New drama about a grieving mum who confronts the man accused online for being her sons killer

But is he really a notorious child murderer or a tragic victim of mistaken identity?

In law, there is the accused and the victim. In life, it’s not that simple...

I think this will be quite heart wrenching

Ha ha @Macaroonmayhem I too used to work in the area, just further down a bit and kept thinking 'well they wouldn't have got there that fast' and thinking going down Victoria st was a weird way for her to travel to the court etc 😆

I also got excited watching the last avengers film though when there were glimpses of the city. I need a life!

TheRealKimmySchmidt63 · 12/04/2019 01:27

Gripping amazing drama fantastic acting from Craig

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 12/04/2019 01:42

Wow....just caught up on the final episode. That was just brilliant. ...absolutely brilliant

Piggywaspushed · 12/04/2019 08:02

Well, let alone how quickly the (drug addled) attacker got from Edinburgh to Port Glasgow!! In fact there seemed to be no issues for any of the shuttling between the two!

Oblomov19 · 12/04/2019 08:04

Watched all 4 episodes last night in a mahoosive stretch. Loved it. Thought it was brilliant. Didn't see twist coming.

Bookworm4 · 12/04/2019 09:07

@piggy
That annoyed me, Edinburgh to Port Glasgow is 70 miles but you'd think they were next door in this, even my 13 yr old was saying that's ridiculous 🙄

Clawdy · 12/04/2019 09:44

Really liked the fact that John Hannah 's character was flawed and not particularly likeable, it made a change from the usual troubled nice guy cop in so many dramas. But would have liked to see a bit more of him in the episode, he seemed to be written out rather quickly.

NancyPickford · 12/04/2019 10:03

For me the tears started when she was interrogating EJT about everything her son said at the attack, and he didn't want to tell her one thing and she forced him, and he said : 'He called out for you." Kelly MacDonald's reaction was so visceral, so real, she totally conveyed how a mother would feel to hear that. I thought she played an absolute blinder in that whole scene. From the wee schoolgirl in Trainspotting to this, she's matured into a fine actress.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 12/04/2019 10:54

Glad I wasn't the only one who gasped at the twist. Really didn't expect that!

I'd only half paid attention to the episodes 2 and 3, ended up cooking whilst they were on, definitely missed bits and wasn't overly impressed by it. The last half hour was fantastic, and definitely made up for it, even if DP did try to talk his way through it.

Was I the only one to feel uncomfortable, though? I mean, I felt so sorry for the killer and in a way it wasn't his fault (I mean, it was, obviously, but he'd desperately tried to stop it from happening), but at the same time he was a child killer, in both senses of the phrase. It made me start thinking about real-life equivalents and it was very unsettling.

Actually, can someone fill me in a bit (as I say, DP was talking): am I right in thinking he'd ended up under the bridge to avoid being at home, and that his childhood hadn't been great up until then?

tinstar · 12/04/2019 11:12

It made me start thinking about real-life equivalents and it was very unsettling.

Totally agree. It was hard not to feel sympathy for the killer and feel it wasn't totally his fault. If parents neglect their children, let them lead chaotic lives and don't seek help for them then they're as much responsible as their child if that child goes on to kill. There ought to be some mechanism for parents sharing the blame in such circumstances. (But I know that those parents probably also led chaotic, disturbed lives themselves)

ReturnofSaturn · 12/04/2019 11:17

I must have watched a different episode last night to you lot as I thought the ending was boring and rubbish.
What was the twist everyone's on about? Craig was Eddie right? So what was the twist?

Piggywaspushed · 12/04/2019 11:24

I think the twist was that he was Eddie, and many thought we were by that point sure he wasn't. I saw it coming, though, must admit. It was the 'cleverest' and least sensationalist ending, I suppose.

I thought it was a bit dull, too, so I'm with you ( I fell asleep and then had to pretend to DH that I had heard all the final stuff) . But a lot of that was me getting distracted and annoyed by a programme made in Scotland with mainly Scottish cast and crew having such gaping geographical and accent based improbabilities, as if they think Scottish audiences will suck it up, because the English audiences are more important and won't know.

tinstar · 12/04/2019 12:44

What was the twist everyone's on about? Craig was Eddie right? So what was the twist?

That he was convincing in his claims not to be Eddie; that the mum realised her info was flawed; that it looked like either the daughter's boyfriend or Craig's friend might be Eddie; that he agreed to go to mediation with the mum (he clearly wasn't an innately bad or evil man and was suffering from the knowledge of what he had done, so how could he face her?); that you would think it unlikely he would want to live in the area where he committed his crime ......

Piggywaspushed · 12/04/2019 12:48

He didn't tin! He lived in Port Glasgow!

tinstar · 12/04/2019 13:52

Ah! Scrap that last bit then!

Clawdy · 12/04/2019 13:53

Can anyone tell me the Rumi quote used at the end?

chesterfuckingdraws · 12/04/2019 14:07

@Clawdy here it is

THE VICTIM BBC MON 9pm
Clawdy · 12/04/2019 14:46

Oh thank you chester , I will be googling Rumi now! Smile

ReturnofSaturn · 12/04/2019 16:09

Oh I don't think any of those were 'twists'. Personally I kept waiting for a twist but it didn't come hence why I thought it was boring 🤣

JustDanceAddict · 12/04/2019 17:02

I didn’t cry and I cry at everything usually.

Clawdy · 12/04/2019 17:10

Actually I'm a bit sick of the endless twists in tv dramas now, most of them are so improbable. It made a change to see a more realistic ending, with really interesting characters for once.

Awrite · 12/04/2019 17:33

The scenes between Anna and Craig were totally gripping/emotional. Terrific acting from both of them.

I guess Eddie killed Liam because he had the one thing that he wanted - a Mum who loved him. I didn't feel sorry for Craig/Eddie till that very last scene. I suppose he'd stopped lying to himself.

Excellent programme, very nuanced.

popcorndiva · 12/04/2019 17:41

Just been thinking but Eddie said 'I didn't torture him like they say I did. Does anyone think the daughter's boyfriend did something to the body once Eddie had left.

Invisibleiink · 12/04/2019 18:02

I did wonder that popcorn, but I think Craig/Eddie explained that the marks were there because he had to move Liam's body and cover it up with bricks, cans etc, to hide him. I think the explanation about Danny was just that he was so traumatised about what he had found.

It hadn't occurred to me about Liam's mother awrite, but that does make a sort of sense.

Justmuddlingalong · 12/04/2019 18:37

DP didn't see the final one last night so asked me who EJT was. I've just blubbed my way through telling him what happened. 😭
