I've bought the book. So I may not be back.

Bestseller · 09/10/2018 17:25

We did see baby in the buggy at the airport, I watched it twice to check!

madeoficecream · 09/10/2018 17:31

I watched it all through again and now I reckon that the baby dies in the car seat on the way to the cottage when they are talking about the bush fires... I think the airport is the last time you can see the baby clearly alive. On the plane at the end you can see the baby blinking....
When they get to the cottage she never turns round with the baby and she says the age so precisely and then throws up... that I think the baby is dead in her arms at that point...

So my guess is the baby has died in the car seat on the way to the cottage... either from sids or whatever she was dropping in its mouth on the plane....
And because her husband does not want to ruin his chances of getting custody of his daughter he convinces her to go along with his plan of framing Alex for the kidnapping of the baby. So they go to the cottage to discuss what to do rather than going to his mums for dinner straight away.... and thats when the cleaner comes in etc

That is my guess!!! We will see whether it is correct...

Its so hard not to just google it lol!!!

SoupDragon · 09/10/2018 17:43

I’ve just watched it to and I agree. When they are at the shack, he’s talking on the phone to Chloe and she looks around and you then see her opening the rear door to look at the baby. Then the scen cuts. I think she discovers him dead at that point and then they argue as per the online guy’s story.

whenskiesaregreyRETURNS · 09/10/2018 18:01

Anyone else think those 'people' in the bedroom that were posting on social media all people that Jo had invented? That's why they were depicted as in the bedroom, as they were really her? So therefore she made up the bit about them having an argument by the road?

placemats · 09/10/2018 18:07

All I can say at this point is that the book is fantastic. It really is worth a read. I haven't finished it yet. Probably will tonight after bake off.

jmh740 · 09/10/2018 18:10

I'm really enjoying it and trying really hard not to Google the ending. Part of me thinks the baby is dead and the parents have either killed him or are hiding his death but if he's dead why is she still expressing?

MissEliza · 09/10/2018 18:11

I've just rewatched that clip too and I think that theory is correct. Gold star to Undercover!

madeoficecream · 09/10/2018 18:16

yeah the expressing thing threw me... and it seemed very particular about focusing on the husband saying 'we can have them put this in the fridge'... like they expected to be using that milk at some point.... which would indicate they were hiding the child somewhere rather than him being dead..... so that confused me!!

But then her pain when she wakes up at MILs house... that indicates she knows her baby to be dead...

confusing!!!

I read an interview where it said there were lots of red herrings so no one guessed what was going on too early

MissEliza · 09/10/2018 18:25

Alex seems like a decent person, much preferable to Jo or Alasdair. Alasdair treated her with contempt in his mothers kitchen, despite her trying to show sympathy.

madeoficecream · 09/10/2018 18:29

I think Alasdair seems like and abusive bellend... But I think Alex is also quite seriously flawed (not as bad as him however)

But the passive way that Jo is being portrayed is making me think that there will be some kind of twist where she might be either being seriously abused by Alasdair or she may actually be the one calling all the shots... id err towards the second scenario because she has been so carefully portrayed as an innocent victim who is confused and struggling... shes been portrayed in this very blank manner which just makes me think its been done to mislead people

Undercoverbanana · 09/10/2018 18:45

Does anyone else think that 14 year old Chloe is portrayed as very seems very childlike and vulnerable? I wonder if this is to make her appear innocent and that it could not be possible that she could be guilty of something?

I wonder if there is a very angry, violent girl in there (she hit her teacher, as Alex mentioned).

No idea how she could have harmed Noah but ........????

Something about her “apparent” childishness makes me wonder ......

pepperjack · 09/10/2018 18:47

Completely missed the bit where she has black eye and bruises when she's arrested!
Have to rewatch

dingit · 09/10/2018 18:47

I think Chloe is involved, due to her reaction when she realised her mother had been arrested.

Delatron · 09/10/2018 18:55

In the present day scenes Jo is not behaving like a woman who has lost her baby or murdered her husband. Unless it’s years later. You’d think if she was on trial she would crumble, as she’s portrayed as a weak victim in the flashback scenes.

WheelyCote · 09/10/2018 18:55

Loving this theory. Might rewatch!!

QueSera · 09/10/2018 19:04

I'm loving The Cry! Very sad and distressing, though, but well done.

When they were on the plane on the way to Australia, and the other passengers were on the mum's case about the baby crying - it made me think of the finale of MASH where (stop reading if you don't want to know) Hawkeye keeps telling a woman holding a noisy chicken to keep the chicken quiet, otherwise the enemy would find them - the woman is so distressed about the noise that she smothers the chicken to death to stop it making noise; but it turned out that Hawkeye's memory had altered the story - it wasn't a chicken she was holding, it was her baby.

Also made me think of the possibility that they might have given the baby some sort of drug to make it stop crying, but which may have killed the baby.

WheelyCote · 09/10/2018 19:05

Ooo good one Que

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/10/2018 20:12

Well, I was so intrigued by the first episode that I bought the book and devoured it in one sitting. It's rivetting!

However, they have changed a lot for the TV: plotlines, locations, characters so I can happily watch, wondering which way they are taking the story.

Do read the book after the series finishes though. You won't regret it!

nosleepnow · 09/10/2018 20:48

I bought the book too but I thought they'd stuck really close to the book???

I'm still going to watch though to see what happens

MissEliza · 09/10/2018 21:39

Bore do you think it's worth reading the book after watching the series?
We had an early am flight last month. There was a baby who cried A LOT. I had had a sleepless night and wanted to cry myself when the baby woke me up after I'd managed to fall asleep. However I was really hacked off on the parents' behalf when a steward came up and asked if there was anything he could do help ie shut your baby up. Perhaps it's because I've walked in their shoes. That scene made me feel stressed!

MsMiaWallace · 09/10/2018 22:53

I would like to think that the baby is still alive somewhere??

Otherwise overdosed on meds. Hence hiding yellow bib.

I believe they're framing ex wife.

Very interesting!!

SouthWestmom · 09/10/2018 22:59

What was that stuff she was swigging - was it the same in all the bottles?

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/10/2018 01:38

MissEliza Yes! More insight into characters/motivations etc and you can see where the TV series has deviated from the original.

But I always prefer the book to film/TV although I can enjoy both.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/10/2018 07:06

What was that stuff she was swigging - was it the same in all the bottles? *Noeuf, I think she complained that her back was hurting and that is when she took a swig (of oramorph?) from the bottle (if you recall Alistair asked the stewardess for some water too). But it looked to me as if there were two bottles... And didn't she give the baby something after the elderly lady commented that he could be teething (hence why the wiping of the baby's face with the yellow bib could be important).
