I thought Emily was rather too harsh with Mavis - she was trying to do the right thing. I dare say Emily will have cause to eat humble pie in the not too distance future. Arthur seems to be a pompous a*s.

ShatnersWig · 05/06/2018 15:09

I stopped watching Corrie when Emily went to visit Spider. I just knew it was a low key exit for Eileen Derbyshire, who wouldn't have wanted any fuss. Hope she's enjoying her retirement. Been lovely to see her in the Classic stuff, especially with Percy.

Corrie used to be superb at double acts. Jack and Vera. Deirdre and Blanche. Reg and Maureen. Mavis and Derek. Emily and Percy/Norris. Bet and Alec. Alf and Audrey. Curly and Racquel. Roy and Hayley were probably the last of that ilk. Pairings that were funny but could also break your heart.

ChevalierTialys · 05/06/2018 17:54

Isn't Emily wonderful when she gets going. I know she wasn't exactly fair to Mavis there but it was quite something to watch her erupt!

SuperSuperSuper · 05/06/2018 17:58

Gosh, Mark Casey. I used to think he looked like Marti Pellow, I really fancied him.

Erasure on the playlist at Shirley's party. And the Reynolds Girls' one hit wonder on the garage radio! Memories, memories.

90p for a half pint and a sherry!

I found Sandra's exit storyline odd. It is normal for 14 year olds to be home alone during half term, and people were more relaxed about it then, than they are now. Heck, 14/15 year olds were babysitting neighbours' kids on a Saturday night in return for a tenner where I lived! Sandra could have addressed his drinking and uncouthness without giving up her job. I didn't much like the insinuation that a fatherless young man must go off the rails tbh, and that a hardworking mum does him a disservice. I suppose though, that this ties in with attitudes of the time (see also domestic violence, which PPs already mentioned, as well as the casual sexism).

ShatnersWig · 05/06/2018 18:08

Oh yes, people always think of Emily as timid but when she gets her dander up, she can't half give it out. I remember when she gave goddaughter Tracy a piece of her mind once and even Tracy was taken aback she was stunned into silence. This is the woman who scaled a tree to save the Red Rec and survived being bashed round the head with a crowbar and escaped the attention of a suicidal bigamist!!

Hermiod · 05/06/2018 19:35

Not keen on Emily's new man, he is very strange

kikashi · 06/06/2018 08:18

Super -Yes, Sandra's exit was rushed and I agree most kids were left on their own at that age. Lots of 14/15 "wild child" girls were photographed going to clubs with celebs of the day. There were hordes of "latchkey" kids whose mothers worked - don't think SS would have been interested in Sandra Stubbs. Perhaps the actress needed to leave quickly.

I love how they make an ordinary thing like needing glasses a decent storyline with some banter in the pub and a bit educational too (with Jack's visit to the optician). Curly is still annoying me with his constant shouting - Shirley has done the right thing.

drearydeardre · 06/06/2018 08:27

just caught up this am with yesterdays. Curly deserved to lose Shirley - so selfish.
Anyway it made my day to see Kev working on a brown (with yellow stripe) Austin Allegro - I had one of those back in the day! A money pit on wheels - however you could lift the bonnet and see which bits of the engine bay did what.
I think the reality of the classis corrie is what makes it a pleasure to watch - the banter in the bar (customers and staff) and the community spirit so evident - where has this country gone so wrong in embracing the new. And having cars that have no simple engines any more.Shock

UnSub · 06/06/2018 09:57

I noticed a tshirt that Sally was wearing the other day in the pub, I am sure it said on the front Casual Life 1995, but it was 1989 Confused

ChevalierTialys · 06/06/2018 11:59

Curly was punching above his weight with Shirley. She was a sweet, thoughtful, upbeat kind of person. Sort of the opposite of him, he's totally self absorbed, behaving like a selfish, sarcastic arse. The party thing was misjudged on her part but she really was trying to help him and he belittled her quite a lot which is awful.

Iwantacampervan · 06/06/2018 12:35

Jack's glasses without the sticky tape!

BluthsFrozenBananas · 06/06/2018 16:38

I remembered Curly as being a kind of lovable loser type, but he's not at all, he's self obsessed and whiny. If it was 2018 he'd be the sort of man who spends a lot of time ranting from his keyboard. Maybe he becomes more likeable in the future, but right now I can't blame Shirley for wanting out.

ChevalierTialys · 06/06/2018 18:35

Also, Curly rapping in the corner shop - CRINGE!

CoolCarrie · 07/06/2018 18:58

What did you all think of Bet and her little black dress with elbow length gloves? Off out with Stella Rigby’s hubby!

cloudyweewee · 08/06/2018 06:37

Did I just hear Alf say that 3 weeks rent was £60?! Mind you I was at UnI in the 80s and the cost of 10 weeks in catered halls was £320 so I suppose it's about right.

ChevalierTialys · 08/06/2018 08:38

The 80's really were great weren't they. Wish I'd been born a bit earlier so I could have appreciated them. I'd have been 3 when these episodes were on the first time Grin

kikashi · 08/06/2018 09:16

I think Alf was undercharging for the flat - he rented it cheaply to Sally as he wanted her to keep working in the shop and then the rent stayed the same as he knew Curly. I think the flat is 2 bed as IIRC Alf lived there and Bet was his lodger at one stage. So £20 a week for a 2 bed flat in Manc in 1989 was pretty cheap.

HastingsLikeTheBattle · 08/06/2018 12:54

Here in the North East my mate rented a tiny 1 bed flat for £30 per week in 1989, so I guess it's not too unrealistic.

Love love love classic corrie, and this thread Grin

SuperSuperSuper · 08/06/2018 13:10

Bet's black dress was amazing.

Also loved Shirley's head-to-toe peach outfit. Few women could have carried that off.

I'm not crazy about Tina but she's going to be in it for a while (until the actress moves on to Eemmerdale/Goodnight Sweetheart) so I guess she must have been popular. She's supposed to be the young gorgeous barmaid who's replaced Gloria, but I find her quite unappealing (the character, not the actress).

ThevMacDonalds aren't far off, now. Or Des and Steph? I recall that Phyllis worked for Des after he became single and I don't think that Jill Summers is in it for that much longer, she died in the 1990s.

nokidshere · 08/06/2018 15:49

Omg I love shipphams salmon paste and still buy it when I can find it 😁 my own children think it's rank

It's not as salty as it used to be sadly

BluthsFrozenBananas · 08/06/2018 16:16

According to the internet £20 in 1989 is equivalent to £34.79 today. I was paying £35 a week to rent a room in the early 90s.

Tina’s second name is Fowler, which is kind of odd because it’s a name so associated with East Enders. It’s a bit like the new barmaid at the Queen Vic having the surname Duckworth or Ogden.

Redglitter · 08/06/2018 17:36

I recall that Phyllis worked for Des after he became single and I don't think that Jill Summers is in it for that much longer, she died in the 1990s

She's got a while to go yet. It's only at 1989 she left in 1996

Kannet · 08/06/2018 20:09

Do the macdonalds buy Rita's house

kikashi · 08/06/2018 20:40

I think they but Audrey and Alf's as they move to Grassmere Drive

Kannet · 10/06/2018 06:56

So which character is everyone looking forward to meeting most. Mine is Roy cropper. Don't think he comes into it for a long time yet though
