Apparently she called Charley the N word in a 'joking manner' whilst they were dancing and was chucked out at 3 in the morning.

Stupid, silly naive girl

The thing I don't understand is if Nigger is such an offensive word to black people then why do they choose to adress each other by using that word as a friendly term??

Surely if it is so awful and degrading to them then they wouldn't say it either.

By them using it as a greeting to each other and using it in mainstream rap music ect - that many many young people listen to these days tthen i think themselves are making it acceptable and more commonly used!

There are many offensive words for many different cultures and communities around the world but the communities don't choose to use the terms within themselves!!

Bananaknickers · 08/06/2007 08:47

kitty I agree with that too. we said that last night after watching it

sparklygothkat · 08/06/2007 08:50

kitty I agree. My DS has Cerebral palsy but doesn't greet his disabled pals with 'hi spaz' (for everyone's attention I hate that word mysself and would never use it normally, jut want to make a point)

plummymummy · 08/06/2007 08:56

If you look at the thread further back you may find some explanations for use of the word by the black community - to do with reclaiming a word and giving it a different meaning to on some level emancipate people from the awful effects of slavery. I don't think many people are naive enough to think it is ok for a white person to use it merely because it is used within the black community.

Does anyone else think that her reaction to her eviction was a bit odd. For someone who has been so petulant about other things she seems surprisingly accepting. It was like she knew already - it reminded me of Jade's "apology" and Shilpa's "acceptance".

hatwoman · 08/06/2007 09:08

aside from Emily and her intentions/stpuidly etc, is anyone else HIGHLY sceptical of C4/endemol (or whatever they're called?). first - why ON EARTH did they have to wake her up and kick her out at 3 am? second if their rules (as BB said in the diary room) include that you mustn't say stuff that might be offensive to the housemates OR the audience - and they pretty much indicated she was being chucked out for the latter, how come it's ok for them to broadcast it? if the problem was about causing offence to the audiences then there was a very obvious way in which they could have mitigated that. enormous double standards, enormous strategic game playing in light of last year, about nothing more than ratings imo.

Pennies · 08/06/2007 09:13

Well I wondered that too. I put it down to two things:

Either

  1. C4 Endemol were buying time to think about what to do in place of an ejection tomorrow

Or
2) I think that they took the decision was taken so late because Niky and Charlie were up and discussing it - both showing confusion and some degree of upset at the incident that they decided to get rid of her there and then.

Bananaknickers · 08/06/2007 09:17

I was shocked that all the girls chased Ziggy the other night to get his swimming trunks of. They chased him for ages and wouldn't stop. Can't begin to imagine the uproar if it had been a lots of men ganging up to get a girls knickers off. I think this show is coming to an end really.

Bananaknickers · 08/06/2007 09:17

off meant to be

LieselVentouse · 08/06/2007 09:32

Ive heard a lot of people on here use the term "jocks" and even "sweaty socks" on here to describe people north of border - is that not offfensive?

Mindles · 08/06/2007 09:34

I have been vaguely thinking that she wanted to go - it's the only answer I can see. There is no way she didn't realise there would be uproar if she said what she did. She must have known she'd be thrown out for something like that.

Mindles · 08/06/2007 09:35

Bananaknickers yes I thought that too - was quite unimpressed by that particular behaviour and as you say it wouldn't go the other way.

persephonesnape · 08/06/2007 09:41

of course it's offensive, but there isn't the same history as slavery - although the highland clearances and general attitude of the english towards the scots pre act of union may have some parallels.

I weas thinking of irish people actually - in victorian times depicted as simian with pigs tucked under an arm etc, but the term 'paddy' isn't seen as offensive as n**r.

i think the 'reclamation' of the word has caused a lot of difficulties. We don't live in a very ethnically diverse area. in glasgow we have quite a robust asian community, not as high in afro/carribean. my seven year old son had a black supply teacher and allegedly ( accordijng to his sister who is always trying to cause trouble for him...) refered to her as a n**r. I explained why that wasn't appropriate and please, not to use that term again, even if black people aren't around and he had difficulty grasping that it's ok for someone of a particular skin colour to use a word, but not someone else. then he is seven. you would have thought a 19 year old would grasp the notion.

TaylorsMummy · 08/06/2007 09:45

i'm surprised your seven year old has been exposed to the word tbh there are quite a few mixed race kids in my family and my friends and we live in london.none of them would even know that word

plummymummy · 08/06/2007 09:46

Agree

plummymummy · 08/06/2007 09:48

As in agree that you would expect a 19 yr old to know more about prejudice than a 7 yr old.

plummymummy · 08/06/2007 09:50

I think people are missing the point a bit when they say "isn't pikey offensive too" etc etc. This thread is about the N word. I'm sure most people who object to that word also object to other pejorative terms used to define a cultural group but if you want to find out, maybe start another thread?

allmytimeonmumsnet · 08/06/2007 09:53

Don't you think they removed her then so it could be done discretly. I mean wasn't there a big crowd with lots of shouting in the last series. Maybe they were worried about security. Also it was obviously growing in impact as the rumour started to spread through the house. Maybe they worried how the other housemates would react when they got wind of it.

I don't think emily MEANT to be racist but unfortunatly she was and so must face the consequences. What I find worrying is the circle of friends she must move in. If her friends use the term all the time then doesn't that mean she moves in very racist circles, even if she doesn't realise they are racist.

I didn't feel sorry for her as she didn't seem apologetic at all - just upset at her missed opportunity for stardom.

I did really feel for Charley though. She seemed to keep making excuses for Emily and almost seemed to try to justify it to herself. She clearly couldn't contain herself, it was really playing on her mind. She tried to chat to Shadnap (or whatever she's called) and it backfired because S then tried to confront Emily and poor Charley was clearly cringing and trying to play the whole thing down. She knew just how bad the situation was for emily. However she also seemed really shocked that emily had used the word and although she kept saying it was OK she was clearly so upset. I don't like C very much but I really felt it was to her credit the way she of all people tried to protect Emily from the backlash.

Do any of you remember Big Ron's infamous gaff on tv where he called Marcel Desailly (sp?)a lazy fucking N? Some of the black footballers he had helped early in their careers came to his defence. These things are so complex.

TaylorsMummy · 08/06/2007 09:58

emily is a mug.how she thinks using that word is normal i don't know.she's from bristol fgs,she says she's got black mates, yeah, right i live in london, the majority of my mates and our kids are black or mixed and that word is not said EVER.she is a stupid little cow and watching her in the diary room i sat and laughed.dim is an understatement.

TaylorsMummy · 08/06/2007 09:59

kerrymum, are you white? i just can't get my head round white people even typing that word
