How on earth did he afford to keep multiple families and children? Where did all the money come from?!

WipsGlitter · 01/12/2018 17:56

He was an author and maybe the first wife had her own money.

DoctorTwo · 01/12/2018 18:40

I really enjoyed this too and agree Ruth Wilson is a terrific actor. Can't wait to see her in Luther.

user1457017537 · 02/12/2018 08:22

I thought it was a bit slow. I was really looking forward to it but found it disappointing

xsquared · 02/12/2018 08:57

Bumble, it's on 4th December. Tuesday.

I thought this was believable. The first family lived in a huge detached house, possibly bought when they were the only family (NB house prices so much lower in those days). RW's family lived in a nondescript semi and she was working full time, presumably because financially she had to, to keep the family afloat as Hubby was still supporting the other families. As an author, I guess it would be relatively easy to lie about your income to RW ie pretend less is coming in than is really.
I felt it was clear that RW's family were not as financially secure as the first family, confirmed when First Son said that his mum was getting Hubby's pension, not RW.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/12/2018 13:34

I was totally distracted by the blue colour. Same as in CTM. It's all I can see now!

Boyskeepswinging · 02/12/2018 14:38

Sadly, this current obsession with teal in dramas is bloody everywhere! I first spotted it in The A Word donkeys ago and it's now it's rare when you watch a drama that is not based on a teal palate! The worst of it is, I used to love teal ...

Torvi · 02/12/2018 15:27

Just watched this on iPlayer and really enjoyed it. Great cast.

AnnaNimmity · 02/12/2018 15:34

watched it last night - really enjoyed it. I hadn't realised that Ruth Wilson was playing her own grandmother (just thought it was a coincidence Hmm ) but read up afterwards.

MinesaPinot · 03/12/2018 13:20

Me and DH caught up on this at the weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Really good period detail and great cast. We are looking forward to the next one.

woodhill · 09/12/2018 15:32

This is excellent.

It struck me that it was so important to be married then and this veneer of respectability.

PawneeParksDept · 09/12/2018 18:01

I wonder when she finally told those lads and whether they met their siblings

Twisique · 09/12/2018 20:08

I wondered who actually should have inherited from Mr Wilson, is Alison's house really owned by Gladys?

postitnot · 09/12/2018 22:08

I'm really enjoying it! I wonder how much she suspected over the years... she certainly seems like she wants to keep lying to her sons.
I like the 'blue' colour scheme in the 'present' (ie just after alec dies) in contrast to the warmer colours of her wartime memories.

WipsGlitter · 09/12/2018 22:35

I've just watched episode two. Why did she hide the wallet? She must have known there was something in there.

MerdedeBrexit · 10/12/2018 07:32

The article in the Radio Times explains a lot, PawneeParksDept, postitnot and anyone else who was wondering and doesn't mind possible spoilersGrin It seems to be more "faction" than either fact or fiction, but none the worse for that Grin
I only knew about it because it was mentioned in an AIBU thread about someone's friend's fiance behaving as if he had a secret life, but I'm really glad I looked it up and watched it, it's excellent, I'm really looking forward to the final episode Grin

drspouse · 11/12/2018 21:46

Just watching the last episode, how many more plot twists can they put in? Is it all true?!

BitOfFun · 11/12/2018 22:02

Wow, what a fantastic ending! And what an incredible woman Alison Wilson was. Absolutely loved it.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 11/12/2018 22:16

I enjoyed it. It was nice seeing all the real family members at the end.

BitOfFun · 11/12/2018 22:23

There's a fabulous article here by one of Alison's grandsons, which describes more clearly the facts as they are known. You can find some differences to the script of the television series, but I can understand why certain decisions were made in the telling, for dramatic convenience.

Altogether a fascinating story, and brava to Ruth Wilson for bringing it to us.

Dulra · 12/12/2018 08:16

BitOfFun thanks for sharing that. So appears Alison knew and suspected more before he died. Really interesting story and still not fully resolved. Weird that mi6 still can't release his file because of security reasons makes it all the more intriguing. Great that all the kids and grandkids have met each other and get on.

woodhill · 12/12/2018 20:45

Couldn't read that article without subscribing to ST - shame

JinglingHellsbells · 12/12/2018 20:53

I felt really sorry for the sons because not only had they lost their father but their mother took herself off to a nunnery, so they didn't have the pleasure of a hands-on gran when they had children. I know she said they could still meet her but it seemed a very self-indulgent move on her part considering what her sons had been through.

BitOfFun · 12/12/2018 21:20

Oh, that's such a shame! I've signed up for the free highlights, it only take a sec- might be worth a try?
