Ugly house to lovely house

Just watching this. They had a budget of 150k, but the final cost was 350k! Aargh, what? And George Clarke said the architect did a good job. Lovely build it may be, but how can being so much over budget be a good job?
I never know where people get the extra money they suddenly have to unexpectedly fork out.either.

Is that the house? 😱 How the hell do you go 350k over budget on a giant shed? God, what a total waste of money. They must feel foolish and gutted.

PickAChew · 17/03/2019 19:17

God, no, the giant shed probably cost more.

This has the before and after of the outside

And yes, if we have the patio doors open on a summer evening, the mice come running in as soon as they hear a crisp bag rustle. The local rodents seem to be particularly partial to salt and vinegar kettle chips.

Watching this with interest this week, it’s a couple of miles from me these houses are very cheap for London, mainly I think as transport is not great, not much in the way of facilities & it’s quite a rough area with a fair bit of anti social behaviour, really hope that dont get railroaded into spending silly money.

Malotkins · 21/03/2019 20:27

It's making me very angry. Why start work before planning permission is granted particularly when the design is not the norm. Same last week. Such a risk. Nice fence though. And why is her husband going away for a months holiday when she is about to give birth!?!!

Cyclewidow46 · 21/03/2019 20:36

Just started watching in time to see them pick bright orange window frames!
Now I can't wait to see what they look like Smile

Haffdonga · 21/03/2019 20:36

The builder went on holiday. Not the husband.

dontcallmelen · 21/03/2019 20:41

What is this obsession with grey cladding.

dontcallmelen · 21/03/2019 20:46

Crikey not sure about the orange windows.

Stardustmemories · 21/03/2019 20:53

Don’t like it. I can’t even see the appeal.

PinkDrink · 21/03/2019 20:57

Inside is great, but the outside is going to look dated VERY quickly...

dontcallmelen · 21/03/2019 21:04

Yes I thought the inside was lovely & really practical, yy I the outside will date very quickly, especially that very dark grey render.

GroggyLegs · 21/03/2019 21:22

They were a lovely couple, I'd love to go over for a BBQ.

But I hope they're planning to stay there a while as with that grey & orange it'll never sell.

I really liked the tile sink though.

Popcorninapot · 21/03/2019 21:29

This programme annoys me. They bully them into starting early. The designs are so obviously architect vanity and risky for planning. They end up spending more than they want to. A good architect listens to a brief and a budget and uses their skills to achieve it in a clever way! Harrumph.

thenightsky · 21/03/2019 21:36

I loved the inside of tonight's. But that grey horrible outside was disgusting. At least they can paint over it when they need to sell I suppose. And respray the orange weirdness.

dontcallmelen · 21/03/2019 21:40

I’m not sure they would recoup the money spent though if they were to sell, those houses rise in value are incredibly slow in comparison to most of London, as it’s not a very desirable area.

longearedbat · 21/03/2019 22:13

Well, I am all for a bit of individuality, but the exterior of that house this week is just horrible. It sticks out like a sore thumb and it's just so dark. I would hate to come back to that each night. The inside was fine though. Honestly, this programme is enough to put you off architects for good.

OP posts:
PinkDrink · 21/03/2019 22:26

The sticking out like a sore thumb aspect also bothered me. It feels quite antisocial somehow, a bit like two fingers to the rest of the street. Not really fostering a spirit of community. If I lived in a neighbouring property I can imagine I'd be proper fed up.

SapatSea · 22/03/2019 08:25

The outdoor brbecue/kitchen in these programmes always make me laugh. The bleedin oven is just beside the french doors! The British weather means it all rusts up and goes yucky pretty quickly, those copper pipes on the outdoor sink will be green.

I agree that the outside will be dated quite quickly. They were a lovely couple and they didn't go much over budget. Actually getting builders in London can be difficult and I think the price they paid given the eye watering rates builders charge in London was great value for the amount of work they had done.

Both the couples so far are lucky to have family close by to stay with for the build.

FabulouslyFab · 22/03/2019 08:27

They should rename it Ugly House to Uglier House!

Singlenotsingle · 22/03/2019 08:34

It was horrendous, Dark grey outside with orange windows? And the inside wasn't much better, not homely at all! How on Earth are they ever going to sell it, when the time comes to sell? I saw another one in the last series, in Lexden. That was horrible too. Pure self indulgence by the architect!

AnyFucker · 22/03/2019 08:37

Plywood furniture was bloody awful.

SapatSea · 22/03/2019 10:17

Was the ply wood sealed? If not it'll get finger marks on it and get dirty and it won't wash off.

Iceinthecider · 22/03/2019 10:30

SapatSea I thought the same thing about the plywood, if not sealed won't it start to get greasy dark marks on it, especially with sticky kids hands.
Really didn't like this week's house. It stood out so much from the rest of the street and not in a good way. It will date very quickly too. I don't understand the obsession with cladding on this programme. Nearly every house has either metal or wood cladding.

thenightsky · 22/03/2019 10:33

Was the ply wood sealed? If not it'll get finger marks on it and get dirty and it won't wash off.

That's exactly what I thought.
