I’ve just heard that this will start in the US at the end of this month but Channel 4 haven’t said when they’ll start showing it yet.

AnyFucker · 21/05/2018 16:47

*it

EvilTwins · 21/05/2018 16:56

Sunday nights at 9pm @AnyFucker

AnyFucker · 21/05/2018 16:57

Was hoping for consecutive nights. 😏

EvilTwins · 21/05/2018 17:01

Sadly not :(

CurbsideProphet · 21/05/2018 17:02

I was also hoping for 2 a week. As others have said, we knew what would happen in season 1. Now we're beyond the novel I'm impatient to see what happens, but also nervous that they'll get it wrong!

KirstenRaymonde · 21/05/2018 17:06

Amazing first episode of the new season, I couldn’t fully watch it, had to do something else the whole time (scroll Mumsnet!) The gas ring was horrendous, I could barely watch her cutting the ear tag off. Elizabeth Moss is sensational.

I tried to explain to DP why it feels so close to home but he just didn’t get it, from a man who calls himself a feminist

Melamin · 21/05/2018 17:06

Some of the senior guide leaders in my youth would have relished the aunt Lydia role I fear

As would my sewing teachers. They used to love teaching the boys to cook though Hmm

It seems to be next on at 2am on 4Seven, followed by MB's What Makes a Woman ? If you can stomach it.

Next episode Sunday Ch4 9pm

Melamin · 21/05/2018 17:08

I didn't get beyond the gas ring. Glad I missed the ear thing.

WitchSharkadder · 21/05/2018 17:43

The gas ring really got me too. Awful.

I sobbed when Alma wet herself as the noose was being put around her neck too.

Unbelievable acting from everyone involved.

AnyFucker · 21/05/2018 18:21

Cheers, Melamin

Magpie24 · 21/05/2018 18:26

Thanks for the response on the ear tag.

Watching this series pregnant i think will make it even tougher to watch than it would have been!

carol1234568 · 21/05/2018 20:01

What happens to the children of gilead when they grow up? Do they become handmaids?

iheartmichellemallon · 21/05/2018 20:05

I don't know carol - think we debated that one on the last thread but can't remember the consensus!

CruCru · 21/05/2018 20:09

The children born before Gilead (like Hannah) will become Handmaids.

The children born to Handmaids but raised by Commanders and their Wives will become Commanders or Wives (possibly the girls would be brought out in a system similar to that for Debutantes). I’m not sure where the next generation of drivers / Marthas will come from.

WitchSharkadder · 21/05/2018 20:20

I thought it was speculation re whether Hannah will become a handmaid when she’s older? I do agree it’s likely though, they seemed to foreshadow it when she was dressed in pink and all other children of Gilead are always in white.

The econopeople’s children are the next generation of marthas/drivers etc aren’t they? Although, I think ‘successful’ handmaids (as their reward for producing babies is never to be sent to the colonies) might become marthas too.

Soubriquet · 21/05/2018 20:20

Yes I would suspect pink girls would become handmaids

RiaOverTheRainbow · 21/05/2018 20:25

In the book Hannah was a Daughter, and we saw a group of older daughters become Wives. I think it roughly goes: rich women become Wives; poor women become Econowives if they're (probably) fertile, Marthas if they're not, or a few become Aunts; 'sinful' fertile women become handmaids; lost causes are sent to the colonies.

userofthiswebsite · 21/05/2018 20:54

No-one's talked about that poor lady who looked to be many months expecting who was chained to a rail with just a bed inn the centre of the room. The one who as per AL had tried to drink drain fluid.

CurbsideProphet · 21/05/2018 21:00

That was horrific wasn't it user the absolute belief that woman is just a vessel for carrying a child.

kalapattar · 21/05/2018 21:40

That was such a hard episode. Their punishment for not stoning Jeanine (?) in the last episode - mock executions and stress positions. What does that do to the mind? Apparently ISIS (and other organisations) do mock executions on their captives - I can't imagine what that does to you?

So many disturbing scenes all about control- especially the one with the lady chained to a bed. Just after OfRed was thinking she had some control in the situation. Then a potential future shown to her. Any fight must have been taken out of her then.

I was so pleased about the ending of this episode. This sounds like it's going to be a horrifying series but there needs to be hope.

Crikeyblimey · 21/05/2018 21:48

Fantastic! I’ve just watched episode 1 and can’t wait for next week.

It’s favinating that I (amongst others) are feeling such animosity towards Aunt Lidya. When in reality (well, this reality) is the men have created this dystopia. But we are most outraged at a woman. I think it is the obvious betrayal of her sex that makes Lydia so reprehensible. The ‘individualism’ of her situation - doing what she seems to believe is for the best (be that for herself or a twisted idea of the greater good). When she ‘should’ be doing what she does for the good of all women.

I loved the book way back. Loved series one and so far am loving series 2.

honeysucklejasmine · 21/05/2018 21:49

Quite literally forced pregnancy, user. Horrifying.

charlyn · 21/05/2018 21:56

Is anyone else worried that Hannah might be used to get June to come back/ do what they want? I really hope June is able to escape and nothing bad happens to her daughter.

honeysucklejasmine · 21/05/2018 22:00

Charlyn not sure. Who's more valuable to Gilead? Hannah or pregnant June? If June were not pregnant then I'd say Hannah, but I'm not sure. June would have to believe she is more valuable and therefore Hannah is at risk of harm.

I can't see June just leaving her there though. I expect, if she makes it, that she spends the rest of her time trying to retrieve Hannah too.
