Slightly copying the old thread's title...

Come on Corrie writers! Get a grip! This is the thread to moan about the utter tosh that we end up watching, or in some cases to praise the actors because some of them are actually pretty good! Let's discuss!

OP posts:

Bethany is bright, bilingual and could go to university. But as previous posters mentioned, anyone with a modicum of intelligence who moves onto the Street is eventually brought low so I expect she’ll end up doing manicures at Audrey’s or in the factory once this storyline ends.

eddiemairswife · 14/01/2018 15:02

The youngsters seem to have no ambitions. Has Faye ever expressed a desire to go to University, or even mentioned a future career? She'll be 16 in March so must currently be studying for GCSEs, and should be thinking about her A Levels. Seb just does anything that comes along, Sophie and Rosie are window-cleaners; hardly the job for ambitious young women. Daniel....degree...waiter, what about his journalism hopes?

Akire · 14/01/2018 15:55

Ageee about Sophie, when Kev has two garage sites and she was in full clipboard holding mode you could get away with it. But now he’s just at one (can’t work out if this is old one) she could really be thinking of a better job.

Least Craig has a decent job. It be interesting what they do with Fay and the twins and Simon don’t think they are portraying any of them as Brian’s or Britain. These days not got hope of buying anywhere without a decent wage so need to pull their finger out.

EB123 · 14/01/2018 15:59

Zone What about Amy, she seems quite bright.

LineysRunt · 14/01/2018 16:08

It would be good to see the scriptwriters portray a normal wc state school kid applying for university and going through the hideous loans / accommodation process, with divorced parents of limited means themselves arguing about contributions, and staggered at the cost of living in a matchbox in Halls of Residence, having to be a guarantor, paying deposits upfront, etc.

But I rather imagine the scriptwriters don't have that knowledge.

Bloody hell, talk about posting on the wrong thread! Grin I'll report that.

JustDanceAddict · 14/01/2018 16:42

I agree re the uni thing. If they didn’t all do menial jobs on The Street, they’d go away to college or uni and have to be written out! Someone went to uni in Eastenders years ago though...

LineysRunt · 14/01/2018 16:52

Yes, on EE there's Sausage, and Libby.

In Corrie, there's Ken, about 55 years ago.

Eastie77 · 14/01/2018 16:58

I seem to remember Todd was very bright and considered Oxbridge material. Can’t remember what happened - maybe Sarah falling pregnant- but he ended up not going. Steve’s twin went to university.

eddiemairswife · 14/01/2018 17:00

Years ago I think Toyah went to University; Todd was considered to be Oxbridge material when he was at school; Dev's daughter, Amber, dropped out.
So many students now attend a local University and live at home, that a character need not be written out if they got a place.

LineysRunt · 14/01/2018 17:00

And Daniel's Oxford ambitions came to nowt when Sinead was / wasn't pregnant, I think. Now he works in the bistro and moons about after her.

Andy. That was his name.

LineysRunt · 14/01/2018 17:05

About half my son's year 11 class at bog standard comp ended up at university. Some local, some fairly local, some living away. Everything from Bash Street Uni to Poncetastic College, Poshford.

It's reality. As is the financial juggling for families, the long university holidays, the interesting new friends ...

It all seems very unexplored in Corrie.

Kikashi · 14/01/2018 17:08

Michelle's son went away to uni (with one day notice)- but dropped out or had to leave due his drug taking lifestyle iirc. I suppose Adam went to uni as did Aliyah (fashion design) and Rana (nursing). Toyah went too I think (she was a counsellor)

In Neighbors I think they invented a local uni so that characters could stay on the street and not have to be written out.

There could be a Wetherfield Uni and Jude could teach his Marine Biology there. You could live on the street and still go to one of the Manchester Uni's. They could have a "student" house to mix up the gene pool a bit.

usedtogotomars · 14/01/2018 17:11

Michelle’s son, switched at birth, forgotten about!

LineysRunt · 14/01/2018 17:16

Phelan could build a Halls of Residence. Bury all the bodies under the laundrette room.

Ken would be Emeritus Professor of Journalism and Fizz would be Visiting Fellow in Wide-Eyed Staring and Advanced Gawping.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 14/01/2018 17:53

Michelle could lecture in arm folding and eye rolling.

millimat · 14/01/2018 19:21

Eva could be the Professor of Piggin Language Grin

LineysRunt · 14/01/2018 19:23
Grin

There would a Chair of Corrie Classics.

JustDanceAddict · 14/01/2018 20:30

RE Neighbours, I remember Mike (Guy Pearce) going to uni in the 80s I think it was!! I’m sure no-one called it uni here then, Neighbours changed the vernacular!!!!

woodhill · 14/01/2018 20:41

Wasn't Curly a bit of a scholar and did't Fizz reconnect with John Stape on an evening course.

LineysRunt · 14/01/2018 21:09

Curly had a telescope.

EdithWeston · 14/01/2018 21:12

Curly mentioned on one of the Classic Corrie episodes last week that he had A levels. Between being in business with Tery, and joining Freshco as a manager, he went and did some sort of business studies course. Was that a degree? I can't remember.

scrabbler3 · 14/01/2018 21:19

I think that Yasmin and Brian are graduates too.

I agree that it would be good if they were to show the current university process though.

GlacindaTheTroll · 14/01/2018 21:32

It would probably be as realistic as the admissions and absence procedure for Bessie Street Prinary and Weatherfield Comp
