is there no French equivalent of English heritage? I think they are desecrating that beautiful space, although the garden is lovely

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 27/11/2018 00:07

Carriemac - you don’t think the house is beautiful?

ppeatfruit · 27/11/2018 08:28

carriemac There are literally THOUSANDS of much older chateaux than theirs in Fr.! They aren't removing the basics from it.

Our house is 15C (built from the stones of the local chateaux ) and has been partially ruined inside by the last residents who plastered/artexed over beautiful cut stones INSIDE Shock Sad we can't afford to have it removed. Dh is no Dick Strawbridge Sad Grin

The one we live by is 10th C and hasn't got a preservation order of the type they have in England! There is a horrible breeze block wall erected bang opposite it's chapel and no one has suggested it's removal! Can you imagine that opposite e.g. Totnes castle? I don't think the local council can afford to preserve it, though they are subsidising archeological digs there.

Though to be fair the french preserve the CENTRES of their towns much more carefully than we do (they don't allow high rise buildings in a lot of them).

Carriemac · 27/11/2018 12:11

I dont really like her taste, such a mish mash although it sometimes works - eg the wallpaper was lovely but the dead flowers on the walls will just be rotten in a years time as she did not press them properly
and the walking trail was like a municipal park FFS- its beautiful countryside why would you ruin it like that

ppeatfruit · 28/11/2018 10:26

Her taste is a great improvement on most of the old french houses I've been to. They major on wallpaper; on the walls, ceilings, doors , if it moves they paper it Grin not low key, neutral colours either, my bedroom was decorated with navy blue woodwork, and papered with navy background and blousy pink, green gold flowers!! OMG! Everywhere!!!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 02/12/2018 21:15

I don’t share her taste, but fuck me they work their socks off.

Honeyroar · 02/12/2018 21:49

I don't like her taste particularly but I agree they put a huge amount of effort and work into what they do (and money!).

Clionba · 03/12/2018 08:15

They certainly don't cut corners. They like to do things properly, which is nice. Rather than do something as cheaply as possible to maximise profits. That wedding was beautiful, what an idyllic setting!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/12/2018 08:21

I would disagree.

They do cut corners, and some of the decorations are a bit slapdash, but it’s such a huge job and expensive job.

They do work their arses off though.

Clionba · 03/12/2018 08:54

I meant they don't just go and get 50 cheap plates. Or a basic place setting. Or put in white tiles and white grout in every bathroom. Or offer a maximum of 3 courses. Or just heat up the beef quickly. Or get plain napkins rather than embroider the couple's names on etc

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/12/2018 08:56

Maybe, but that’s a bit superficial.

I meant building work.

Clionba · 03/12/2018 09:00

I don't know about the build quality, but wasn't Dick an army engineer? He probably has quite high standards.
I don't think I'd have got in that boat, mind you..... Hmm

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/12/2018 09:07

High standards are one thing, a tight budget is something entirely different, and haven’t we all been there?

Dick is really good at building and adapting things.

CurbsideProphet · 03/12/2018 09:08

I love watching this. Although some of their decorative choices aren't to everyone's taste they are passionate about making sure it stays standing for a long time to come. The chateau had been empty for so long it must have been in a state of disrepair.

I love the weddings Smile Angel and Dick look like they work around the clock to give everyone their perfect daySmile

Clionba · 03/12/2018 09:18

I remember the first programme. It was uninhabitable with holes in the floors, no hot water and no functioning toilets. It's been quite a project!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/12/2018 10:07

True.

I might not like everything they’ve done to it, but I appreciate they saved it from complete disrepair.

whatsthestory123 · 03/12/2018 15:10

Ive worked out why Dick has a full beard,he dosent get time to shave

The mans a machineGrin

That beard and moustache must irritate Angel's face though!! I make my dh use beard oil. it's lovely.

DontHarshMyMello · 09/12/2018 20:45

I love the neon sign for the grandma this week

Clionba · 09/12/2018 21:14

I loved little Dorothy's restaurant with Grandad. "it's quiet tonight" "have some champagne wine"!

ppeatfruit · 10/12/2018 07:41

I recorded last night's. I love Dorothy anyway, she was so frightened for her brother, when they were on the outing to see those giant moving animal machines in Nantes!

Tigresswoods · 10/12/2018 07:43

@Clionba I'll come with you to Dorothy's cafe for champagne wine. Sounds delightful.

Such a fascinating series & just compelling to watch. The wedding "experience" is something else.

Procne · 10/12/2018 08:58

I appreciated that Angel didn't want to stamp her own personality and design tastes too much on her parents' space, but I did find the 'Café Grandma' sign slightly strange. I mean, I love those neon signs, but it seemed as if she'd taken some offhand remark of her mother or one of the children (I didn't see the start -- is someone saying 'Café Grandma' a thing?) and set it in stone, labelling the kitchen as all about the grandchildren, rather than also just her parents' living space?

I was also a bit puzzled by how it connects with the rest of their living quarters -- aren't they in the same coachhouse building? But I didn't see an interconnecting door...?

ppeatfruit · 11/12/2018 11:34

Procne I 've just watched a recording of the episode, Angel says that her mum and dad are really only there to look after their grandchildren (they obviously discussed it before) and her Mum loves to cook esp. for the family, Hence 'Cafe' Grandma'.

I couldn't see an interior connecting door either. (they may have put one in) But in the 'longere' houses in Fr. there are front doors from the outside straight into all the main rooms.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 11/12/2018 12:47

There is a door in the corner near the fridge.
On the immediate left as they come in the bigger set of external doors.
