10 minutes to go!

OP posts:

The northern king by election is more Anglo Saxon in feel and doesn't seem to tally with the rest of westerns which has gone down the inheritance route.

I actually agree with this - as with the "Wars of the Roses" comparison (demonstrably a source of inspiration for GRRM). From an in-universe POV it all makes sense. See e.g. Sam's automatic assumption that Jon would now be heir. This makes complete sense in that a) Sam would, based on his own background, assume that legitimacy is based on inheritance and b) would, in a fight among several factions, have to declare some sort of preference. Having the #1 man of a faction be your BFF is certainly as good a reason as any.

What I don't get is: how come modern audiences seem to presume the inherent legitimacy of the Targs more often than not? Not only over other forms of government but also over other ruling houses whose own claim to rule essentially doesn't differ from that of the Targaryan line?

JasperRising · 16/04/2019 11:37

Maybe it is a matter of presentation? "Robert's Rebellion" automatically makes it sound like an overthrow of legtimacy which should therefore be corrected? And the Targs were the original conquerors weren't they? It is a bit weird though when we know they were shocking rulers towards the end.

(I also find it weird that the line has kept going since the conquest. Compared with actual dynasties it is quite improbable! I can't remember how long William the Conqueror line lasted but it wasn't as long as the Targs...)

Now I wait and see which typos my phone has made this time... It does not like GoT!

TheQueef · 16/04/2019 11:39

Bran told Sam he was waiting for 'an old friend ' and then Jaime toddles up Grin

TakenForSlanted · 16/04/2019 11:40

I, for one, am a fan of your phone and an avid supporter of the claim of King Eddard Bathroom, first of his name, king of the Andals and the First Men, Clogger of Loos and Soaker in Tubs. Long may he rule! Grin

Lweji · 16/04/2019 11:45

Not to mention they're in westerns. Wink

JasperRising · 16/04/2019 11:51

Blush I didn't even spot westeros/westerns at first...

Lweji · 16/04/2019 11:53

I had missed the bathroom. Grin

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 16/04/2019 12:03

Didn't Cersei refuse a glass of wine in S7 due to her "pregnancy"?

ElenadeClermont · 16/04/2019 12:40

I do not think Jon's Targaryen heritage will be revealed. What purpose would it serve? The Northeners would be horrified and Jon really does not care one bit about the South.

As (book) Tyrion is obsessed with dragons, he will work Jon's heritage out and tell Dany. Or Varys - who is another Targ candidate.

I think people think the Targaryens have a right to rule because they like (show) Dany.

Mner2019 · 16/04/2019 12:52

If we are basing it on a War of the Roses-type era, the wine wouldn't have been anywhere near as strong as the wine we drink today and it would have been a lot safer to drink than water.

EraOfTheGrey · 16/04/2019 14:07

MrsPles - Didn't Cersei refuse a glass of wine in S7 due to her "pregnancy"?
That was how she informed Jaimie that she was pregnant. He knew instinctively that she was pregnant when she refused wine.

Tunnockswafer · 16/04/2019 14:19

So if she isn’t pg, but gets pg by the Scandinavian guy, then Jaime will still think it’s his baby and will look out for her because of it?

EraOfTheGrey · 16/04/2019 14:37

I think Cersei believes that Jaimie has become more independent since their children have died. Jaimie has protected her and their children and forgiven everything bad she has done, because they have a common goal. Cersei has no further power over him so needs another child.

Whether she is pregnant in the first place she wants Jaimie to believe she is.

Lweji · 16/04/2019 14:49

What's the time frame, though? Surely she wouldn't be pregnant for 10 months? Unless she hid the birth of the baby.

EraOfTheGrey · 16/04/2019 15:31

Is it 10 months between the meeting at the Dragon pit and Jaimie arriving in Winterfell? If so, then I agree my theory is in the toilet.

CalmDownPacino · 16/04/2019 15:50

What's the time frame, though?

Good point....have we been given a time frame? Do we know how long it takes to ride to Winterfell, roughly? She isn't even 'showing' (assuming the pregnancy is real of course!).

TakenForSlanted · 16/04/2019 15:57

Nobody really knows. Might be best approximated by how long it took Jamie to get from King's Landing to Winterfell. Except the show is notoriously inconsistent with travel times.

EraOfTheGrey · 16/04/2019 16:03

Well, King's Landing to Winterfell is said to be 2,000 miles. In season 1 ep 1, didn't Robert say that it took them 6 months to travel up to Winterfell?
I can't make sense of it.

JasperRising · 16/04/2019 16:09

EraOfTheGrey it doesn't make sense because in the series that lined up with books they were consistent and realistic with distances. Since season 7 they have enabled FastTravel and apparently can just turn up whether they need to be CF: Gendry's heroic run back to the wall to send a raven to Dragonstone to get Dany to fly north all before more than one of the eight hunter died... It no longer makes any sense.

PCohle · 16/04/2019 16:20

Yeah, I agree that in the more recent seasons they've totally given up on realistic travel times.

That said, I imagine it would always be much quicker for one man to travel alone like Jamie than it would be for he king's massive procession to make its way though the country.

I don't think the time scale is meant to be months and months though. The WW are coming too fast for that to make sense.

Theimpossiblegirl · 16/04/2019 16:24

I think I'm going to have to watch it again before episode 2 in light of all that I've just read.
Shock

fancynancyclancy · 16/04/2019 16:24

6 episodes just doesn’t seem enough. I hated the speed of season 7 & felt that one of GOTs strengths was the slowness as it allowed for the characters to develop etc. I know the problems with the kids becoming adults but again think that is actually a strength as everyone has physically get older, matured or withered, they have the life experience.

Where did Dany get the eggs from? I know it was a trader but where did they come from. Could there be more?

I think there's more to the look that Drogon gives John than "stop groping my mum" I agree.

I dont really understand Cersei’s motivation. If the whites destroy all the other armies & she kills her brothers who does she want to rule over? Also does she think she can negotiate with the NK?

fancynancyclancy · 16/04/2019 16:27

Doesn’t Jon still count as half Stark due to his mum or does dads name wipe it out.

JasperRising · 16/04/2019 16:42

Jon is still half a Stark but westerosi society seems to be on the women marry into their husbands family basis. In terms of inheritance, I interpret westeros as having a system that would now bump him below Ned's daughters, so he would only inherit Winterfell etc after Sansa, her descendants, Arya, her descendants. Of course for Jon, like Theon, it is complicated by the fact he was brought up as part of a family other than his dad's. So is his loyalty to his family in terms of upbringing or blood. The season 7 chat where Jon said Theon was a Greyjoy and a Stark is quite foreshadowing of his own position.

JasperRising · 16/04/2019 16:44

I am also unsure of Cersei's game plan. If she is expecting the Night King to win then she is just going to be facing an even bigger army of the dead as it will include dead northerners too. Unless she is gambling on Jon and Dany winning but at such a great cost of life that they can't then oppose her. It's a big gamble though!
