Apparently she called Charley the N word in a 'joking manner' whilst they were dancing and was chucked out at 3 in the morning.

Stupid, silly naive girl

TaylorsMummy · 08/06/2007 10:07

sorry Taylors mummy, what is behind the suprise that my son has been exposed to the word? I'm hardly responsible for words that he has picked up at school, because other parents may not be quite as respectful as myself. My apologies that I live in a shitty area where other people let their children away with that sort of language.

LieselVentouse · 08/06/2007 10:15

That is what this thread is all about and it wasnt directed at anyone.

milkchocolate · 08/06/2007 10:16

This thread, and this issue is very interesting.
On the one hand you have a word which historically is so bad it really shouldnt be used by anyone. On the other hand the same word is used by SOME people but not others, and it is those who uses it who decides who can acceptably use it? And I am sure that is why many others are confused, and uses it through ignorance.

Surely, if the word is in use, can you really blame somebody else for using it? And if you personally dont use this word, but you know many others do, should you be angry with the person who did? Who are you to decide who can or cannot use the word? My point is, if you use a word, you have no right to actually dictate that others cant. You cannot expect anybody to NOT use a word that is so frequently in use anyway. Is that also discrimination? The reason why we have people using the N word is that it is actually in use, by the same people who take offence to its use! Having said this, I think only truly misguided and silly people will fail to understand they should not use it, even if it is used by others.

Now, I am white, I will not profess to have many black friends, I dont (I have known one or two, and i have had some interesting discussion with one who said that he indiscriminately hated all white people and rather see me dead because of the slave trade, so I understand this is a very serious and deep rooted issue) but I am against any form of racism or racist remark made against anybody.

In my opinion it is totally without class, without dignity to ever lower oneself to use remarks such as "n...r", "b..ch", "c..t", "p..i" as they are derogatory. It surprises me when a person such as Emily, who is upper middle class, uses such a word, it is totally ignorant, totally unacceptable, people of any class should refrain from taking such words in their mouths, it is foul. Most people I have come across from upper middle class and above have been most educated, but more importantly well brought up, and knows not to EVER make a point about their own standing, their own class, and the "branding of other".

Sorry for rambling. This thread has kept me captivated for more than an hour, and my kids are playing with 50 odd birthday balloons from yesterday. And now that I have added my pennys worth, I will go away, because I am sure there will be somebody who will find a way of being disgusted with what I say, and totally misinterpret.

LieselVentouse · 08/06/2007 10:17

Taylorsmummy youre making too many assumptions that people on this thread are racist. This is a discussion about a disgusting word which everybody on here will agree with

TaylorsMummy · 08/06/2007 10:18

i just find it disgusting that seven year olds in glasgow (who i'm assuming are white or maybe asian)are using that word and are calling a teacher that!!

not your fault if he's picked it up from school but truly disgusted.

Enid · 08/06/2007 10:21

What word?

LieselVentouse · 08/06/2007 10:21

Im sure there are lots of 7 yr olds everywhere using that word - not the fault of their parents necessarily

TaylorsMummy · 08/06/2007 10:24

god, that's really disturbing.what hope is there if kids are being brought up like that?

Bananaknickers · 08/06/2007 10:24

at this comment on Fri 08-Jun-07 10:04:33 by Taylorsmummy. Is this the way forward to educate and reduce racsium?

plummymummy · 08/06/2007 10:25

I have referred to it as the N word because it offends many mnetters and as it is so easily avoided it is no problem to make the adjustment out of respect to people on this thread who have clearly been very upset by it's use.

Oncebitten · 08/06/2007 10:30

During slavery times, black people were treated worse than animals, it was not that long ago, sorry that we haven't got over it yet. School history lessons should cover this but unfortunately they don't.

As for african amercian people using that word, after being called something, having it beaten into you for long enough, you can start to believe it. Martin Luther King, certainly didn't dream of that in his day. Infact many of the black leaders who fought so hard for change would turn in their graves to know that this was going on.

It is wrong no matter who says it, but that doesn't mean that's ok. To avoid the word may seem childish to you Kerry's mum but better to be treated like a child than an animal.

TaylorsMummy · 08/06/2007 10:33

oncebitten, you speak a lot of sense

plummymummy · 08/06/2007 10:34

As an aside - I have often wondered why British history is still taught in such an imperialist way. I heard it is getting better, but how much better I don't know. I am of Irish descent (3 irish grandparents, Irish dad) and learned nothing about Irish history even though the Irish were oppressed by the British. Equally - nothing about slavery.
