past in war men would hack each other with swords and axes, a pretty messy business, and innocent people would get killed or injured and women would be raped. TBH it doesnt bother me too much as I know none of it is real.

I dont judge what people want to watch. I have a good friend who likes to watch historical programmes about war or the military - I would find that more upsetting. Another good friend cannot comprehend how I can watch animal rescue programmes! I dont understand people wanting to watch true crime programmes, anything crime related with children in it (couldnt watch Broadchurch) or soaps where the characters seem to yell at each other, fight, have affairs and sometimes kill each other. But, ho hum, each to their own.

RiversDisguise · 15/05/2019 02:24

It's not for me as I hate fantasy as a genre, but happy for other to have their fun- why the fuck not?

I love Carry On films and Viz magazine and all sorts of shite. How does it affect anyone else? It doesn't.

Alicewond · 15/05/2019 02:40

Ok a have a script for a new tv show, no one dies and everyone lives happily ever after. It’s all about respect for ones neighbours and everyone being equal. Sound amazing doesn’t it, who wants to watch this? :P

Icandothisallday · 15/05/2019 05:30

OP what is your point?

Because from what I can see you dont have one, refuse to answer any posters.

And just post goady posts. It appears that you cant actually debate this.

RedRiverShore · 15/05/2019 05:45

OP is just a GF, it was deliberately posted at the time when people would be watching GoF so obviously it would get lots of replies.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/05/2019 06:56

I still condemn your choice of 'entertainment'.

I condemn your random use of italics. Oh, and your inability to actually develop an argument rather than simply reiterate your original point in the hope that that somehow makes you sound as if you are engaging in the cut and thrust of a fierce intellectual debate. It doesn't. You're more or less standing on the touchlines handing out the half-time oranges.

BertrandRussell · 15/05/2019 06:58

I don’t think you can justify gratuitous violence by referencing other gratuitous violence can you?

And the fact that torture chambers are popular is worrying surely? Castles that didn’t have them historically are importing torture implements from other sites to attract the punters.....

Icandothisallday · 15/05/2019 07:02

And the fact that torture chambers are popular is worrying surely? Castles that didn’t have them historically are importing torture implements from other sites to attract the punters.....

Why is it worrying? Is it more worrying than the fact we used to use them, on a regular basis?

That's the point. Aside from the dragons, this stuff happened all the time and the human race survived. If people doing it didnt cause the end of our society and morality. How would people being interested in it, or watching being faked cause so many problems?

BertrandRussell · 15/05/2019 07:08

“Why is it worrying? Is it more worrying than the fact we used to use them, on a regular basis? ”

Well no. But surely wanting to look at them is pretty horrible? To the extent that a historic building without them is less popular than one with?

Icandothisallday · 15/05/2019 07:12

Why is it horrible? Do you think people who watched the Ted Bundy film, now go out to rape and kill women?

As I said, morality survived these events happening. I cant see why it wont survive people being interested in it.

joggingon · 15/05/2019 07:19

War, rape, burning people (acid attacks) and political violence is all wrong and shouldn't be on our screens. Yup.

SoupDragon · 15/05/2019 07:20

There is a difference between showing those things as news items and using them for "fun".
