So, now we battle for King's Landing and the Throne.

The penultimate episode of this most epic of tales. Can Cersei survive? Will Euron catch on and wonder how Tyrion could have known of the pregnancy? Will Arya and the Hound beat Jaime in the race south?

As ever, no leaks or spoilers please until we watch the episode live together. Our Watch begins....

Do agree its rushed though. Something is missing this season. Can't put my finger on what it is

There is no depth.

Cottonwoolmouth · 14/05/2019 10:47

I honestly can’t see GW letting him anywhere near Danny. What can they possibly say to each other after this?

They may need an assassin to get to Danny that could impersonate some one close to her.. wonder who that could be 😁

MaddieElla · 14/05/2019 10:47

Watching it a second time, Dany said "you'll know when it's time" to GW. I think she planned all along to annihilate everyone, as she felt she'd been betrayed by everyone.

The bells rang, she got her angry face on and GW threw the spear. Planned by the two of them that if she decided to burn them all, he would help her.

MoominMantra · 14/05/2019 10:49

Really, Gray Worm was in on this?

agirlhasnonameX · 14/05/2019 10:53

.. wonder who that could be
Hmmm the last piece of the GoT puzzle 😂

Prequelle · 14/05/2019 10:53

Remember when we were all like ooo what a going on here, looking for foreshadowing and hidden signs? Now what we see is what we get. There's nothing underlying nothing more complex. Just a basic show and tell programme, nothing like the complexity we saw from the seasons written from GRRM books

MaddieElla · 14/05/2019 10:53

That's how I see it. Jon was completely in the dark, but GW threw the first spear.

He either saw her going batshit and went with her, or that was the plan all along. I'm inclined to believe he knew they wouldn't accept a surrender.

Llioed · 14/05/2019 10:58

I agree, it was planned all along. I don’t think it was an instant decision, as per what previous posters are saying. I’m watching episode 5 again now for the second time and it’s clearer to me now that D and GW planned to attack KL regardless of whether the bells were rung or not.

LaurieMarlow · 14/05/2019 11:01

Dany said "you'll know when it's time" to GW.

Ooh good spot, I’d forgotten that.

I think that makes it worse.

LaurieMarlow · 14/05/2019 11:01

Who rung the bells btw? Was it Jaime?

Prequelle · 14/05/2019 11:04

It would have taken multiple people to ring those bells in the way they did, they would have had special people who's job it was to do it when the cries of ring the bells came out.

I don't see how it means Dany knows she was betrayed, it's how kings landing shows they surrender. They chose to surrender because a big fuck off Dragon was chargrilling them

sashh · 14/05/2019 11:05

I don't think Dany and Jon can both survive the next episode.

Dany won't marry him because, although it would put her on the throne and theoretically they could both rule, she would be perceived as the consort rather than the ruler.

It has echoes of Mary I and Phllip of Spain, he became King of England and that was not a popular move.

Also Jon's claim is to the 7 kingdoms not anything on the other side of the narrow sea.

longtompot · 14/05/2019 11:09

I wonder if Ayra will kill GW, take his face and kill Danny? Its the only way she could get close enough to her, to appear to be someone trusted.

We enjoyed the episode, just a shame it all feels so rushed. Eg, in previous ones if Jamie was freed like that, you would have seen him trying to escape the camp. Last week when the ships were destroyed, you'd have seen a bit more of how they got to shore, and possibly Messindre getting taken hostage. The small things like that.

The Ayra scenes were amazing. Surviving all that! I don't think she will be on the iron throne at the end, but will do her damnedest to make sure the right one is.

I think Cerseis death was too impersonal. It should have been a public beheading or something similar. Ed always said to Jon to deal your own punishments (or something like that).

I guess Jamie, realising he may never see Cersei again, felt the need to see her again.

I wonder how far Varys got his message spread? It was sad he didn't make it till the end. I'm glad Tyrion has. So far. I wonder if he will now just disappear?

Llioed · 14/05/2019 11:10

When D said to GW “you’ll know when it’s time” I think most viewers will assume this meant when D & Drogon first blew the gates and killed the Golden Company men outside the first set of gates leading to KL.

I now believe she also meant “you’ll know when it’s time” for D and GW to attack AGAIN after the soldiers surrendered their swords/after the bells were rung.

It was planned. JS and Tyrion now know this. I’m enjoying watching this episode again.

NunoGoncalves · 14/05/2019 11:13

My guess is Arya will kill Dany, having seen the horror and destruction up close.

Jon will refuse the throne and go back up North where he belongs (Winterfell or to rebuild the wall, who knows) and Sansa will become queen of the seven kingdoms.

I REALLY hope Bran has some part to play in the final episode. I really hope his loooong warging in the battle of winterfell had some sort of meaning, but I doubt it now.

Agreed that this whole thing has rushed. They could have developed Dany's madness over a whole season or so, then it would have felt more believable. As it is, the episode was certainly well done and I enjoyed it, but I didn't really buy Dany suddenly torching hundreds of thousands of women and children. Even with her being pissed off and grieving etc. that was way out of character.

It's sad that the show descended so quickly from clever, surprising political thriller into standard predictable hollywood fare once they caught up with the books. I used to list it as one of my favourite TV shows of all time, now it's been relegated to one of those "could have been amazing if the writers hadn't totally fucked it up halfway through" alongside Lost.

Prequelle · 14/05/2019 11:13

Anyone catch Varys and his little birds convo, looks like they were attempting to poison Dany. Kid works in the kitchens, tells Varys she isn't eating, scared of guards watching her... bigger the risk greater the reward...

Lweji · 14/05/2019 11:18

Good point. I noticed the conversation but didn't think of poisoning. Doh!

LaurieMarlow · 14/05/2019 11:19

Another good catch. I didn’t get the implications of this.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 14/05/2019 11:23

Prequelle absolutely. "We'll try again tomorrow". What could he have meant other than try poisoning her again tomorrow.

GhostIsAGoodBoi · 14/05/2019 11:30

Jamie told Brienne when he was delirious after the hand chop about the Wildfire and said something along the lines of it was better to kill one man than allow him to kill thousands.

@Laurie good point. I expected the wildfire to be more dramatic but I imagine the dragon fire out out did it. Was kinda hoping one would explode and blast Dany and the dragon.

Love Davos.

Tywin is always Grandad Lannister to me because most of the time I can’t remember his name Grin He’ll be turning in his grave at all the Lannister’s being killed.

But a lot of big Houses have no people left now.

Prequelle · 14/05/2019 11:30

Imagine if they had been successful 😂😂 what a shock that would have been.

MoominMantra · 14/05/2019 11:35

I don't think Dany's descent into tyranny is out of character- it's been hinted at for some time. Even in season 1 she can coldly look at her brother being killed and only note that he wasn't worthy of the throne. Yes he was an arsehole. But she is definitely an iron fist in a velvet glove.

Her earliest life lessons are harsh and I think that shapes her emerging character. This constant 'bend the knee' thing has also been going on for some time.

AngeloMysterioso · 14/05/2019 11:40

I immediately thought he was trying to poison her when he said “we’ll try again at supper.”. Wasn’t there a line many seasons ago about poison being the weapon of women and eunuchs?

I don’t think D & GW planned to attack all along. When the bells rang you could see that they were all waiting to see what she would do, it wasn’t until after she started firebombing that GW picked up the spear and started killing, so he was just following her lead.

Xyzzzzz · 14/05/2019 11:49

I wouldn’t be surprised if she makes Jon her kingsgaurd, in a bid to stop him from procreating and keeping power, as I don’t see their relationship going anywhere. Then he kills her and becomes the Queen slayer. He’ll then exile himself to the north. Setting up history again.

bigKiteFlying · 14/05/2019 11:49

Dany's descent seems quick not unbelievable.

She’s had similar moments but been talked down or made to almost regret them but the people who did that are gone or she no longer trusts now.

The whole arc of Mad king loads of deaths and wars to end up with a Mad Queen - many RL revolutions have done that - so a beliveable arc there as well.

I do wonder if Varys had any play left - did his letters get out did his kichen maid stop trying did any last conversations have an impact on other characters. I wonder if Sansa is done as well or has she got a plan.
