The Guardian comment about contemporary clothing lends credence to the theory it’s a take on Romeo and Juliet. Still feels like a bit of a stretch but I’ve wracked my brains to try and find any other major storyline that it could be based on.

LostInShoebiz · 23/09/2018 15:56

If he wakes up on the train and it’s all been a dream I WILL RIOT.

Ooh yes, good point it's the Evening Standard though, sorry, I'm a terrible pedant

buttybuttybutthole · 23/09/2018 16:12

I think it's more simple. I think the clue from episode 1 is Budd and his vet friends pact to kill government ministers if they ever met them. It was budds plan all along but he accidentally fell for her and got entwined in her life, all mixed up by his mental health issues and doubts and conscience. All orchestrated by the train scenario which they set up to get near to Julia- David Has spent the past episodes trying to worm his way out of his hole , even deceiving the viewers.

A simple plot with complicated characters and relationships - the best story Smile

DarlingNikita · 23/09/2018 16:19

Interesting!

But he would have had to be pretty confident that him being the hero on the train would a) work and b) lead to him being given tee job of being Julia's PPO.

DuggeesWoggle · 23/09/2018 16:23

I have missed out on these threads as I didn't start watching til the other week so have only just caught up on iPlayer.

Why is he called SlashDave?

DarlingNikita · 23/09/2018 16:25

Because the Home Sec asked if he preferred Dave or David and he said 'I answer to both,' so she said, 'OK, then, David-slash-Dave.'

Mrsmadevans · 23/09/2018 16:25

I a wondering if it is anything to do with Slash saying to Nadia 'you've been brainwashed, so has your husband'

DarlingNikita · 23/09/2018 16:32

Mrsmadevans, in what way?

KnotsInMay · 23/09/2018 16:34

“but I think it's worth considering other possible reasons for her being so prominent. “
She identified ‘Longcross’ .

DarlingNikita · 23/09/2018 16:35

Yes good point!

Mrsmadevans · 23/09/2018 16:35

I am wondering if he has been brainwashed as well and if he is the fall guy for the govt to get rid of Julia. I really haven't got a clue but what he said resonate with me.

DarlingNikita · 23/09/2018 16:45

brainwashed by whom?

TimeIhadaNameChange · 23/09/2018 16:57

I was wondering if the contemporary clothes bit was a hint back to R and J. In a way they belonged to warring families (politicians vs soldiers) and her name could be the implausible coincidence. Her fake suicide could be her way of getting RIPA passed and getting /Dave to realise his feeling for her.

Alternatively, how plausible is it that there were so many high-ranking women involved at the start? Not only did we have Julia and the two high-ranking police, the most senior firearms person was female, and I think there was maybe another somewhere, as well. It was remarked on at the time, both here and in the press, but nothing since.

Thighofrelief · 23/09/2018 17:19

Oooh brainwashed! As in Manchurian Candidate / Jason Bourne - Slash is a sleeper waiting to be weaponised!

Mrs Jihadi and Slash could have met in Afghanistan.

I can't cope if it's a dream sequence, I've only just put my life back together after Bobby/Dallas/Shower scene.

VanGoghsDog · 23/09/2018 17:30

It's not at all implausible that there are that number of women in high level roles and that would be a nonsense premise for the show to be relying on. Hmm

Slash may be acting in a fugue state to some extent. I can't see how him getting Nadia arrested could be part of a plot by him though?

TippetyTapWriter · 23/09/2018 17:32

The way he greeted Nadia in her own language, is that something a normal soldier would have been taught?

sofato5miles · 23/09/2018 17:37

@tippetytap it's the standard hello

LostInShoebiz · 23/09/2018 17:41

Yeah, pretty common.

Thighofrelief · 23/09/2018 17:44

Soldiers would be taught and would pick up basic language skills.

Thighofrelief · 23/09/2018 17:46

I think Slash is involved in something long term which is why Vicky has separated from him. He has changed too much during Afghanistan.

KnotsInMay · 23/09/2018 17:47

Tippety: he said ‘ a salaam alaikum’ which is Arabic and the global greeting amongst Muslims. It means ‘peace be upon you’

He would have heard it as commonplace in Afghanistan, (and any semi competent police officer in his position based in London or multi-cultural metropolis would know it as a greeting) and he used it as an opener to establish the bond of trust that he made the basis of his negotiation.

It doesn’t mean he is an Islamist terrorist insider.

Thighofrelief · 23/09/2018 17:49

He does seem to be very familiar with Nadia in the interview but didn't seem to be in the train toilet. May have to rewatch episode 1.

DarlingNikita · 23/09/2018 17:58

He does seem to be very familiar with Nadia in the interview but didn't seem to be in the train toilet.

I think he's equally 'familiar' in both situations, and that's not very – he's polite in greeting her in Arabic, and then kind if patronising with the 'You're doing really well' encouragements.

sofato5miles · 23/09/2018 18:23

Right, have researched ep1.

Chanel/Sam and driver/soldier/ organised crime bandit have an odd exchange after she tries to sell her story. He says "Do you want to do something? Shall I call someone? Open invitation".

Next scene he is at Scarface's group where SlashDave lurks in the corridor.

Is he activating Scarface?
