just bumping this back onto my threads!

(MrsWHo btw)

MerryXMoss · 14/12/2007 15:22

Yay it's nice to be back and to see y'all again!

I have been watching lots of Classic Who recently. I got given a Hartnell episode recently, "The Aztecs," and was interested to see that it wasn't really a sci-fi at all, it was more of an historical episode. No aliens, no monsters, no anomalies (sorry, that's Trek isn't it?) just some Aztecs!

I read in one of my Who books that quite a few of the early episodes were like that, no "bug eyed monsters."

Still enjoyed it though, better second time around when I realised it wasn't really sci-fi and I could stop watching out for when the Priest was going to turn into an alien or something along those lines...

So looking forward to Xmas now... anyone seen the advent calendar on the BBC web site?

Chamomile · 15/12/2007 22:30

Catherine Tate says DT is not doing 5th series news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7145965.stm

Desiderata · 15/12/2007 22:39

May I join the thread?

ds has been hooked on Dr Who since he was just two. Now, just three, he's obsessed.

My first Dr Who was Jon Pertwee. I loved him. He looked just like my granddad.

Chamomile · 15/12/2007 22:49

We're similar ages then, Desiderata. I remember Jon Pertwee well.

VVVExcitedAboutChristmasQV · 15/12/2007 22:53

DS is entirely obsessed with Dr Who, and he's only 2.5.

He thinks ToysRUs is Dr Who's house (because there is a huge display of Dr Who stuff in there, and there is a huge Dr Who banner outside the store.

PartridgeinaRustyBearTree · 15/12/2007 23:02

Originally the idea was to have every other epiosode a purely historical one - in fact the first story (An Unearthly Child) was one of these - set in prehistoric times. After that came the first Dalek story, then one about Marco Polo. The Aztecs and the French Revolution story were the other historical ones in the first season.

By the second season the appeal of the alien stories was becoming clear & that season only had two purely historical stories, the Romans and the Crusaders, although there was one set in 1066, but it turned out that events were being manipulated by a rogue Time Lord - no, not the Master, but the Meddling Monk.

Season 3 again had two historical stories, the Trojans and War of God, about the wars of Religion in 16th century France.

In Season 4 we had the appalling OK Corral story & one about smugglers set in 17th century Cornwall, and then after the Doctor's regeneration into Pat Troughton, the Highlanders, which brought Jamie (Frazer Hines) into the Tardis and was the last purely historical story until Black Orchid, a Peter Davison story set in the 20's

UnquietDad · 15/12/2007 23:11

Don't read too much into what Catherine Tate says. There's been no official word from the BBC yet. And the fifth series is TWO years away! DT may not have even made his own mind up yet. What is heartening is that he won't have the same "typecasting" worries as past Doctors had - he's had the freedom to do other stuff while playing the Doctor.

bossybaublesinherbritches · 16/12/2007 00:30

I don't know how the dear boy keeps up - he must have a fearsome shooting schedule, plus rehearsals & all those photo shoots for the fanzines etc!!

He'll be around less next year as he's playing hamlet isn't he?

MerryXMoss · 16/12/2007 05:26

IS he? Oh wow I would love to see that. Is he at the RSC in Stratford?

Rustybear, interesting about the historical episodes. Will keep an eye out; feel I'm missing an essential part of DW history atm!!

UnquietDad yes I'm not reading too much into what CT says either. (Or maybe I'm just sticking my head in the sand!)

Hi Desiderata, yes come and join our merry throng!!

MerryXMoss · 16/12/2007 05:28

VVV at your ds.

UnquietDad · 16/12/2007 13:25

VVV - yes, well, it is bigger on the... You know the rest.

VVVExcitedAboutChristmasQV · 16/12/2007 16:47

He's in love with Dalips

Mind you, DD calls them garleks.......

PortAndLemonaid · 16/12/2007 17:24

DS had a huge meltdown in Waterstones yesterday because he wanted (no, sorry, apparently "needed" ) a Tardis. Still considering buying it for Christmas (haven't really bought him much so far as we knew relatives would go overboard).

MerryXMoss · 17/12/2007 11:37

I'd love a TARDIS for Christmas. A real one, mind you. Not sure dh has much chance of getting me one of those though. Think he'd better stick with DVDs of classic Who.

UnquietDad · 17/12/2007 11:39

What are you on at the moment, Mossy?
DD and DS are currently enjoying "The Masque of Mandragora" (VHS).

MerryXMoss · 17/12/2007 11:52

I'm "between DVDs" at the moment!

I've just finished The Aztecs and am too skint to buy any more. Hence I'm awaiting dh's Xmas contribution to my set!!

The Masque of Mandragora - isn't that a bit like the Da Vinci Code.... but good?

UnquietDad · 17/12/2007 12:07

You know you can watch a lot of the B&W oldies on YouTube?

Mandragora is very good actually. Renaissance themes and flowery dialogue.

MerryXMoss · 17/12/2007 12:19

I didn't know that actually. I'll have to have a little look.

The computer screen is tiny and pokey though and my telly is a huge widescreen one... I wonder if I can enlist the help of dh's computer genius friend to transfer any onto DVD? Hmm.

UnquietDad · 17/12/2007 12:37

I don't know if you can transfer YouTube streaming to DVD. I think you can only do that if you have downloaded the file. Which is of course illegal.

MerryXMoss · 17/12/2007 13:00

Oh yeah, of course. You'd not catch me doing owt like that!

MerryXMoss · 17/12/2007 13:02

Or should that have read, "you'll not catch me doing owt like that"?

SueBaRoomForAMincePie · 19/12/2007 09:31

Seen the press releases this morning? More evidence that the Doctor is getting to be a bit of an tart in his old age...

UnquietDad · 19/12/2007 09:43

I know! He goes seven incarnations without even sniffing a woman, and then snogs half a dozen in the space of fifty (Doctor) years or so.

SueBaRoomForAMincePie · 19/12/2007 09:48

I don't want Tennant to go, but I hope when he does it might put an end to it. Thing is, looking at the pictures, it'll just be another silly-arse convoluted 'genetic-transfer' gubbins.

Russell, admit it, you just like watching DT snog people.
