Also loving this. I’ve watched this season back from the beginning because I am suddenly obsessed.
I noticed something interesting in the first episode during the family dinner party that I’d not especially picked up before. Throughout the whole dinner, the Evil Godmother is dominating the interactions. The father is stammering and easily cowed, Martin and Claire are playing happy couples, and Fleabag is clearly “outside” the family dynamics (though the priest keeps trying to draw her in).
At one point Martin asks Hot Priest if it’s usual to join in with family dinners with couples he’s going to marry. He tells them it’s not, but he’s new to the parish and “really fucking lonely.”
Shortly after he mentions that his deceased predecessor was a really great, dedicated priest. (There’s a suggestion here that Fleabag’s question - “Are you a real priest? - is still resonating in him.) He is clearly a bit moved by the idea of the other priest’s dedication. Fleabag is looking at him really searchingly as he says this. Their chemistry has been noticeably building up to this point, and they are asking each other questions and starting to hold each other’s eye a bit as they speak - technically speaking to the whole group, but increasing focussing in each other.
The interesting bit is that Evil Godmother clearly notices their growing rapport right at this point. Coleman conveys this exquisitely, with just her eyes and a slight tightening of her expression.) She makes a bit of a point of jumping in and claiming back the priest’s attention immediately, all smiles and overbearing charm.
So, just throwing this out there - was she just pissed off to not be the centre of everyone’s attention for a moment, or did she actually pick up on their mutual attraction?
