I’ve just heard that this will start in the US at the end of this month but Channel 4 haven’t said when they’ll start showing it yet.

"Slightly longer leash"

Yes! And she's very much on Nicks leash, and nobody knows what his game is.

Nick is an Eye
Nick is in Mayday

If he's a double agent one of those statements is false. Which side is being played by him?

hopelesslydevotedtoGu · 31/05/2018 07:09

The part where he lets her have to keys so she can drive off, rescue her daughter and escape to Canada was to show the utter futility of her new “freedom” in respect to anything that is important to her. That dawns on June very quickly.

That's interesting, I took the opposite interpretation, that he had handed over his keys and let her make her own decision even if reckless, because he respected her right to autonomy. I can see your interpretation too now. I love when this show is ambiguous and leaves you uncertain.

kalapattar · 31/05/2018 08:12

I just wish she had some kind of protection such as a gun if she is being left by herself.

It does beg the question about what she would do if she was found by Gilead and was going to be recaptured.

With a weapon, she has a number of choices - including the choice not to be captured.

But she still has a husband and a daughter to live for.

boatyardblues · 31/05/2018 08:15

There’s a gantry full of noodes and plenty of high places to jump grom in that printing press room. Nick must be pretty confident she won’t top herself. Or confident those offices won’t be raided... 🤔

noblegiraffe · 31/05/2018 10:25

It was the first time that June and Nick had sex since she got pregnant, wasn’t it?
The first time in years that June had sex that wasn’t at all, even in the slightest bit about getting pregnant.

I saw it as like she was in the shower, trying to vigorously scrub off all the traces of the other sex. It wasn’t a happy act, more a compulsion.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 31/05/2018 10:39

Yes I think so too noble

Thanks for nick info cru. Something in my head told me he was English. I’ve seen cold mountain but can’t remember his part. Will google him properly later.

WitchSharkadder · 31/05/2018 11:47

Yes, I got the Rachel & Leah connection to THT, it was only the original group/cult/whatever you want to call them being called the Sons of Jacob that the penny dropped for Grin

I interpreted Nick giving June the keys the same way as you, Hopelessly, but Lapsed, your version makes more sense to me. I love reading all your different views and thoughts, lots of food for thought.

BG2015 · 31/05/2018 17:38

Luke (June's husband) is also British!

Cherrypi · 31/05/2018 18:16

Yes he was in Hollyoaks.

ScoobyGangMember · 31/05/2018 18:21

Bit of a step up for him. Doesn't get to do much though.

Dancingmonkey87 · 31/05/2018 20:03

Who did he play in hollyoaks

Aridane · 31/05/2018 20:35

Apparently he played a James Walker in an episode of Hollyoaks in 2004

My mum is friends with Max Minghella's aunt. The family make ice-cream!

I'm finding it horrific and gripping.

paradyning · 01/06/2018 05:46

His Dad is the Minghella of the English Patient fame

KitKat1985 · 01/06/2018 08:49

Moving the topic on slightly. Does anyone have any theories as to how they think the series will eventually end?

I'd love to see a huge Mayday-led revolt and the over-throwing of the Gilead regime, but not sure how realistic it is. Also would love to see the Handmaids being given their chance to over-throw Aunt Lydia.

brokenshoes · 01/06/2018 09:28

It's been a while since I read the book, but I think the end notes symposium suggest that Gilead was around for quite a long time.

A third series has been commissioned as well, I believe.

KitKat1985 · 01/06/2018 09:54

Yeah I've got a horrible feeling Gilead may be around for some time. As you say Brokenshoes I believe in the end notes in the books Gilead was around for a long time, and we are obviously just pretty near the start of the Gilead regime (I think it's supposed to be a few years into the regime at most in series 2) so wonder where they can take this series.

The first series was pretty faithful to the first book so I knew where the plot-line was going in the TV series, but this time around I'm not sure yet exactly what the series is working up to. Obviously at some point though June will have to give birth.

KitKat1985 · 01/06/2018 09:55

Although in many ways I'm happy Gilead may be around for a while yet as this is the best TV I've seen in years. Grin

HollyGibney · 01/06/2018 14:41

I'm late to the table with this series. For some reason I watched the first episode and then lost interest. When I saw season 2 was coming, I tried and again and it's just brilliant, it's competing with GOT for my favourite ever series at the moment, so just wanted to join the thread.

FloralCup · 01/06/2018 14:52

I think there will be some kind of freedom for June at the end of this series - otherwise it'll feel like a never ending story (it's a depressing yet compelling series to watch but one can only take so much torture and misery). Maybe series three will pick up Hannah's story.

HollyGibney · 01/06/2018 15:29

That's interesting, I took the opposite interpretation, that he had handed over his keys and let her make her own decision even if reckless, because he respected her right to autonomy.

I thought this too.

Nick was in The Social Network with Armie Hammer and Jesse Eisenberg, that was a good movie andI really like him as an actor. I was thinking today of when June tells him she is pregnant and Serena walks in to see that moment of connection between them. I almost cried right there walking the dog. I might have to rewatch season one even though I only just finished, there's nuances and undercurrents I probably missed.

LapsedHumanist · 01/06/2018 16:14

I didn’t mean it was Nick’s intention to show her her impotence. My point was that’s what the writers were doing.

It’s fully possible for an individual to act morally well, but for the structure of the society to stymie that.

Whether or not Nick respects her autonomy carries little weight in that society. He has a little power as an eye, but only within proscribed limits. He has very little status. He does what he can, but that only amounts to a slightly longer leash.

Many women are in relationships with good men, who treat them with respect. It doesn’t mean that there is no structural or societal discrimination against women.

CruCru · 01/06/2018 16:15

The thing is, Serena must suspect that Nick knows where June is - but can’t point the fight at him. She may just say that she thought he was keen on her and is worth following. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nick is killed off in the next few episodes - it would make sense from a storyline perspective and so far none of the main characters have died.

Interesting on Max Minghella. Didn't realise that's who he was! His Aunt is Edana Minghella, a jazz singer who I follow. Fabulous voice, I saw her last year in the jazz club below Pizza Express in Soho, her niece got up and sung. A lot of the Minghellas were there, very talented family!

boatyardblues · 01/06/2018 17:28

Yes, yes he’s puuurty, but enough of the Minghella love.
