Liked ridley Scott speech

purpleme12 · 18/02/2018 22:54

I think 3 Billboards looks rubbish but just my opinion.

Shape of Water looks very weird but I have liked Guillermo del Toro's films (well the ones I've seen that he's had something to do with) so it makes me wonder if it's worth taking the risk

iceycage · 18/02/2018 22:55

And actually I'd like to say that film and the arts absolutely can save lives.
It can reach people in a way that not much else can. Young gay lad growing up in the middle of the American Midwest who's been disowned by his family for coming out and watches Call Me By Your Name? A storyteller's power shouldn't be underrated.
As Ridley Scott just said "entertainment can be the most powerful form of education "

I'd say most have been pretty humblewhy watch when you clearly think it's all a load of Hollywood nonsense

I'm not I went to bed!

GreenSeededGrape · 18/02/2018 22:56

Have you seen it purple or just basing it on a trailer Hmm

3 Billbords was very good and the acting great.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 18/02/2018 22:56

3 billboards is brilliant, it might look rubbish but it’s great, honestly.

mercurymaze · 18/02/2018 22:57

What a fab speech from Ridley Scott

Ihatebuildabear · 18/02/2018 22:58

That's a good point icycage but they still don't deserve all this back slapping and arse licking compared to you know people who do actually save lives, drs, nurses, paramedics. I like films but we have our priorities very wrong sometimes.

mercurymaze · 18/02/2018 23:00

yes belfast I watched a fascinating documentary at Christmas about Laurel and Hardy and stan laurel's youth, that in itself would make a great film.

purpleme12 · 18/02/2018 23:00

Greenseededgrape yes I'm just basing it on the trailer. I'm just saying I'm not tempted myself that's all.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 18/02/2018 23:24

I think you're right in that doctors etc are not celebrated in the same way but that would be very, very difficult to do, wouldn't it? I know where I worked (teaching) those who deserved an award wouldn't be the ones to get one, but the arse-licking numpties would.

One of my children's involved in the film industry and you have to remember that this is the pinnacle of those people's lives. Most people will only ever get one BAFTA. And it gives recognition to the composers and editors and sound designers who aren't normally recognised at all.

I like to watch it to see a selection of new films and get annoyed when the same ones crop up again and again in the same programme, but then I just turn the sound off and ignore it.

My favourite is the bit at the end where they show all the technical/short film type awards and you see the joy and excitement from the winners.

If you haven't seen them, God's Own Country and Lady Macbeth are both worth seeing.
