here we are

I'm a bit worried HP is going to turn up to the wedding extremely drunk and regretful of breaking his vow of celibacy and blame FB for it, though I hope not.

RuffleCrow · 04/04/2019 21:08

I'm same-sex attracted myself, Rage and nobody is saying a gay person can't plau straight. Not sure where you're getting that from. Hmm

I guess if you're looking to take offence you'll find it.

On that same subject, rewatching series 1 - Fleabag was definitely in love with Boo. It's actually quite overt on second viewing.

BagpussAteMyHomework · 04/04/2019 21:17

HP is officiating at the wedding. He changed his mind about not doing it.

spugzbunny · 04/04/2019 21:18

Right I've gone back for a third (or sixth maybe) viewing and I'm fairly certain that is Andrew scott in the nuddy at the end.

I do think people are reading a lot more in to it than is there. One of the things I like about it is it's closeness to reality. Life doesn't tidy neatly in to boxes, all tied up. Sometimes people are simply selfish arseholes because they can't deal with their own lives. Both Boo and FB actually bring to mind a classic borderline personality disorder.

RuffleCrow · 04/04/2019 21:29

spugzbunny i'd have to disagree with you there - I think it's deliberately meant to be multi-faceted and cerebral. It's made to be mulled over. These very brief tv series often are.

spugzbunny · 04/04/2019 21:35

@RuffleCrow oh absolutely but I think things like the priest being the peado brother or FB and the bank manager getting together are looking for story lines that just aren't there.

RuffleCrow · 04/04/2019 22:18

Fair point.

RosemaryTelephoneOperator · 04/04/2019 22:30

Chopping dicks off is a bit of a theme too. The sexhibition, the priest who wanted to be a saint, Martin saying she would chop a dick off.

Wetdogloveshubert · 04/04/2019 22:31

I wasn't looking for stories that aren't there, simply following an earlier discussion point with a worry - and not a serious one. Digging over each other's theories is a little mean.

StellaRockafella · 04/04/2019 22:40

De-lurking to say to those asking why the dad just seems to go along with things - he's weak-willed and doesn't want to be on his own, hence him ignoring just how dreadful Evil Stepmum to be/Olivia Coleman is. He also can't deal with his own emotions so its easier for him to let her tell him what to do in a bid to quiet his own grief and his daughters'.

It's also all too real for me having experienced similar when my mother died when I was 19, and someone on the periphery of their circle moved in on my dad at the funeral. She was dreadful too.

Anyway! Wasn't massively wowed with the first series but this one is brilliant. HP is just the icing on the cake. Their chemistry is ridiculous. Really hope Claire and Klare run off together into the Finnish sunset.

Have we worked out where it's set/where they all live? I'm pretty certain the dad's house is in Dartmouth Park NW5. Still trying to figure out where the cafe is too. (Perils of being a Londoner is that I have tolocate everything!)

ThanksItHasPockets · 04/04/2019 22:52

Caitlin Moran tweeted a photo today from outside the cafe. It’s the Village Cafe on York Rise. You’re right that it’s mostly set around Dartmouth Park. Claire’s house (seen in series 1) is on Laurier Road.

Cakemonger · 04/04/2019 22:57

I've decided I can cope with any ending except Claire staying with her husband. I'm more invested in her than FB!

I don't like HP, I think he's abusive and messed up. I wondered what the significance was of FB imagining Boo telling her not to tell HP about her in the confession booth. Like there was a good reason for FB to protect herself from him?

Fantastic show. Not sure I've ever thought so much about a tv series inbetween episodes.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 04/04/2019 23:05

Not looking to take offence thanks ruffle but it was definitely you who said earlier in this thread:

That may have just been a personal boundary thing for AS as he's gay in rl?

which implies AS's real life sexual preference would affect his acting choices. More than one poster questioned that.
It is stereotyping. The same as you being surprised Russell Tovey was gay. Again, stereotyping. So Hmm right back atcha.

RosemaryTelephoneOperator · 04/04/2019 23:51

Ive given up trying to guess and will keep my faith in PWB to provide a beautiful, perfectly constructed and poetic end.

Here's to peace and those who get in the way of it. GinGin

HelicopteringBastard · 04/04/2019 23:58

Shut the fuck up friday sounds lovely Grin

PerspicaciaTick · 05/04/2019 00:19

Dad lets Godmother do all the emotional heavy-lifting for him. He can smile and nod while she emotes, empathises, compliments, makes conversation and generally does the equivalent of performance parenting. We know she is unpleasant and duplicitous, but she does make it very easy for him to trail along unnoticed in her wake.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 05/04/2019 00:23

I'm late to this thread, but constantly confused as I keep reading HP as Harry Potter.
I do wish more of the characters had proper names.

I love the fact that Priest is the only person who "sees" FB's asides to camera.

RuffleCrow · 05/04/2019 06:41

Odd policing of other people's thoughts going on rage. You seem to be very strict about who can think what about gay people, even if the people having those thoughts are LGB themselves.

I have explained the nuances in my question but you are determined to paint me as homophobic. God knows why you've set out to misconstrue my words in that way but the fact is you've got it wrong.

Nobody has said anything remotely offensive and it's not rude to think other people may have boundaries and enforce those boundaries in a professional context. Plenty of actors do, for a variety of reasons and it doesn't diminish their acting in any way. Any of us could be right or wrong here. Nobody has the God's Eye View. Maybe it's him in that scene, maybe it isn't.

HoraceCope · 05/04/2019 06:52

I am sure I read that AS didnt want all his roles to be gay roles.

OP posts:
Ragnarthe · 05/04/2019 06:53

When did Boo tell her not to tell the divine HP about her? I must have missed that.
I hope you are all impressed that I convinced my v straightlaced 75 year old mother to watch it. She calls me to discuss every week!

KneelJustKneel · 05/04/2019 07:00

I have a dad /step mum to be situation that altho ugh v different circumstances.... feels so so similar!!

Connieston · 05/04/2019 07:13

Re.the Boo query above in episode 4 when HP is quizzing her whilst holding Hilary we see Boo across the cafe shaking her head at Fleabag, like a warning. It's sinister almost.

RuffleCrow · 05/04/2019 07:14

That is impressive. My late, very straightlaced catholic grandmother use to love Father Ted! Not quite as impressive but still Grin

RuffleCrow · 05/04/2019 07:15

connieston we have to wonder whether the 'ghost of Boo' inside Fleabag's head would still have her best interests at heart - given what happened. It's all getting very metaphysical
