I know it's just come out today, but I was working from home and binged 5 episodes in the process. Anyone else watching?

Watched the first two episodes and really enjoying it! Perfect for this time of the year. I think the acting's been really good, too, especially some of the kids.

And always delighted to see Michiel Huisman, I think he's adorable Blush

WhoWants2Know · 14/10/2018 16:21

Definitely smart arse points for guessing the episode 5 twist.

I was expecting the last episode to really ramp up the scare factor, but it actually felt like a calm "let's all discuss what we've all learned" vibe.

And I was left with questions. Some of the ghosts were kind of explained, but who was the tall dude, or the thing at the bottom of the dumb waiter?

youngestisapsycho · 14/10/2018 16:37

I worked out the tall dude but in episode 9 I think so better not say yet.

ISaySteadyOn · 14/10/2018 17:38

So, hang on, does it relate to Shirley Jackson's novel at all or is it something completely different?

WhoWants2Know · 14/10/2018 17:50

It's completely different.

WhoWants2Know · 14/10/2018 17:51

I'm going to have to re-watch episode 9

The story Theo’s girlfriend tells her about Fear and Guilt....

youngestisapsycho · 14/10/2018 20:47

Sorry.. it’s episode 10, about 30 mins in.

BoomTish · 14/10/2018 22:29

I’m on episode 6 and really enjoying it. Struggled with all the flash backs and forwards at the start, but fine from maybe episode 3 onwards.

I want to shake the parents.

Is it me or are all the adult female actors very similar looking? Find it a bit difficult to differentiate the sisters from each other, and also the mortician’s assistant.

youngestisapsycho · 14/10/2018 22:32

I love the way scenes carry across episodes, seen from difffernt characters points of view... and then something suddenly clicks and makes sense.

NomorebloodyBing · 14/10/2018 23:29

Oh my god I’m watching it now and it’s bloody good! Binge watched to episode 3 already, should stop soon though as I’m such a scaredy cat I’ll need to watch something light and funny before I can sleep tonight.

Processedpea · 14/10/2018 23:40

Really liked this but still prefer the book,60s film

longwayoff · 15/10/2018 05:42

Processed, I agree. All subtlety lost in CGI. Less is more. ah well.

NomorebloodyBing · 15/10/2018 10:53

Ugh. So I watched the whole thing (who needs sleep!?) lol

I’m quite disappointed with the ending, I was hoping for more of a cliffhanger ending, it was all wrapped up a little too neatly and ‘happy ending’ for me.

Kittysacunt · 15/10/2018 23:38

Can someone PM the tall man ghost? I haven’t worked it out Blush

EdWinchester · 15/10/2018 23:49

We watched first 2 tonight. Really enjoyed it. Dh scares easily and was a nervous wreck 😂

Found it a bit hard to follow at first as all of the adult female characters looked the same to us.

Magicpaintbrush · 16/10/2018 09:58

This is a brilliant series, albeit I am only watching it during broad daylight as it's too scary to watch at night!!! I'm on episode 5 at the moment.

The characters and family relationships add so much more depth to the story than your usual ghost mystery, it makes you care about them all. I feel particularly sorry for Nell and Luke - especially Luke, no wonder he turned to drugs!!! Interestingly the actor who plays him is British and I think his mum is the fashion designer Betty Jackson - I remember watching him in Larkrise to Candleford!

The actress who plays grown up Theo reminds me of Angelina Jolie somehow, her demeanour and looks. She is a great character, very feisty.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 16/10/2018 10:42

Loved this series, binge watched over 2 days Blush

Disappointed with the last episode though, could’ve been better imo.

WhoWants2Know · 16/10/2018 10:56

I went back and watched the scene in Episode 10 where Theo's girlfriend (in the vision) explains (sort of) the tall man and the body in the basement.

I agree that the ending felt a bit too happy and nicely tied up. And it kind of doesn't make sense that a place that is "hungry" and feeding on people would just stop.

I'm hoping for more series. It would be good to see what all happened with the original Hill family in the first place. Some of it is alluded to, but doesn't all make sense.

Magicpaintbrush · 16/10/2018 13:24

Spoiler alerts would be good for anybody who is posting about stuff that happens at the end. Not all of us have finished watching yet....

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 16/10/2018 14:36

I’ve finished it and overall it was an enjoyable, if spooky watch. Certainly all the “what” questions are mostly answered.

I am, however, left with the question of why? Why was the house hungry and for what exactly? People’s souls? Was it built on a Hell mouth?

I’d like another series with some back story, that might be fun.

Fishandthechips · 16/10/2018 22:51

Im halfway through the second episode and working out whether to continue with it or not. How jump scary is it? I really dont do well with jump scares but love a good creepy horror.

Dandybelle · 16/10/2018 23:01

So I watched most of episode 1 the other night but fell asleep (Blush) and I want to keep watching but DP is at work all night and I'm home alone just me and DD and I'm concerned I'm gonna scare myself shitless and not sleep. How scary is it...? Any comparisons?

WhoWants2Know · 18/10/2018 06:35

It has a couple of jump scares, but for most of the creepy stuff you can tell by the music that something creepy is coming. It's atmospheric and spooky, but I wasn't hiding behind my fingers or anything.

Just started watching the series last night. Had to look away when Luke was under the bed and the tall man's hand came down! Shock Then has to go upstairs on my own.
