Just catching up with it now. I need a Dick in my life. I wonder where they get a group of English people for the weddings from? All of the waiting/kitchen staff are English. Does Steve permanently live there?

ppeatfruit · 14/12/2018 09:12

Angel uses catering staff from England IIRC (it must cost a fair amount). I suppose they could be english speaking locals or english speakers on a working holiday.

They don't say if Steve does live there, maybe nearby? The money comes from Sky (who own Channel 4 now) and maybe from the sale of Angels' parents house, who knows?

anneofavonlee · 14/12/2018 09:26

I wonder what the locals think of them? The mother/daughter shopping trip made me Hmm a bit with them both wearing those kimono things, it just looks a bit try hard.
I thought the children's French would be fluent by now, IIRC they went to a French school?

YouSmellOfBeefAndCheese · 14/12/2018 09:30

I always wonder if it’s caused any rows in their family that her parents upped and left and helped a lot financially/with childcare for her family and her siblings were still in England?
Maybe it’s just what my family are like. Instead of all happily sat round round a table we’d make passive aggressive remarks to each other whilst sharing out the cheese Grin

Deathraystare · 14/12/2018 10:38

I love the way he explains all his jobs - even if I don't understand a word!

I am wondering why we never see his family? Was there perhaps a bit of trouble when he remarried? After all he did that programme with his son James (droool!)

ppeatfruit · 14/12/2018 10:47

Death We see HIS side of the family but not his children from his first marriage (though I thought they came to their wedding).

Did I not hear that Angel is an only child?

anneof She is a " dresser upper" you know those people who live in 1950s type clothes, make up etc.... . I thought the kimonos were a little odd but she carries it off quite well.

YouSmellOfBeefAndCheese · 14/12/2018 12:37

I must be mistaken. Maybe it was his side of the family that came over. He seems to have a big family.

RB68 · 14/12/2018 12:43

Yes he has lots of sisters that camae over and they were just female versions of him was quite amusing. I don't get how big he is given all the running around he does.

They both work like dogs but heart attacks do keep crossing my mind as well.

Would love to go and spend a weekend crafting with Angel - think we would get on like a house on fire.

anneofavonlee · 14/12/2018 12:46

Regarding his side, his older children never get a mention in their biographies and they have never visited on camera. Dick has grandchildren, it would be nice to see them on the show. A room in the turret decorated for them, for example.

Dick and Angel got together in the same year that he split from his wife and I wonder is that a coincidence or not.

anneofavonlee · 14/12/2018 12:50

Angel's parents paid for their granny flat/extension bit of the house, it isn't as if they are being brought over for childcare. They do help out a lot which is lovely. I imagine they do it because they want to, the Strawbridges don't seem to be short of money.

I'm actually happy that in this series budget/lack of finances hasn't been mentioned. It used to drive me mad when Angel would say 'we literally have no money left' and then they would install a £10k lift that Dick couldn't fit into.

Crimbobimbo · 14/12/2018 12:53

I always wonder how his ex wife just feel watching their great new life play out on television.

anneofavonlee · 14/12/2018 13:23

I think his EW is quite simple and eco-firendly? No kimonos or butterfly walls I would imagine.

sharke · 16/12/2018 20:06

Their kids are so cute.

I'd really be surprised now if money was still an issue; many prime time series must have boosted business no end.

sharke · 16/12/2018 20:28

Watching it now, I'd actually love to see more of the day-to-day running of the Chateau. It's all very well strolling around the local market, upholstering an armchair, or pinning a dead butterfly to the wall, but who's cleaning the bogs or doing the school run?

Clionba · 16/12/2018 20:35

I couldn't believe that Dick tried the Eau de Vie! I thought the next shot would be him collapsed on the floor!
Converting the piggery now.

Yes, same.

anneofavonlee · 16/12/2018 22:43

They probably fly a cleaning team in from UK. I doubt Angel will have her elbows down the loos with her beret on and kimono swishing along.

The80sweregreat · 17/12/2018 15:02

I'm intrigued as to who does the cleaning as it's always spotless in the areas that are now done! They must have help with the rooms they have for guests I suppose.
I liked the boot room ( she is so clever with her ideas and finding her bargains) but I wasn't keen on the giraffe legs!
Fancy having a boot room though? I would love a large laundry room with huge washers / tumble dryers and airers.
Bliss!

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 17/12/2018 15:47

Crimbobimbo
I don’t think his ex wife cares. She’s happily remarried doing her own thing. Very into the protection of bees and the environment.

Crimbobimbo · 17/12/2018 18:09

That's good to hear. I always felt bad for her.

The80sweregreat · 17/12/2018 19:53

I don't think Angela knows what his on about half the time either! He explains it all to her while her head is thinking' I must buy those old cinema seats I saw the other day'
They are a good team though.

Glad the first wife has moved on and happy.
It's a huge project for them but seems to work. I couldn't do any of it. Neither could dh!

anneofavonlee · 18/12/2018 06:59

They are a good team but it seems very Dick centric. He does all of the cooking for guests and the building/renos. If something happened to him I don't know that she could carry on the business. Well she coul d, but it would cost a fortune. I wonder how much it costs to have a wedding there?

The80sweregreat · 18/12/2018 09:29

I think that Angela would struggle on her own to run the weddings etc if he wasn't around. Would be a lot and with young kids as well.
Maybe this is all just for the short term anyway? Once it's done it'll be worth a small fortune and they could retire with her mum and dad somewhere smaller! Who knows?
I admire their vision ; I know I couldn't do any of this : they are both so creative and put in the graft.

DonderandBlitzen · 19/12/2018 15:10

I noticed when Angel was in the Brocante that her French is improving. Wonder if she's just picking it up from living there or having lessons.

billysboy · 19/12/2018 18:44

I dont think all is what it seems at the chateau

He earns a lot of money from other tv work that is helping prop it up

I emailed them earlier in the year and got an email back saying we reply to all emails and read them all

I got a reply that was their news letter

All gone a bit to their heads fab place tho and good luck to them but reminds me a bit of river cottage which was great to start with
