I would love Phylis to get comfort from pc Mostache

PodgeBod · 04/03/2018 23:25

I agree Feisty it's like the writers decided that midwifery was too dull to carry the series and we would prefer a series based on the doctor. It's really needs a revamp to get back to it's roots. Maybe some new writing blood. I feel like the writers are too sentimental and never want to have a main character be the bad guy. So they are all surprisingly progressive with no dissent at all. It doesn't need to become Eastenders but a bit of conflict between the characters is essential.

BlueLego · 04/03/2018 23:38

I reckon Tom’s going to go off the rails and lose his faith

2018February · 04/03/2018 23:39

Yes! Agree about midwives; that's why we watch it.

Dr Turner pops up bloody everywhere. Why is he so central to the programme???

I mean I know his wife is the writer, but honestly in RL would there honestly have been ONE GP covering everything? Home visits, prison visits, Maternity homes... really???

Ollivander84 · 04/03/2018 23:43

Just caught up (recorded it) and found myself snotty crying everywhere. Long time since a TV series has made me cry

BlueLego · 04/03/2018 23:43

Yes sister Julienne needs a decent storyline. And I want to know what’s happened to Cynthia!

WitchSharkadder · 04/03/2018 23:47

I’m outraged that poor Mary Cynthia hasn’t even had so much as a mention this series, Lego

MrsHathaway · 04/03/2018 23:49

Not sure why dr Turner got so involved so quickly on the basis of a cut in his hand. Not very plausible.

Now that you buggers have pointed out that it's the Dr Turner show I can't unsee it. He popped his head round the door about three seconds after teenage mum delivered her baby, with an expression that can only have meant "at last, I can plausibly be back on screen". Fucksake.

DC1 came downstairs upset about a recent bereavement and wanting distracting from thoughts of death. "Do you want to watch this programme about people in 1960s London having babies?" I asked. Fuck.

The episode pissed me off massively. Bollocks. Should have been much more about Lucille/racism/homesickness/ inclusion.

BlueLego · 04/03/2018 23:50

It’s like Chummy all over again! Where did she go? Her husband kept showing up randomly for a while and then he went without a trace

LineysInTheSnow · 04/03/2018 23:51

I'm also very fond of Mrs Buckle. I remember her in Soldier Soldier (I think!).

CocoLoco87 · 04/03/2018 23:52

Why are there always references to teal on these threads? I don't understand! Is it the colour of the nuns outfits?

SimonBridges · 04/03/2018 23:55

Everything in the series is teal. Everything.
I think it reached peak teal with the woman who had PTSD from a previous birth. Her flat was completely teal.

I remember her in Soldier Soldier (I think!).

I seem to recall her husband was called Tony (can hear her whine his name) and he had a kind of bushy moustache. I think he was a reasonably senior NCO which is why she was always trying to organise the NCOs' WAGs' events.

Loved Soldier Soldier. Amazing locations.

LizzieCorday · 05/03/2018 00:02

Lucille being sad that she had no one to pray with, and she lives in a bloody convent, that bit took the piss

No, it made sense. It's not the nuns the nurses are close with, its each other. They don't spend cosy evenings in the bedrooms with the nuns! And the other nurses around her are not religous at all.
Also the nuns are a very different type of religious to her. They don't pray or worship in the way Lucille would.

SimonBridges · 05/03/2018 00:08

Teal!

That said it looked at lot less teal on my phone screen than it did on the tv.

That episode reduced me to a sobbing heap. Doesn't help that I have had a close family bereavement in the last few months. Brought it all back Sad

Phyllis was brilliant as always.

I suppose the problem is as they move through the times births will become more hospital led so it will be hard to simply focus on the midwives. Also as with all these dramas they start to become more focused on the main characters and their lives rather than what is going on around them

MargotLovedTom1 · 05/03/2018 00:17

Well, that was a bit shit! Poor Babs. Where the hell were her mother and father though? Surely they would've hot footed it to their very unwell daughter's bedside? Unless they're dead of course, in which case I'll let them off.

Obviously they had to kill Barbara off when the actress said she wanted to leave. She and Tom were so sickly happy together that death could be the only thing to separate them.

MrsHathaway · 05/03/2018 00:19

Also the nuns are a very different type of religious to her. They don't pray or worship in the way Lucille would.

Agree, as someone who's tried different kinds of churches and (briefly) lived abroad. Somehow it's lonelier and worse going where they do it wrong than not going at all even if it's nominally something you love.

LineysInTheSnow · 05/03/2018 00:20

MrsHathaway, I could quite enjoy a rerun of Soldier, Soldier. I bet it would be hilarious.

MrsHathaway · 05/03/2018 00:22

Sometimes it crops up on the repeats channels. Actually beautifully acted, but very easy to watch.

Unicornsandrainbows3 · 05/03/2018 00:33

No, no, no! Not Barbara!! Kill the Dr off but leave the nuns and nurses alone!

OnePotato2Potato · 05/03/2018 00:50

Oh no... i havnt watched it but opened the thread anyway...I dont think I can bare to watch it.

It reminds me of the xmas episode of Downton Abbey where a certain character dies unexpectedly. I proper sobbed at that too. Sad

Killybashangel · 05/03/2018 00:53

Loved Lucille going to her new welcoming church and getting her mojo back.

MadisonAvenue · 05/03/2018 01:08

MrsH I think her character was called Joy in Soldier Soldier?
