I was just about to start a thread about this, watching it now

JodieG1 · 23/04/2007 21:01

Not liking it already. Spankings and chastisement. Smacking paddles! Giving them away for free in the neighbourhood

Raised by the Hand of God: Hidden LivesMonday 23 April
9:00pm - 10:00pm
Five
Documentary series exploring unusual lives. This edition looks at three families in the UK and US whose ideas on the upbringing and disciplining of their children are directly informed by the Bible. The families talk candidly about their Biblical Parenting methods, including their beliefs that children are inherently disobedient, and their use of corporal punishment such as rods and spatulas to discipline their children.

OMG - I don't think I can watch much more of this.

Spanking paddles and switches.

Sick, sick, sick.

JodieG1 · 23/04/2007 21:05

I really disagree with that, children aren't inherently disobedient

wheresthehamster · 23/04/2007 21:05

I don't like it either. These people are not normal. Using God's name to abuse children.
I'm speechless.

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2007 21:06

I am not watching it

watching NEW TRICKS BBC1

fannyannie · 23/04/2007 21:07

I've already switched off - and yes I'm a Christian - and yes we do smack our children (occasionaly) - but I don't like the way it looks like it's going to make out that whacking children with paddles etc is an inheritantly "Christian" way of bringing children up......

JodieG1 · 23/04/2007 21:07

Smacking worked so well that the older boy was smacked "quite a lot of the time".

expatinscotland · 23/04/2007 21:08

Watching this programme about student nurses instead.

They're in Lewis and I like to hear their accents.

JodieG1 · 23/04/2007 21:08

I'm catholic but not practising but don't believe in smacking.

expatinscotland · 23/04/2007 21:10

That is one NASTY operation!

GROSSARAMA.

BonyM · 23/04/2007 21:10

So God encourages these people to physically abuse their children?

I'm an atheist, but I thought God was supposed to be forgiving, kind, etc.??

controlfreaky2 · 23/04/2007 21:11

these beliefs are the reason amazon was removed as an mn partner...... books espousing these beliefs (hitting children with implements as "discipline") were available and a lot of people took exception to it.... this sounds v v distasteful. hope they get followed up by ssd.

fannyannie · 23/04/2007 21:11

there we go you see - BonyM has illustrated my point perfectly..........

BonyM · 23/04/2007 21:12

Hmmm, am going to watch BBC4 instead (I'm so highbrow...).

expatinscotland · 23/04/2007 21:13

It's much better, Bony.

Lovely accents, too.

Aw, the wee one is going to school in Scots Gaelic.

BonyM · 23/04/2007 21:13

No fanny, I don't believe it for a second - these people are obviously extremist nutters...

You're missing hearing a gorgeous Hebridean accent.

fannyannie · 23/04/2007 21:14

I know BonyM but unfortunately a large proportion of the secular/non-Christian people watching this programme will believe that

Anyhow - really should go and tidy the kitchen up and eat my dinner

JodieG1 · 23/04/2007 21:15

I can't believe people will assume ALL christians are like that

BonyM · 23/04/2007 21:15

People do a lot of distasteful things in the name of religion. One of the reasons that I don't subscribe to one.

fannyannie · 23/04/2007 21:16

perhaps not Jodie - but some will assume that all Christians who smack (ie DH and I) are like that..

JodieG1 · 23/04/2007 21:18

I'd hope that not everyone would be so blinkered though. Maybe not but I wouldn't assume all Christians were like that.
