Anyone going to be watching the new Doctor Who now it is a woman?
Love Jodie as an actress. Never been fussed on the doctor before!!

Actually there have always been a lot of pointless deaths in Doctor Who - hence the Ninth Doctor’s joy in The Doctor Dances -‘Just this once - everybody lives!’

IamEarthymama · 08/10/2018 21:57

Just watched The Woman Who Fell to Earth with my wife and We absolutely loved it.
We stopped watching when Catherine Tate joined the cast, she is infuriating in whatever she does.
Loved Matt Smith, but found Peter Capaldi storylines very dry.

It felt like a programme for older children tonight, not for adults.
I liked the Dr's energy, they are usually crazy until they have fully regenerated!
She went to the charity shop for her clothes, I bloody well loved that too.

Then I watched the 'who is going to be along soon' part and got very excited.
Julie Hesmondaigh, Chris Noth, Alan Cumming, Phyllis Logan, and more.

I hope it's going to attract lots of children, the Dr Who Experience in Cardiff needs a boost and I think this will draw them in. We have watched in the past with various grandchildren but the last few series didn't interest them. I think we will give it a try with the new Dr, they will be just a little scared.

Doctor - Adult Female Alien, bring it on!

Thought that had closed down?

ContessasGulagSpaDay · 08/10/2018 22:18

Well we enjoyed it! The DC asked to watch it again this evening (they're 7 and 6). I love that the first full series of Dr Who that they ever watch will have a female Doctor. They'll be the ones muttering in a few years that a male Dr seems a bit odd but they'll give him a chance and judge on the writing Grin

nowifi · 08/10/2018 22:19

I really liked it! Liked Capaldi but this writing seems much easier to follow, love Bradley Walsh and thought Jodie was great, sure it is a bit of a PC cast but I think it works.

WhirlwindHugs · 08/10/2018 22:25

There was loads of deaths in the Christopher ecceleston series.

I think it is okay, a lot of the best kids books contain a lot of death!

EnidButton · 08/10/2018 22:33

I know we all have different tastes and I can understand that some people enjoyed it even if I, and others, didn't really. That's fine, I hope I'll like the next episode more, Chibnall's previous written episodes aren't my favourites either. But I am a bit baffled by those saying Jodie was fantastic, wonderful, amazing etc (on Twitter). Surely good and bad acting isn't so subjective and I honestly thought that was bad acting. I could see her thinking about which face to pull next and reeling off the lines and waiting for her cues. Even given that the first episode is usually the new Doctor adjusting and finishing off.

EnidButton · 08/10/2018 22:34

Love Alan Cumming though. Looking forward to that one. Also hoping Nan comes back somehow, now she would've made a good Doctor.

steppemum · 09/10/2018 10:03

umm, you do know that it is supposed to be a programme for kids not adults?

On the basis of that, my 13 and 10m year old loved it, so I think it hit the mark.

I don't think JW acted badly. As my 13 year old said - she really was The Doctor. I liked it, and liked the way she did the whole slightly manic until she has regenerated thing.

As to the stereotype clothes shopping, the person standing outside with arms full of clothes was a woman.

CountFosco · 09/10/2018 12:59

Doctor - Adult Female Alien, bring it on!

LOL

Loved Tim Shaw, I'm still giggling over that. My DDs are 9 &10, they dressed up as Doctor Who Tardis to watch the first episode and both loved it so we're very excited here.

First episodes are always establishing the team and the new actor referencing previous doctors while their personality settles. 'Rose' was slightly difference series starter because there was nothing to suggest that the Doctor had only just regenerated. The choosing clothes scene always happens as well, no gender cliche there.

We watched a Matt Smith episode last night (Dinosaurs on a Spaceship) and DD1 found it completely confusing. Whereas the more I rewatch Matt Smith's episodes the more I love him, but I like a complex story arc.

I cheered out loud when one of the characters was described as dyspraxic. I am dyspraxic as is my son so it was great to see it getting an outing on Doctor Who. And he wasn’t a useless clumsy person either....he just struggled to ride a bike. I’ve never been able to learn that balance.
Loved it when he thre the bike over the edge of the hill, my son would have done the same.

Loved Jodie, some of her dialogue felt a bit forced but then she’s playing a traditionally male role so it’s goung to take time to settle down.
Bradley Walsh seemed to be channelling his inner Bernard Cribbins, liked him too.

Loads of potential and can’t wait to see more episodes.

AlevelConfusion · 09/10/2018 14:14

Very sorry Nan wasn't one of the companions, she was fab.
Yes she was the best one on it Tardis

SoupDragon · 09/10/2018 14:21

And he wasn’t a useless clumsy person either....he just struggled to ride a bike.

I can’t help but suspect he is going to be repeatedly clumsy throughout the series though.

havingabadhairday · 09/10/2018 14:23

Loved it, loved her, looking forward to the rest of the series :)

BearsDontDigOnDancing · 09/10/2018 21:40

YES! I said to Dh, BW is playing a granddad how you would have wanted Donna's granddad to be, you know, a fair few years younger and more able to go on adventures. There was something very Bernard Cribbins about him in his portrayal.

We really enjoyed it, loved Jodie, loved the story line (felt very reminiscent of the fist episode in the reboot, where the Dr does not appear for while). I cried over the Granddad getting killed after being on the phone to his GD Daisy.

Had funny moments too.

All in, very positive.

SoupDragon · 09/10/2018 22:43

Bernard Cribbins is a far far better actor than Bradley Walsh. There’s no comparison in my book.

mogloveseggs · 09/10/2018 22:45

Massive thumbs up from everyone here at chez mog.
Lots of squealing and peeping through fingers at the gross teeth alien but no nightmares followed.
Can’t wait for next week!

BearsDontDigOnDancing · 09/10/2018 22:49

Oh I was not enthused about Bradley Walsh at all when he was announced, but it did feel like he was at the very least taking inspiration from the other "granddad" who has been in DW and acting like a younger more able to flit about version of Bernard Cribbins portrayal.

I so wanted Donna's Granddad to go on a few trips with them at the time. I loved him.

Badmoonsarising · 09/10/2018 23:59

Just watched with some teenagers. Enjoyed it and thought JW made a good beginning.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 10/10/2018 08:57

The character whonis dyspraxic will be repeatedly clumsy throughout the series if it’s true to the condition. Or he may just be uncoordinated in other ways.
I liked that although they mentioned it they showed him just getting in with life which is what we do. I must confess to never buying expensive plates and glasses though. Grin

NC4Now · 10/10/2018 11:13

I wonder if they will show the other stuff with dyspraxia- the disorganisation etc or if it will all focus on gross motor skills?

SneakyGremlins · 10/10/2018 11:31

Delores Aldi plates here Grin

TheSteakBakeOfAwesome · 10/10/2018 11:38

The finest Tesco always have them in stock to replace broken ones in this house - but the kids still use melamine cutlery with cartoon character of the day on (mainly as DH is shit with portion sizes and it stops him going overboard).

TheThirdOfHerName · 10/10/2018 15:10

I have dyspraxia and three of my four children have it to some degree.

DS1: organisation and sense of direction are affected.
DS2: motor skills & coordination are affected.
DD: all of the above (bless her).

So only two of my teenage children can ride a bike. The same two can tie their shoelaces.

We have supermarket own-brand crockery and glassware, which we buy in bulk so we can quickly and easily replace broken items.

I drive an automatic second-hand car; it's one of the smallest cars on the market which makes it easier for me to park, and my husband installed rear parking sensors. I then use an app to find my way back to where I parked it.

NC4Now · 11/10/2018 20:04

We’re posh. Our plates are from Ikea.
