Thanks for that clip NotMyPuppy, very interesting indeed....

Won't it be a disappointment if we discover that as he died, Cottan was trying to say H H Help me?

Forthepurposesofthetape · 28/04/2019 09:04

Definitely think that Lisa is a uco for Ted and his last instruction to her when he was typing in front of the AC-12 team was a covert instruction to kill Corbett. I don't think he is H but has been posing as H sending apparent instructions to Lisa. He wants Corbett dead because they are connected in some way to Ireland.

Forthepurposesofthetape · 28/04/2019 09:06

BreakfastatSqiffanys he had to blink when she got to the initial letter but you try not blinking for longer than 8 seconds! It could have been Z but he couldn't hold off blinking for that long! 😂

tinstar · 28/04/2019 09:14

I guess that's why she asked him to blink twice at the right letter.

SinkGirl · 28/04/2019 12:56

Has anyone actually rewatched any of S5 yet?

I’m just starting and I must say the opening heist makes bugger all sense once you’re told that all the cops were in on it - they should have had at least one cop who wasn’t to make all that play acting worthwhile. The shock on her face at seeing the doll - clearly just for the audiences’s benefit, which I’m finding irrationally annoying.

As you were 😂

NoisyBrain · 28/04/2019 13:24

Sink good point!
I daren't watch Ep1 again then, as I am arse-clenchingly pedantic at the best of times Grin

BitOfFun · 28/04/2019 13:27

I thought that myself, Sink.

SinkGirl · 28/04/2019 13:38

It does make me rethink my thoughts on other scenes that apparently rule things out (eg Kate and Dot when she’s trying to get him to confess) - she could just be playing along for the audience’s sake, which is annoying)

Also, they have never explained why Kate was promoted over Steve have they? My assumption is his injury / rehab being a factor, but it’s never explained.

And as we’ve pointed out, no explanation of Kate bring back with her DH, and very little Kate at all.

Hmm.

S3 was very focussed on Steve’s breaking of protocol by forming a sexual relationship with Denton. And this season we’ve seen John all over women despite loving his wife, as part of his UCO role.

Was Kate’s relationship with Aker’s husband an undercover thing maybe? It’s never felt right to me. Was the separation fake maybe?

pepperpot99 · 28/04/2019 14:19

I have watched all episode of series 5 so far (gosh I'm a real saddo Shock) and I disagree that the heist in part 1 was unrealistic. Obviously the team knew there would be some kind of interception but not what kind. They weren't expecting guns either, or to be murdered - or they wouldn't have taken the bribe - so their shock is genuine. I still can't work out why Lisa allowed Cafferty to survive though.....

In last week's episode the last act John commits is to shoot his gun (or the one he took from Miroslav) as he lies dying and I'm trying to work out why he does that. Will it leave some kind of ballistics trail perhaps?

pepperpot99 · 28/04/2019 14:19

Sorry I meant to say I have re-watched.

Pengrin · 28/04/2019 14:37

they have never explained why Kate was promoted over Steve have they?

It ended with her winning an award and then it has been mentioned in this series about Ted taking steps to address the lack of females in leading roles.

Plus Steve is always fucking up.

Pengrin · 28/04/2019 14:37

And she’d already passed her inspector exams.

AtiaoftheJulii · 28/04/2019 14:42

Yes, I rewatched S5E1 and thought similar about Cafferty looking surprised etc.

Also, they have never explained why Kate was promoted over Steve have they? My assumption is his injury / rehab being a factor, but it’s never explained.

DD2 and I have rewatched from the beginning in the last few weeks. I assumed that in S4 there would be an explanation of Kate getting DI, but there's not, no. She ends S3 still as a DC, starts S4 as a DS, immediately passes her Inspector exam and lets Ted know she's interested. Later Ted tells her she's not experienced enough and that he's going to give Steve the DI post.

I guess partly the injury/rehab, but I was also wondering if there was being pressure applied to Ted after Roz Huntley's accusations of his sexism. Might fit with CraicMummy's GirlPower theory!

AtiaoftheJulii · 28/04/2019 14:44

Kate gets the award at the end of S3 doesn't she? For going after Dot?

Pengrin · 28/04/2019 14:47

Oh yes that’s right, it was S3. That is odd then, maybe we’ll find out this series.

Hels20 · 28/04/2019 14:54

I have spent the last 10 days re-watching series 1 to 3 and I just can’t see how Ted is H. There are so many times, he could have diverted the investigation - away from fairbanks, away from Dot. He was also furious with Gill for trying to do anything other than the “right thing”. Also - when Dot is in the car with denton before he murders her, he tells her “last time it was £50k, this time it could be £100k...”- if Ted is so broke (and I think he is), then he wouldn’t be in such dire financial straits. Surely. Also - ted is just always so moral - in the earlier episodes is always raising his eyebrows at Steve’s shagging antics and just doesn’t want to admit that he and his wife have separated - I don’t think it is as much a pride thing as much as him thinking he has somehow failed his vows.

So if Jed goes down the route of H being Hastings - I think he has changed Ted’s character for it to fit.

LizzieMacQueen · 28/04/2019 15:09

I agree @Hels20 If Ted was orchestrating it all he'd be more than a little bit minted, unless the poverty is part of the cover up.

LadyKylieShagworthy · 28/04/2019 15:30

If they left the gun on show deliberately to tempt John, you would have thought they remove the bullets surely ?

SinkGirl · 28/04/2019 15:36

I have watched all episode of series 5 so far (gosh I'm a real saddo shock) and I disagree that the heist in part 1 was unrealistic. Obviously the team knew there would be some kind of interception but not what kind. They weren't expecting guns either, or to be murdered - or they wouldn't have taken the bribe - so their shock is genuine. I still can't work out why Lisa allowed Cafferty to survive though.....

But the shock was way before the guns. I get that they had to be believable on the radio - but no knowing looking between themselves? Nothing? Cafferty gets into the back of the car and sees a doll and looks absolutely shocked, even though she must know it’s the diversion?

It just doesn’t make sense to me. I know it’s difficult to film scenes like this while concealing major info from the audience but it can be done - I just found it unbelievable in hindsight.

The last thing we hear about the promotion to DI is in S4, very shortly before Steve’s accident. Ted chooses Steve over Kate. Obviously at some point his mind is changed - I just think if it’s not relevant to the bigger picture they may have mentioned why this is already?

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 28/04/2019 15:37

Oh God I kind of don't want to watch tonight. But then I also wish it was 9pm already...

GeorgeTheBleeder · 28/04/2019 15:44

Someone asked why Cafferty was spared. Possibly strategic thinking - she would be even more vulnerable to blackmail afterwards. As she was.

And although all the police in the opening heist had been bkackmailed we only heard that from Cafferty. Perhaps none of the others knew about each other?

pepperpot99 · 28/04/2019 16:00

I am desperate for a Really Really LONG interview in tonight's ep!!!

JackieLavertyIsInMyFreezer · 28/04/2019 16:19

I dont know who H is, but I still feel like the most likely scenario is that Ted is being set up, whether as H or just as being bent generally, and that may not be resolved till next series. He could well finish this series in prison. Gill and the ex-fed rep are definitely setting him up for something.ay e blackmailing him into retiring with the cash. I've still no idea who the overall 'big bad' is.

longwayoff · 28/04/2019 16:36

As a small diversion prior to the last extra long final episode, Adrian Dunbar is being interviewed next Sunday morning on the Andrew Marr show. BBC1.
