I think, if you're extremely photosensitive, you can get sunburnt by forgetting to top up your factor 50 on time, or after a swim, or applying 30 instead of 50 because it's closer to hand. He could be doing the right thing 90% of the time but the odd slip would be enough to induce redness. The fact that there's no blistering or peeling suggests it's not that bad, given how long he's been out there. I don't think it says anything about how well he can look after a patient in the emergency room really.

Thank goodness it was before the internet was king and very early on in the genre, so we had no idea what we were letting ourselves in for. I did read some very hurtful comments in newspapers though. I didn't cope well with it at all and can still quote most of the worst stuff verbatim decades later!

I think that's why I tend to try and be kinder and less judgey. I know from experience how hard it is and how editing can totally change something.

That's not true, if you have significant sunburn no amount of aftersun will stop blistering and peeling.

It's really easy, a lot easier than you'd think probably, to burn when you're extremely photosensitive. That's all I'm saying. I don't think it's a significant character failing and I doubt it impairs his ability to care for and advise patients.
