Surprised there's no thread on this. Did anyone watch it last night or has the series reached its natural end and is no longer attracting viewers?

Surely it's time for Doc Turner to get an assistant?

user1457017537 · 24/01/2019 09:12

I loved the scenes of the nuns singing compline at the end. Beautiful voices

user1457017537 · 24/01/2019 09:12

That used to feature in the programme.

ppeatfruit · 24/01/2019 09:24

I like Vanessa Redgrave's voiceover a lot. I think it encapsulates the beauty, tragedy and sweetness of the series.

MissDollyMix · 24/01/2019 10:53

Oh I like that idea! Doc Turner could get a sexy new sidekick who could be a love interest for Trixie...

Clionba · 24/01/2019 17:16

Trixie's voice is soooo irritating. She's probably trying to base it on old films or TV shows, but it grates. Particularly as everyone else sounds normal. Sr Hilda is quite posh, but normal.
A doctor to assist Turner? Yes! Maybe a woman?

WinterHoliday · 24/01/2019 19:38

I don't understand why Timothy has to share a room with Teddy. I thought the whole point of the Turners moving to the new house was that they would have more space. Surely Teddy would share with Angela if necessary seeing as they are both small children but I would have thought there was enough room for them all to have their own room (with May and Angela sharing until May leaves - if she does).

BikeRunSki · 24/01/2019 20:08

Yeh, Iike May is going to leave. Wink Something horrific is going to happen to her potential adoptive parents. I don’t have any insider info or anything, i’ve just been watching CTM for a long time!!

Clionba · 24/01/2019 20:30

But if something happens to May's adoptive parents, surely she'd stay with the Turners?

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 24/01/2019 21:34

May and Angela are so cute, I hope may stays. I keep forgetting they have a baby boy as well!!

I think Timothy should get a girlfriend.

BikeRunSki · 24/01/2019 22:42

That’s what I meant Clionba!

I reckon her adoptive parents will turn out to be rich, snooty and completely unsuitable in some way. There will be major Turner family angst " we can't let her go with these people" and eventually they'll somehow get to keep her.

Clionba · 25/01/2019 04:48

Sorry, Bike, I see what you mean.

Were they real people ? I mean the characters Annette played and others

I only ask as the original few series stuck to the books by Jennifer Worth as I read them . That was some years ago now so I am just wondering if they are making up characters now, among the real (the sisters, the midwives who did exist) to keep the series going

Don't get me wrong, I love it , just wondering really.

Bittermints · 25/01/2019 11:07

I read somewhere that Heidi Thomas got a lot of letters during the first series reminiscing about Poplar and similar areas/situations which she used as the starting point for later series after she'd exhausted what she could do with the books. She sent researchers to interview the promising sounding correspondents.

SoupDragon · 25/01/2019 11:09

The actress actually speaks like that, pretty much. She did on Strictly anyway.

WhitherShallIWander · 26/01/2019 07:37

I haven’t seen any of the episodes before but I was feeling unwelll this week & binged watched them all available on Netflix. I’m hooked. But I’m missing series 6&7 Sad

I have loved it so much that I’ve downloaded the books.

Question though - are the characters based on actual people or an amalgamation- if anyone knows thanks

SoupDragon · 26/01/2019 09:12

I think it's a bit of both. Some of the characters were a mix of different people and some were actual ones. I think there might be less "real" people in the later series and more based on the general situations various midwives experiences.

HoraceCope · 26/01/2019 09:50

Why does Dr Turner's receptionist wear a hat all the time?

ppeatfruit · 26/01/2019 10:02

Some ladies did wear hats in public in the 40s\50s (my gran did) she's a throwback. They were shocked by the non hat wearing that became fashionable in the 60s.

I don't mind Trixie's voice. It is her own voice.

Clionba · 26/01/2019 10:35

Women maybe only washed their hair once a week. You could wear a hat to keep your hair looking nice. My late mother only ever went out in a headscarf or a hat.

BestIsWest · 26/01/2019 11:04

My Gran and great Aunts would never go anywhere without a hat. They would have been late fifties at the time CTM is set. I have a picture of my gran sitting on the beach in the 1976 heatwave wearing a turban hat and coat.

That said, they would have taken them off indoors.

user1457017537 · 26/01/2019 11:18

In the sixties working class women all had a shampoo and set every Friday or Saturday.
They also put rollers in and went to bed and older women had perms.
