Did any Poly people watch Louis Theroux last night?

Just wondering what peiple thought of it as a representation of poly families.

I liked it.

I thought it showcased a lot of happiness and family ties. It showed that kids can be happy within poly families but it also showed the realities of it too. Such as a new person coming in to the fold or one person wanting a different living set up (experienced both)

I liked it because it showed normal poly families through good events and struggling just as all mono couples do too.

I don't imagine there's many poly families on MN but might be a few :)

Have NC btw x

None of them looked happy at all!

PinkAvocado · 05/11/2018 16:17

I caught half of it and thought at least one person in each relationship came across as so desperate to have one of the others in their life that they agreed to be poly rather than it genuinely being a mutual desire. I thought a few seemed sad and at least theee I saw said they’d rather have their partner to themselves.

WendyCope · 05/11/2018 17:39

They seemed absolutely miserable and Louis thought so too.

Whitney168 · 05/11/2018 17:42

Another one who thought there were very few happy people in the set-ups.

Kewcumber · 05/11/2018 17:48

Yes I also thought that there was generally at least one person in each of the relationships who was doing it to avoid losing their partner. That person didn't seem happy despite insisting they were.

Two of the in particular I felt very sorry for and it didn't seem at all like a genuine choice for them.

LoniceraJaponica · 05/11/2018 17:51

I didn't see it, but it is interesting that the only poly poster on here thought that there were a lot of happy families, and everyone else thought that each set up had at least one unhappy person in it.

What channel was it on? I would like to watch it on catch up.

AnyFucker · 05/11/2018 17:51

I saw bits of it. I thought most of the folk looked thoroughly fucking miserable.

Whitney168 · 05/11/2018 17:53

Yes, did rather make me wonder if PolyAnnie was the Heidi in their relationship ...

YessicaHaircut · 05/11/2018 17:54

It was on bbc 2. I’m going to watch on catch up this week too.

HollowTalk · 05/11/2018 17:55

I thought it was the worst advert for poly lifestyles! Poor Louis looked as though he was going to sink through the floor with depression.

EdWinchester · 05/11/2018 17:57

How bizarre. I felt very sad for them as they all seemed immensely unhappy. It was wretched.

Whitney168 · 05/11/2018 17:57

Joe was the only man that I thought seemed entirely happy with the situation. Every other man looked extremely uncomfortable/shut down/jealous a good portion of the time.

auberbene · 05/11/2018 18:00

I felt so sorry for Jerry. I think he was just going along with whatever Heidi wanted because he didn't want to lose her.

Made me sad to watch.

ShatnersBassoon · 05/11/2018 18:01

They seemed at best insecure, at worst thoroughly miserable (other than the threesome of boardgamers who all seemed to be satisfied with the arrangement, but that set-up was more stable). The people at either end i.e. those who weren't actively taking part in multiple relationships were not satisfied with their lot.

They were all very good at reciting the theory of the practice. They must have all read the same book.

Armchairanarchist · 05/11/2018 18:04

@polyannie I think I watched a different programme to you.

Oblomov18 · 05/11/2018 18:08

There are quite a few very prominent poly posters on mn.
I wonder what they thought. I can guess!

2128Cl · 05/11/2018 18:09

I only caught some of it but I thought they seemed quite unhappy!

Nothisispatrick · 05/11/2018 18:12

I also thought most of them seemed miserable. Except Heidi and joe of course, who were happy to do whatever they wanted despite the impact on their families. Why everyone loved Heidi so much I do not understand.

newtlover · 05/11/2018 18:14

I agree with most of the other posters, I thought there was a lot of misery there. I'd be interested in an honest view from the children involved, but I think that will come in their memoirs in 20 years time.
Felt very sorry for Louis at the cringy massage/food party
Cannot think of anything worse than being semi naked, blindfolded and have strangers paw you and feed you food, yuk yuk yuk

Kewcumber · 05/11/2018 18:17

Jerry was going along with it because he had hopes of a threesome with Heidi and Joe in exchange for putting up with her deciding they were poly.

Heidi looked horrified - sorry Jerry, that just ain't happening.

Louis "Would you give up Joe if being with him made Jerry unhappy"

Heidi looking confused says disingenuously "Oh that just wouldn't happen, it just isn;t possible"

Jerry sits there looking fucking unhappy.

BambooToothbrush · 05/11/2018 18:17

It struck me as being a fucking complicated and miserable way to live. Joe and Heidi were happy enough having their shag-fest and giving no shits about the damage it was doing to the other people in their lives. Everyone else seemed unhappy and jealous to varying degrees.

CherryPavlova · 05/11/2018 18:20

They all looked miserable. So sad for the children. It felt like they all had real problems maintaining relationships with any degree of normality and were trying to persuade themselves life was good.

PolyAnnie · 05/11/2018 18:22

Hmm.

Well I've been in mono relationships that have had just as many issues.

I've always been much happier in my poly relationships. I find there's so much less pressure to be the ultimate partner.

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 05/11/2018 18:24

I don't feel any "pressure" in my monogamous relationship.
