They could sell a lot of their stuff-sell 5 games consoles for a start and pay off some of the debt. The expensive foundation and cheap makeup on top was a good idea. The nails were ridiculous. Those girls should have been told to get a paper round and pay for their own bloody nails and makeup instead of getting the dad to do another thing!

Watched this one this morning. I'm not sure the mother in the family wanted to change. She just seemed so delusional about what was essential and what were luxuries with no appreciation about lots of seemingly small spends added up.

Her guesses about how much she'd spent on shoes/handbags etc showed she had no concept of money - the shoes guess would only have worked if her shoes cost £10 a pair, when clearly she's probably never seen a £10 pair of shoes in her life.

Her DHs efforts were commendable and the nails thing was genius to be honest, although maybe the mother and daughters should have been the ones to learn how to do each others nails. It must have been so gaulling for him to give up his police job only see his efforts thwarted by the family's continual overspending.

Hopefully they'll pay their debt off, manage their money better and he can get back into the police if that's what he wants to do.

Interesting about the wine glasses though. I'm perfectly happy with Ikea's quid a go or less offering and honestly can't see how branded 'quality' ones are worth the extra money, but it seemed there was no consensus about which were the expensive and cheap ones, so I don't understand why people would pay £37 for a single wine glass that people, when not seeing the price, thing feels 'cheap' Confused.

SussexBonfireViking · 14/09/2018 10:45

if she works for an airline, surely she would be buying the label stuff abroad, and getting them a lot cheaper?

i used to work for an airline, and i have a lots of 'designer gear' including a Ralph Lauren dress i paid less than $15 for, and i buy some stuff from charities as well

My Jo Malone collection looks like a lot, but my 2 bottles of 90ml English Oak and Redcurrant/Hazelnut came free with the 2 bottles i bought for £47 each - yes £94 is a lot, but they would have priced them at £274

SussexBonfireViking · 14/09/2018 10:46

re wine glasses - i wouldnt spend £37 (my good ones are max around £7/10 each), but i find cheaper glasses are thicker, and i dont like that

mrsoutnumbered · 14/09/2018 11:40

I don't seem to be able to own wine glasses without smashing them so always get the cheap and cheerful ones!

LemonBreeland · 14/09/2018 15:51

I agree that although she said that she wanted her husband to know that he wasn't the only one who was making sacrifices to pay off the debt, she didn't really show it in her actions.

She seemed to be happy to buy cheaper household products in future, but was less happy when it came to personal items for her looks, which will be things she is spending money on daily/weekly. Unlike the household items which have already been purchased and won't need replacing for a while.

Does anyone know what the incentive is for the families that take part in this show?

A lot of the advice is blindingly obvious. I just can't see why anyone would go on a tv show to bemoan their lack of money, knowing full well that it's because they buy things that they can't afford.

Do they get paid to be on the show?

WeAreSailing · 14/09/2018 16:53

15 minute fame syndrome I reckon even if it does make you look like twats Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/09/2018 09:47

Just watching now

They said House was under budget then got to the kitchen. So did they go over budget and forget the kitchen - and eeeek £20k on cards. A loan would have been cheaper

Nails. I like to have mine done every 3w. It’s £20 but guess if really poor I wouldn’t have then done ...... or I would do overtime 😂😂

Love nice nails but yes silly teenagers having gels

The amount of shoes. Omg. Let alone the huge TVs and console

Tho agree if they have brought the products then a mop isn’t going to help If have a steam cleaner

I missed why the dad gave up the police - unless haven’t said yet. About 30mins in

Oh and wine glasses

I break glasses. Insane to spend that amount on them

I have lovely £1 from Asda and easily replaced

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/09/2018 09:48

Oh oh oh. I have that £54 vacuum :)

And yes what do they get for being on the show

Must be paid

Atlantea · 15/09/2018 10:01

He gave up the police as they couldn't afford it on their wages

Also I think the point is more for when they replace damaged and broken stuff they can see that they don't have to replace with expensive brands as cheaper things work just as well

topcat2014 · 15/09/2018 21:05

Alex earns around £500k, so she can afford the coat :)

raisedbyguineapigs · 16/09/2018 12:03

Exactly. The programme isn't about people buying expensive stuff. It's about people buying expensive stuff when they can't afford it.

eelbecomingforyou · 16/09/2018 17:50

Why on earth not teach the women all to do each other’s nails? Why rope in the poor dad to do it?

And what did the £53 per week spending money cover?

Insane addiction to nails. Especially for teen dd with bitten nails!

If people are so daft that they just buy expensive stuff for the sake of it, then more fool them. They couldn’t even open the lid of the fugly Smeg kettle!

CurbsideProphet · 17/09/2018 08:31

We watched the two most recent episodes this weekend. I couldn't believe the lack of saving or thoughts for the future. Imagine if one of them was made redundant or on long term sick leave? Absolute madness.

I get gel nails done several times a year as a treat. The rest of the time I paint them myself and it takes about 45mins. I couldn't understand why Steph and Alex weren't suggesting that the mum and daughters do each other's nails as a "low cost bonding activity", as that's what they're usually trying to encourage Hmm

I wonder if there will ever be plans for a series of "revisited" episodes?!

CurlsandCurves · 17/09/2018 09:28

Lots of swearing, and it’s about EWFL, but if you were wondering why people go on these shows, Micky Flanagan thinks he knows...

The80sweregreat · 19/09/2018 06:21

I hate these shows and i have a feeling that its all to just get on the TV.

Nettletheelf · 19/09/2018 20:07

If the woman on tonight’s show says “obviously” JUST ONE MORE TIME I won’t be answerable for my actions.

Particularly when the consequences she is talking about are not obvious.

Nettletheelf · 19/09/2018 20:08

Eg “we got credit cards so OBVIOUSLY we had to sell the house”

“OBVIOUSLY we lost our jobs”

Elderflower14 · 19/09/2018 20:09

I can't believe this family!!!

LightastheBreeze · 19/09/2018 20:13

That rented house is surely bigger than they need.

Elderflower14 · 19/09/2018 20:14

30,000 on holidays?? 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄

CoffeeShortbread · 19/09/2018 20:15

How did they do Eurodisney & 2 weeks in the Italian Lakes for 5 people for £3k?!

Nettletheelf · 19/09/2018 20:16

What makes me laugh is, when the people who appear on the show are told how much their purchases are ‘worth’ (actually what they spent, second hand it’s ‘worth’ sod all), their stupid little faces light up with pride. They all do it. You can read their minds, almost. They are all thinking, “ooh, now our neighbours will know that we’ve got lots of expensive stuff and will be jealous!”.

Fuckwits.
