Caitriona Baldur is on This Morning right now.

It's obvious Holly is a super fan (she should join us on here) but Schofe isn't having any of it Grin

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/12/2017 10:56

Baldur?! Confused Balfe obviously.

Lessstressedhemum · 12/12/2017 11:09

Jamie is always a sun-kissed God. He is still that way when he is almost 60. Oh God, how I wish real life blokes my age were like that.

Curiously, I don't mind the sex scenes, it's an opportunity to appreciate Sam 's finer points! Agree about Cait being a bit of an unconvincing drunk, though. Sex is such a huge part of the book story and such a pivotal part of their relationship that, I think, there needs to be some in the show. There is less on TV than in the books, to the constant disappointment of the online book fans. Some of them were even disappointed with the finale, for reasons that I cannot fathom. You'd think they'd be happy that one of their favourite scenes was lifted almost directly from the book, just with a change of timing.

I found it a bit odd, when I started watching season 1, that a lot of the dialogue was lifted straight from the book. I suppose that was to keep the mad woman happy and also because, let's face it, Jamie gets all the best lines. It's one of the things that makes him so hot (apart from the obvious knicker combusting body and glorious red hair.)

Claire managed to do my head in this week again. Why can she never just do what she's told. And give it a rest with the pompous voice overs. What earthly use was a surgeon going to be on deck in those conditions?

Sam acted his socks off again, his facial expressions paint a thousand words. There is indeed unrest that Cait has been nominated for an award and he hasn't, although part of me can see why the fangirls are upset. He has really shone this season, more so, I think, than Cait has. And his pecs should get their own award, so should his behind.

AKAmyself · 12/12/2017 11:46

I think it’s unfair that sam didn’t get nominated. His performance in the first 3 episodes was outstanding, and I cannot help but think that he got snubbed because his plotlinea become so pantomimish as the season progresses. I am sure he has a bit of a Fabio reputation in some circles.

Cait had the “serious” parts in 1960s Boston that was always going to play best in awards season, and she got to act opposite TM so she really shone. Those parts look classy - Jamie in a cave can be dismissed as women’s fantasies.

So in a perverse way I think it is sam that suffered from mysoginism and prejudice here (all the ladies and only the ladies love him, so he must be mediocre).

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/12/2017 11:56

I think you're right aka

CB won't win anyway. It'll be Elisabeth Moss but I suppose it's nice to get nominated.

Lessstressedhemum · 12/12/2017 13:32

I think you're right as well, aka. His role plays to women's fantasies and he is, undoubtedly, fabulous to look at, so his acting is dismissed. It's a shame because his performances have been mesmerising, especially in the earlier episodes and, again, this week. He fills the screen and, quite often, makes the rest of the cast look like amateurs. I really thought that this year would be his year, but perhaps he is just regarded as a pretty boy bit of mum candy.

AKAmyself · 12/12/2017 13:46

It really saddens me and goes to show that gender prejudices hurt everyone, men and women. In this case it’s becuae women as consumers and women as critics and women as fans carry less weight than men.

I suppose I will have to get over it but one of the main reasons I love this tv adaptation is becuaer Starz have invested so much money and talent and intelligence in making a product targeted at women like us (who love romance and sixpacks and complex characters and historically accurate fiction) and Sam is so central to the success of this show - the whole thing would have collapsed if he wasn’t as good as he is.

He comes across as a genuinely humble man so hope this is not too much of a disappointment.

breadwidow · 12/12/2017 14:24

Yes yes yes to all the comments on Sam. He's great, at least as good as CB, so lack of nomination is disappointing. I wonder if the fantasy element is an issue - overall awards hate fantasy (as do I usually, outlander is different tho or was mainly different for most of season 1, second half of season 2, and most of S3)

MoNigheanDonn · 12/12/2017 17:46

Agree that Elizabeth Moss will win - Handmaids Tale was mind blowing. Just downloading This Morning onto my sky box to watch 😂 hope Sam appears soon, he and Holly were having a tweet convo the other day

I really respect Sam as an actor. His response to the brouhaha over his not having Jamie dissolve into a crying mess on seeing the photos of Bree made me respect him more. The way he played it seemed much more emotionally realistic to me. Here was a man stunned by the reappearance of the love of his life, not sure it was all real, and knowing there were some serious issues to be dealt with (L and her kids), it made sense for a more restrained reaction.

mateysmum · 12/12/2017 23:46

I'm really liking the LJG actor in the last episode. One minute he's all imperious and official, putting down a pretentious lieutenant who wants to arrest his beloved Jamie, and the next he's a love struck boy knowing he's about to say goodbye again to the love of his life.

I thought the end of the episode where J rescues C and they cling together on the beach puts J back in his proper place... a leader, a hero, a lover and protector of C. Be still my beating heart...

quirkychick · 13/12/2017 06:46

I think both CB and SH have acted their socks off this season. Lots of very emotional and difficult scenes for both of them. A shame for them both not to be nominated.

MoNigheanDonn · 13/12/2017 07:18

Totally agree quirky

David Berry was very good this week. His face as Jamie was walking away was pretty heart rending. By all accounts, he was very good in A Place to Call Home as well. And he is very easy on the eye. The casting folk must have open access to the secret hot guy lab.

Agree, quirky, all the lead actors have been very good this season. There was a lot of tough stuff to cover (there always is in an Outlander book), I just feel sad about Sam when he has put in such a brilliant and emotional performance.

Oh and the single manly tear right at the end nearly finished me off, again.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 13/12/2017 19:50

I agree that SH has been great in several scenes, but every now and then he does a sideways reaction shot and he's pure Joey Tribbiani. (smell the fart acting I believe it is called)

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 13/12/2017 20:18

he's pure Joey Tribbiani. (smell the fart acting I believe it is called)

Grin

Yes, he does! I sometimes think that might be down to the script though. Even as actor, some things must push the plausiblity threshold.

Marsali · 13/12/2017 21:35

I watched the finale last and thought it was really bad. The plotting was ridiculous, there was never any real sense of tension or danger, the acting (with the notable exception of the awesome David Berry. I’m shipping Jamie/LJG HARD!) wooden and unconvincing, and so many storylines tied up so shoddily I wondered why they even bothered including them (the campbells? Mr willoughby? The slave buying? That ridiculous drumming scene?). Don’t get me started on how ridiculous the storm was.

All in all it was a disappointing mess. Only redeeming scene for me was the last 5 minutes on the beach, hoping season 4 will feel more coherent and character based

Lessstressedhemum · 14/12/2017 10:45

The plotting in the book is ludicrous at the end. Really messy and jumbled, with all sorts of pointless stories that they couldn't miss out because the fans would be cross. Another instance of DG needing an editor strong enough to stand up to her.

I quite liked the drumming scene. I thought it made a nice parallel with the witch dance that Claire and Frank watched in the very beginning. J and C were even hiding in the long grass, peering out, just like C and F. At least they gave Margaret and Yi Tien Cho a happy ending, rather than him fleeing into the jungle and her going off with the slaves to be their voodoo mistress.

Last few minutes on the beach were lovely, though it was all a bit sleeping beauty. Prince Charming awakens his princess with a kiss. Again, single manly tearBlush, I love it.

cushioncovers · 14/12/2017 10:57

I enjoyed the drumming scene.

Found the link between claire killing the mad women can't spell her name and then seeing her skeleton years later a bit odd.

Lessstressedhemum · 14/12/2017 11:37

It's all part of Claire's growing woo powers Grin. Hopefully, she will fix Roger with the glowing blue light in the next book. Likely, by the time her hair is white, she will be able to confer immortality on herself and Jamie, so he can be a glorious studmuffin for all eternity.
