New thread lassies for all things Jamie and Claire (and all things in between).

Only two episodes left! Hope everyone enjoyed episode 11.

Quirky Her unconventional upbringing of course fits her much more to be Jamie's wife than Frank's. Even if she had not gone through the stones, I reckon Claire would have got bored with Frank quite soon, but I wonder if she would she still have gone on to be a doctor without her time travels?

quirkychick · 02/02/2018 13:31

I was just thinking that. In the beginning Claire says that she and Frank were trying to find a way back to each other, which presumably meant things were not quite the same.

blibblibs · 02/02/2018 18:00

Just popping in to say hello lassies Smile
My Jamie cherry was only popped in early January after seeing Caitriona on This Morning with Holly. I must say though it was Holly and her super fan behaviour rather than Caitriona that made me give it a watch and I owe her a great gratitude!
I've well and truly fallen into the Outlander rabbit hole and after binge watching all three seasons, reading all your threads from the last few years, your a dedicated bunch, I must say, I'm making my way through the second book.
I'm hoping you'll all make my first droughtlander bearable Grin

Marsali · 02/02/2018 18:14

I laughed at Sam's tweet today: 'Another day on Fraser's Fridge... ClaireShouldBringBackCentralHeating' Grin

Poor lad, it's freezing in Scotland atm.

Claire and Frank can't have known each other. I think he is older than her, but she's 19ish when they get married, they get split up during the war, they're just getting back together and then she disappears before reappearing pregnant with another man's child.

I think she would have probably landed herself in a mother and baby home in reality

There's a line in the books that always bothers me. Frank definitely has affairs during the war, but Claire is quite offended when he asks her. BUT just as she kisses Jamie for the first time, the first person narrative says 'I had kissed my fair share of men, especially during the war years'

Confused
YoniHuman · 02/02/2018 18:29

Hello & welcome Namedy
Other shows that often get a good mention are most things that involve men in period dress or lack thereof. Grin Poldark,, Black Sails etc. I am currently on Season 4 of Viking’s.

quirkychick · 02/02/2018 20:54

Marsali doesn't Brianna try to invent a boiler for heating? That's quite funny, though.

I assumed Claire meant she had kissed but not done much more, during the war. I think there's another bit just after she married Jamie where she talks about having had infatuations but stopping from taking them too far.

JenMumsnet · 02/02/2018 21:50

I think your right Quirky. I'm sure I remember her talking about an infatuation with a surgeon.

Marsali · 02/02/2018 22:04

It's annoying because she gets so cross with Frank when he asks her if she cheated. I think she tells him to get out.

Just a nit pick!

Lessstressedhemum · 02/02/2018 22:37

She had kissed men and she wasn't a virgins when she married Frank. All part of her unconventional upbringing. And she certainly snogged some doctors during the war, but she says that's as far as it went. Frank was definitely unfaithful. But she was very angry with him which is just a wee bit hypocritical.

Yes, Brianna tries to put underfloor heating into her cabin. She builds a kiln to fire water pipes and plans to use the heat generated to heat the house and provide hot water. It's all part of her plan to single handedly modernise the world. Fortunately for all of us, she has yet to manage internal plumbing and central heating. No doubt those will come in books nine and ten.

quirkychick · 03/02/2018 07:40

Marsali it's kind of like her getting jealous about Laoghaire (obviously Jamie shouldn't have lied) when she went back to be married to Frank. I do, however, like Claire and her directness, it's probably because dp is very forthright and direct.

Marsali · 03/02/2018 13:17

I think she was mostly pissed off with the marriage because she didn't like Laoghaire given the whole witch trial thing. She had somehow forgot to mention that to Jamie in the books.

I like Claire too, it's just something that irks me.

quirkychick · 06/02/2018 14:38

I suppose as we see Claire's viewpoint we get her internal feelings about Laoghaire, even if they're not fair or rational.

Just re-watching the S2 finale, so sad!

MoNigheanDonn · 10/02/2018 06:53

Started Dragonfly in Amber yesterday. It's ok so far but I'm going to struggle with it as it's the France part and I didn't enjoy it on screen though the costumes were stunning. I felt it was just filler.

MoNigheanDonn just remember they go to France, so that you can appreciate them coming back to Scotland (and be sad when they have to leave again).

I've started on S3, Frank has just conveniently died, it seems to flow quite nicely from S2. I think I binge watched S1 & 2 and the beginning of S3, then had to go to weekly (which was too much!).

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/02/2018 14:12

Nothing is as good as S1.

I've watched some of S1 and some of Series 3 (no idea why I'm watching them like that) but I've noticed that Jamie's hair/wig in S3 is awful. I know he's supposed to be older but the hair just does nothing for him at all. And from the photos I've seen of the filming of S4, his wig in that is even worse.

@MoNigheanDonn I struggled with all the books subsequent to the first one. (Imo) they were completely different in tone and pace. Out of the three that came straight after Outlander, my favourite was Drums Of Autumn although I'd struggle now to tell you the plot. I gave up with The Fiery Cross. I'll just think of them living happily ever after in substitute Scotland America. Confused

There's been talk of making 7 series or something and moving away from Jamie and Claire as the focus and turning it into an ensemble piece but I'm not sure if that would work. I'm not sure SH and CB will want to go that far either, neither of them are looking particularly happy at the moment.

Lessstressedhemum · 10/02/2018 22:21

They are looking very tired, aren't they. And then there is all the grief that they get from "fans". They are contracted for seven seasons, so who knows. The books veer away from focusing so closely on Jamie and Claire after book four and there is a lot of Brianna and Roger, sadly. So it may well develop into a kind of ensemble piece. Can't say I look forward to that very much. I wish Jamie and Claire could just live happily ever after on the farm.

quirkychick · 11/02/2018 08:44

Not sure the superfans will like it veering away from the books. Rewatching S3, does make me appreciate how much the screenwriters have tidied up the plot, so maybe they will make all the Revolutionary battles/war more interesting and exciting or focus very much on the life and characters of Fraser's Ridge. 7 Seasons focusing on CB and SH is a massive ask, really, for actors, whereas the books are very much their relationship - oh no disaster strikes - Jamie saves the day - their relationship etc.

madamefraser · 11/02/2018 11:00

They do look bloody knackered from pics but its freezing in Scotland at the mo and can you imagine working a lot outside when it's like this ( I like my warm office with radiator thanks ) .
I'm on book 4 and even though I though nothing could top Voyager I am in love with this book ! I can't imagine it going to the screen though as it's a lot about J & Cs Little intimate conversations . I guess though there's enough stand out plot points to hang it off ..

snozzlemaid · 11/02/2018 11:08

I've just seen the trailer for the film SH is in, 'When the starlight ends'.
I would love to see him in something else but this looks awful. His accent is terrible and his hair's a mess.
Don't think I'll be rushing to see it.

quirkychick · 11/02/2018 13:15

snozzle I love Jamie's voice/accent but that accent is weird, as for the hair it makes the S3 wig look good. Perhaps it's all part of the character...

snozzlemaid · 11/02/2018 13:33

I agree. He usually has a gorgeous voice. Could maybe overlook the hair but I think coupled with the bad accent it wouldn't be watchable.

Lessstressedhemum · 12/02/2018 10:03

Is he American in it? I havent seen the trailer but HH seem to love it. I think the hair/beard thing is supposed to be part of his whole persona, representative of his state of mind a bit like Claire's aggressive hair Smile

Did anyone hear the HP sauce advert Sam voices? Dear God, he even makes condiments sexy!

snozzlemaid · 12/02/2018 16:51

Yes he's American

PavlovaPrincess · 12/02/2018 18:58

The cringe is too much with that clip Confused Can't bear it.

It's so weird, because I will watch anything and everything that (for example) Chris Hemsworth is in, because I love him but I only want to see Sam as Jamie.

Less Who is HH?

snozzlemaid · 12/02/2018 19:17

It's very cringy indeed. And I really wanted to like it.
HH is a Facebook group I think - Heughan's Heughligans.
