A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Thread 4 (previous threads linked from OP of this one)

Some suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired:

Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Black (Netflix)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Viki/Drama bus)*
Goblin (Viki)
Healer (Netflix)*
He is Psychometric (Viki)
Her Private Life (Viki)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Just Between Lovers (Viki)*
Last Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)
Live (Netflix)
Love from a Star (netflix)*
My Strange Hero (Viki)
Pinocchio (Netflix)
Pride & Prejudice (Netflix)*
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Romance is the Bonus Book (Netflix)*
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)*
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)
Suspicious Partner (netflix)*
W (Viki & Netflix)*
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)*
While You Were Sleeping (viki)*
You are my Destiny (Netflix)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis try this helpful guide to Korean terms of address and honorifics.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

I know BTS are currently flavour of the month but this YouTube video of Superjunior answering ‘would you rather?’ questions for BuzzFeed made me laugh, partly because the questions are so mad.

That’s funny! I rather like Superjunior.

Betty - I was telling a friend about the free Kdrama content on Dramafast last night. You are further along than me with The Guest - would you recommend it? My friend will not see HH KJW as a compelling selling point, so I am interested in the dramatic content.

If you like exorcist/horror/creepy stuff then yes. It’s a good intro into the darker side of kdrama.

I’ve been catching up with Abyss this morning simply cos I had it downloaded on phone, but it’s a skippitydoodah-er I’m afraid

bettys · 22/05/2019 08:42

The Guest actually reminds me of The Wailing, a v good Korean horror film. HH KJW isn’t playing for hawtness, it’s just an unavoidable by-product 😆 I actually really rate all 3 characters, and also the contract in scenery between Seoul & the villages.

bettys · 22/05/2019 11:25

contrast not contract

It'd be a good one to start on if you're not into rom-coms and are coming over from scandi-noir

boatyardblues · 22/05/2019 13:54

Good advice about Scandi Noir as he’s also a fan of that.

Anyone else just happier today because another episode of HPL drops tonight?

I am also excited about One Spring Night because Something in the Rain was the start of the rabbit hole for me. I just loved the low key focus on ordinary life and love. As the same team and ML are involved, I am expecting good things.

OP posts:
bettys · 22/05/2019 15:34

Yes me I can’t wait!!!

I found SITR a bit bland, and the FL a bit annoying as she mostly gave in to men all& her mother all the time.

bettys · 22/05/2019 16:10

But i do like Jung Have In so I will be watching!

boatyardblues · 22/05/2019 17:13

It’s up! 1%....

OP posts:
bettys · 22/05/2019 18:12

Lovely subbers it's already 17% Grin

boatyardblues · 22/05/2019 18:31

19% now. I agree - they’re fab.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 22/05/2019 19:08

54% already. They’re on fire again this week. I hope Viki doesn’t crash tonight.

😱it better bloody not I’ve been very good & only watched the first 15 mins without subs 😇

Bea · 22/05/2019 19:39

Touch your heart is turning out to be a pleasant surprise.... It's very touching and I really love the characters! 👍😍

I'm not as eager as you two for HPL... quite happy to sit and wait! 😂 I'll watch when both eps up and ready! I've not yet done a BETTYS and watched without subs! 😂 😂 😂

There's a lot to watch at the moment! Will this never end! Are we going to watch kdramas FOREVER.??? 😱😳😍😂😁

bettys · 22/05/2019 19:48

Hahahahaha!!! Quite possibly Bea! 🤣🤣
Yes Touch Your Heart is sweet 😊

boatyardblues · 22/05/2019 20:08

I’m watching One Spring Night, trmporarily paused to help DS2 with homework. It’s very slow paced, a lot of mundane but the characters are slowly taking shape. I think it’ll be a grower, but it is super, super low key. I reckon a lot of casual viewers will have clicked away by now. There’s a marriage-obsessed pushy Dad in this one, rather than a pushy Mum.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 22/05/2019 20:34

Just finished ep 1 now. It’s good. Took a while to get going but it was worth sticking with. The conversation over coffee in the pharmacy was so well done, very careful but great. Jung Hae-In is going to be great in this - he has a very sympathetic character.

OP posts:
bettys · 22/05/2019 21:17

Oh didn't realise it was starting today!

So have you seen HPL yet?? Aaawweee dying to comment!!

boatyardblues · 22/05/2019 21:48

Just finished Betty. I thought it started a bit slowly this week and I felt curiously unmoved, but it definitely shifted up a gear towards the end. I loved that Cindy was sitting polishing rocks with PMY’s Dad.

OP posts:
bettys · 22/05/2019 22:02

Oh that's what I was going to say! I love that she just moved in & was doing the happy eating wriggle and polishing rocks. And the bit when her mum moved down the stairs like something out of The Ring.

It did start slowly, but thought KJW was soppy adorable.

boatyardblues · 22/05/2019 22:14

They’re cute ‘n’ all and she is being very supportive, but I’d like to get back to steamy Lion please before we run out of episodes. We’ve seen that he has range, but now we need mooooooore heat.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 22/05/2019 22:16

Let’s put it this way, part way through one of their cosy scenes I was trying to remember which episode had the bathroom scene where he untangled her hair so I could revisit it. There was so much early promise.

OP posts:
bettys · 22/05/2019 22:27

Well I’m not going to argue with that!! I actually rewatched the woodwork shop scene while waiting for the subs to load.
