Also, when it was gently suggested (by Alex I think) that redundancy could strike again, the lady just seemed to ignore that point. She seemed pleased just to point out that they had less debt on their credit cards now, so they were better off. But they still have no safety net in case the worse happens. I wouldn't enjoy my holidays if I was worrying about money all the time!

LemonBreeland · 20/09/2018 09:07

I don't understand why loads of holidays was more important than having their own house. Have one holiday a year at her parents villa, which is more than most who are trying to save would get, and save properly.

Another Dad who thought he was 'snazzy' and liked a brand. Essentially a middle aged man in middle aged man uniform of polo shirt and jeans. No one cares about the label on your polo shirt it doesn't make the outfit look any better.

CurlsandCurves · 20/09/2018 09:15

They wanted to raise £40 k deposit, but spend £30k a year on holidays.

Just don’t go on any holidays for a year, then you’ve only got £10k left to find, simple!

Argh.

CoffeeShortbread · 20/09/2018 09:37

The thing about rent vs mortgage was a bit annoying. I’ll admit that I was quite surprised that generally mortgages are more expensive than rents (basing it on a 10% deposit) these days BUT it completely ignored the fact that you are paying towards an actual asset that it in the long term you will be better off (generally speaking, market forces permitting). A loan that will eventually be paid off and you will own the building, meaning that you won’t be left wondering how you’ll pay your rent in retirement or older age. That was totally glossed over in favour of the bald short term monthly outgoings.

Again, was there any talk about income protection insurance or savings? I know this is primarily a programme about shopping, so broader financial planning probably isn’t ‘on topic’ but it would definitely be valuable to the viewers as well as the families on the progs.

I agree, the Alvin Hall programme was much better. Less consumerist than this one. This is more ‘entertainment’ and allowing the viewer to feel smug that they aren’t such a useless bag of dicks than focused on long term help for the families involved.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/09/2018 10:00

Why are people so obsessed with kettles? 🤷‍♀️

Missushb · 20/09/2018 13:12

The Alvin Hall one was great. I watched it a few weeks ago actually on You Tube! It was more interesting, how he went in to the psychology behind spending. Great show and he was brilliant

Nettletheelf · 20/09/2018 13:44

Here is why they are obsessed with kettles. They all want to present themselves as people of taste and discernment. Because they think that having the right kettle (or fridge, or polo shirt, or car) speaks volumes about their innate style, intelligence and judgment. They are terrified that people won’t see the ‘real them’, or at least the self-image they have created. It is tragic.

The last series featured a couple who had spent a mint on kitchen appliances because they were ‘really into design’. The husband, a real mediocrity, had decided that the way to look special and discerning was to adopt this pathetic ‘really into design’ pose.

Whenever he said on camera, “I’m really into design” he’d do a special smile and nod his head slightly. DH and I were in stitches.

The ‘really into design’ thing translated, rather mundanely, into buying particular appliance brands. They said that they would only consider a KitchenAid mixer because they were “really into design” (smile, head nod) and would know good design immediately. In the blind test they liked the Argos one best, HAHAHAHA.

They were a fantastic example of the rather pathetic behaviour exhibited by everybody who appears on this show.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/09/2018 19:28

So 8yrs ago they lost their jobs yet also decided to have a third child

A bit like rich house poor house - those poor usually had a child they couldn’t afford

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/09/2018 20:26

And yes I would have downsized to a 2 bed house - boys can share a bedroom for a year or so and save serious money rentwise

It looked a lovely 4bed house

ALso look at 95% mortgages - they do exist - so less to save and yes the monthly mortgage would be more - but over time they can remortgage and cut down

olderthanyouthink · 20/09/2018 20:51

That sound like twats, our children couldn't possibly share a room (but they do anyway Hmm), our children couldn't possibly have less than 3 holidays a year, I couldn't possibly live without a speaker that listens to everything I say...

Also white canvas converse are a bad idea, at least get leather (on sale) lasts faaaaar longer

JeezYouLoon · 20/09/2018 22:43

Alvin Hall was brilliant, loved his programme.

My favourite was the couple who were up to their eyeballs in debt but decided not to change their jobs to better pay as 'they'd pay too much tax' 🤦🏻‍♀️

onemouseplace · 20/09/2018 22:51

Loved Alvin Hall, I still have a copy of "Your Money or Your Life" somewhere. I can even hear his accent in my head now.

shutlingsloe · 20/09/2018 22:57

He had a fabulous laugh too! Smile

mrswhiplington · 21/09/2018 10:28

I also loved Alvin Hall. We should start a "Bring back Alvin" thread.Smile

Couldn't understand the logic of the couple when asked would they move to a 3 bed house. The wife said that by the time they had saved for a deposit the older one would have left home anyway. Surely that means the younger boys would still have their own rooms! She said the younger one was always sharing with the others. Makes no sense.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 21/09/2018 17:00

I will happily sign the petition to get Alvin Hall back on tv where he belongs!

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/09/2018 11:10

Just caught up with the previous two episodes. Where do they find these idiots?

If someone is well off and wants to waste money on wallpaper that costs some ridiculous price a roll or a handbag that doesn't look any better than cheaper ones fine that is up to them but people that aren't well off and spend silly money are just pathetic.

I felt a bit sorry for the guy that had to leave the police to do a job that paid better. Yes he was a spender but his wife was far worse. She really annoyed me. She HAD to have her nails done! No, sorry, she didn't have to.

Also why do they all have to have such expensive toasters, kettles etc? A toaster toasts bread, a kettle boils water. Not much difference, if any, whether they cost £10 or £100.

DH a few years ago bought a Smeg toaster which cost something like £90. It looked great but I was furious that he had wasted that much money. It worked fine but no better than the toaster we had beforehand which cost around £10. It broke after about 8 months and we replaced it with a £12 toaster which we are still using!

The second couple were just plain stupid. They never saved a penny when they were earning well. They spent a fortune on holidays even though they supposedly desperately wanted to buy a house. Whats wrong with 1 cheaper holiday a year? Some families can't even afford a holiday.

Why can't their children share a room? She acted like it would be the end of the world. Get over yourself woman. I shared a room with my 2 sisters until I left home at 23. Never did me any harm

CoffeeShortbread · 26/09/2018 16:18

Is there an episode tonight? I’m sure my sky info thing said last week’s was 4/4.

FleeBee · 26/09/2018 16:57

It's showing as meet the sheriffs on my planner for tonight at 8pm 😫😫

flowerythorns · 26/09/2018 18:47

The interesting thing with the renters was that they were honest in prioritising lifestyle over long term housing.

I don't agree with their thinking at all, but I could see it from their point of view.

They felt it was so far out of reach that it wasn't worth long term sacrifice.

I feel it's like the message we all had a few years ago that if we all stopped buying takeaway coffee then we'd suddenly have more money Hmm

willowpillow · 26/09/2018 19:05

It seems like almost every episode there is a middle age dad who is really into expensive trainers, and he could never lower his standards to wearing cheaper trainers.

topcat2014 · 26/09/2018 20:10

@willowpillow I agree, a little tragic, don't you think.

I have size 11 feet and look crap in trainers unless in full gym kit

mydogisthebest · 27/09/2018 06:58

Does anyone know when the bedding set shown with the birds on is from?

WeAreSailing · 27/09/2018 07:46

Was it on last night?
