It was gorgeous, wasn't it? I'm biased because Mark & Karen are one of my favourite ever couples, but it was in another league to what we get now: tails, classy dress, no props, no theme, no faffing, whole dance done in hold, recognisable choreography. Ah, happy days 

I particularly appreciate that you can see Mark driving the dance, proving he'd been taught the basics well. Ditto when Alesha & Curtains Cutler managed to improvise their foxtrot when he forgot it, because she'd been taught foxtrot basics and how to be lead. I don't think any of the pros teach like that now, except maybe Pasha.

Slinks in wailing, coz am waaay to short to dance with most of the pros. No point in becoming mildly famous now,< sits in corner sulking>

I think you qualify automatically for AJ,dotcallmelen. He seems to get the shortest partner automatically.

Can't believe they're doing an all stars version of strictly for the Christmas special & it won't even have Danny Mac, now if he'd have replaced Ann Widdecombe that would have been a good line up.

I hope they don't lumber Neil with her.. I'd like him to partner Anita Rani.

There's only Anita he could be with, but then there's also Graziano and Gorka who could maybe dance with her, so maybe he'll be sidelined for the special.

I do wonder what the point of the 'spare' pros is - it's not like they're needed for padding out the already bloated and overly frenetic pro dances 

Spare pros are usually there in case a dancing pro gets injured, or at least that was Neil and Chloe's purpose the last few years.

But in the past when a pro couldn't perform on a particular week they used the last evicted same-sex pro of the series - when Gorka danced with Anastasia, for example, or Iveta trained with Sid. And for years now, there have been lots of dancers who work on the choreo but who don't get flagged up as being a 'pro' on the show or being expected to hang around the Clauditorium every week with a fixed grin on their face (Chris and Jacqui, for instance), as well as those who pop up in the pro dances (e.g. Ashleigh Hunter, discussed earlier in the thread).

I guess what I don't get is why Luba, Johannes and Graziano were subject to s big announcement as new pros this series, given a 'welcome to Strictly' showcase dance, but then only Graziano was partnered up and the other two mainly stand around like tins of milk. What's the point?

Well, Luba has been on the show for a couple of years at least. She's also Giovanni's professional partner so that explains why she dances with him in all the pro routines. No idea about Johannes but he did the Jive demo on ITT with Luba, so I guess we'll see my re of him there.

SheCame, I totally agree about the men leading the dance. Just doesn't happen so much any more.

Re: Xmas special, how do you all know it's 'all stars'? I haven't seen anything about it. I used to like it when they had a mix of previous contestants and randoms (I remember one year Sheila Hancock was on it and was FABULOUS). I like some of the previous slebs but it's a bit boring not having anyone different.

They announced the participants on ITT last night: the resolutely unamusing Widdicombe, Flackers, Aston, Anita Rani, Jake Wood & (praise be!) the legend that is Michael Vaughan.
