Anyone else looking forward to this? The writer also wrote the recent Robbie Coltrane drama, National Treasure, and Sarah Lancashire is always superb.

Omg...was her mother played by Sue Johnston? Blimey....!!!

FawnDrench · 11/01/2018 08:35

I'm hooked!

Who was the woman in the flat that SL took the sausages to and who looked after SL at the end when she arrived there drunk?
Can't work it out.

My only other comment is that I think the fact that Kiri had nosebleeds will somehow be significant- why show it and mention it otherwise?

Italiangreyhound · 11/01/2018 08:58

I meant her response in the car.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/01/2018 09:18

Fawn my understanding of that woman is that she was a child SL used to be the social worker for and they’ve maintained a relationship. She mentioned that she used to bring all the other children to McDonald’s but this woman she brought to a German sausage place. Although it looks like it is maybe a bit more of a one sided relationship with SL bringing sausages the woman has no need for and turning up when she is drunk. The woman is an addict so it’s probably not the healthiest of relationships with SL seeming slightly dependant on it.

Italiangreyhound · 11/01/2018 09:30

Does anyone else think it is kind of odd they still do an identify the body thing? Now we have DNA testing they could do a DNA test first couldn't they and know before the identify the body thing.

@FawnDrench "My only other comment is that I think the fact that Kiri had nosebleeds will somehow be significant- why show it and mention it otherwise?" I think so too. But then I thought they would find blood stained clothes and her not be dead but them think she was... what do I know!

@FawnDrench I think you are right.

Italiangreyhound · 11/01/2018 09:31

Sorry I meant @DonnyAndVladSittingInATree I think you are right. about the relationship with the woman who likes sauages.

FawnDrench · 11/01/2018 09:39

Thank you Donny for enlightening me.

Re the nosebleeds - of course it could be a red herring or "explain away" if any of Kiri's blood is found at sites she frequented or on clothes/ people that Kiri had contact with - including SL as Kiri had a nosebleed in the car.

I'm obviously overthinking this aren't I?

Anyhooo - looking forward to next week's episode - should be eventful if the trailer is anything to go by.

Clawdy · 11/01/2018 09:43

One thing that seemed extremely unlikely was the foster mother declaring that she loved Kiri more than her own son. Who would hurt their child like that? And publicly. I think that's the sort of thing only a male script writer would think feasible.

ClaudiaNaughton · 11/01/2018 09:47

I’d like to offer a happy and settled home to the dog.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/01/2018 09:53

One thing I’ve just realised is that they haven’t yet mentioned cause of death. I’m assuming a post mortem will happen but even without that the police will usually have a fair idea what happened. I know the grandfather mentioned her neck which I am assuming alludes to cause of death but it feels like nothing is being confirmed. Again, perhaps that is deliberate.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/01/2018 09:55

I feel like a hypocrite posting that now actually, I’m usually whingeing about the writers in Corrie beating us over the head with clunky clues to the upcoming storyline so we can all tell what will happen, now I’m whingeing about not being spoon fed enough info! Grin

blueskyinmarch · 11/01/2018 10:42

I like it when they feed you little clues and snippets then leave you to stew for a week before adding more things and clearing up others. I am interested to see where it goes.

Marcine · 11/01/2018 10:44

Loved this but had to put subtitles on too!

I'm enjoying it so far. I think Sarah L's character is complex and not that likeabke, and certainly unprofessional in some ways. (The boozing, for one - that seems to be pretty serious if she has to take a hip flask everywhere and put vodka in her morning coffee - could this possibly have affected her judgement before?). If it were ITV doing this, then I suspect they would be giving her the stereotypical "loveable/ditsy" treatment but what they're doing here is more layered. I also think the dog is there to illustrate that she is not actually that great at caring for someone that depends on her, i.e. that dog's life is pretty chaotic. Interested to see how it all pans out.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/01/2018 12:24

I think it will be discovered that she is an alcoholic and she will be hung out to dry by her employers because of it. They will blame the whole thing on her because of the drinking. Which may or may not have affected her judgement, but her line manager signs off her work and is supposed to intervene if she disagrees with her decisions.

When she got out of the car drunk last night she was fleeing from the press. Can you imagine if they had seen her like that? Shock I’m amazed she didn’t crash into them or another car.

MissEliza · 11/01/2018 18:03

Of course there's going to be a massive twist. When the cause seems so obvious from the very beginning you just know it's all going to go pear shaped.
I have to say I found it a bit graphic when you actually saw the little girl lying in the chapel of rest. She looks a bit like a friend of dd's as well so I found it a bit hard to take.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/01/2018 18:51

I wonder how long the foster mother watched the house for. And why she didn’t call the social worker when the Dad turned up. You would have thought that would have been her first action.

southeastdweller · 11/01/2018 19:23

That was a really engrossing hour, brilliantly acted by all. The portrayal of the arse-covering line manager, in particular, was chillingly believable.

But Miriam taking her dog to work and her swigging from the hip flask when she was on duty were silly and heavy-handed ways to signify that she's a bit of a loose cannon and 'other'. The writer's mother was a carer so he should know better.

topcat2014 · 11/01/2018 19:28

The actress playing the foster mother also played a sinister character in the Missing - married to the butcher.

What have I seen the line manager in? It seem's like lots of things, but cannot think. Not cold feet, but something similar?

topcat2014 · 11/01/2018 19:30

Just looked on IMDB - Claire Rushbrook, she played a part on Home Fires

AnyFucker · 11/01/2018 19:58

I remember Claire Rushbrook from Secrets and Lies

Her part as an ass covering middle manager was very true to life

Clawdy · 11/01/2018 21:06

Did we see the foster mother watching the house? I missed that.I thought I saw a parked car with a young black guy in it, and the grandad looking across the road at him.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/01/2018 21:36

Yes there was an aerial shot of the street as the social worker left and you could see the silver car of the foster Mum at the junction whilst the gold car of the Dad pulled up. Then it cuts to a view of the gold car from inside the silver car.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/01/2018 21:37

I assume we are to believe it was the foster Mum because the car that was following the social worker on the way to drop off was silver and looked like foster Mum driving.
