I still can’t believe it. Sadly I’m at work tonight but will catch up tomorrow. I don’t know if enjoy is the word. www.google.co.uk/amp/www.radiotimes.com/news/2017-10-16/george-michael-freedom-channel-4-extended-trailer/amp/

I didn't see the Liam Gallagher bit last night. However, as the news came out about George's death, I was following Twitter and saw Liam tweet 'It better not be true about George Michael'. Someone replied with a joke and he responded really angrily to them for making light of it, then tweeted a link to Praying for Time. He seemed as shocked and sad as so many people were.

Floellabumbags · 17/10/2017 10:24

As bizarre as it might seem Liam Gallagher is a George fan.

I'm confused about Tracy Emin being in that documentary. I don't have much time for her.

MadisonAvenue · 17/10/2017 12:51

Yes, I was surprised by Liam Gallagher when the sad news broke about George.

mydogisthebest · 17/10/2017 13:16

I couldn't bring myself to watch it but have recorded it. I used to play his music all the time but can't now without crying.

I saw him twice on the Live tour and he was absolutely brilliant, even better than I thought he would be. His voice was amazing and so beautiful. My DH, who isn't really a fan, came with me and was raving about his voice afterwards.

Christmas Day I was playing his music in the morning and singing along. I said to DH "I so hope George tours next year and we will be going" (there were rumours that he was going to tour again).

In the afternoon/evening one of my family was looking at their phone and said "George Michael has died". I got quite angry thinking they were joking so turned the tv on to see. When I saw it was true I just burst into tears.

Elendon · 17/10/2017 13:31

We have played Last Christmas every year since my ex and the children's father left - it was DD2 who suggested it. My daughter and I cried a lot on Christmas Day night.

I even put it on my Facebook page as the song of choice for Christmas - I'm partial to Fairytale of New York as well.

I couldn't bear to watch it.

hanahsaunt · 17/10/2017 13:34

Not a particular fan but found it fascinating. Not just moving but a real insight into a period of time - I was a young teenager through the late 80s and had no idea of the wider social issues he engaged with at the time e.g. being essentially blacklisted for being a white man winning prizes thought to belong to black people.

Elendon · 17/10/2017 13:42

It was also the last Christmas we spent in that house.

StorminaBcup · 17/10/2017 14:08

Me too Hanahsaunt - I thought he just collaborated with a few r&b singers but I didn’t really appreciate what he was doing at the time. I had no idea he had so much success state side.

MissEliza · 17/10/2017 14:30

As a teenager I liked George Michael but I never realised how talented he was, if that makes sense. His music really stands the test of time. I have to buy the Faith album now. I'm also another one whose not into concerts but would have loved to have seen him.
Isn't annoying (can't pick the right adjective) that such a mega star like him could be such a lovely human being when you see the way some famous people behave?
James Corden being on it was a bit pissing off especially after his 'jokes' about Harvey Weinstein.

yorkshireyummymummy · 17/10/2017 14:45

I have been quietly weeping on and off all day.
I can't stop the loop of songs playing in my head.
I can't bear the fact that he died alone on Christmas day.
I just hope hope hope that Anselmo came to get him.
Such a dreadful tragedy - it's almost like his struggle with being gay killed him. The saddest part of it is I'm sure if he had told his mum and his sisters about Anselmo they would have just accepted it. I can't believe they didn't know anyway. His mental Health problems which were heavily influenced by his struggle with his sexuality lead to his drug abuse and his poor heart just couldn't take it. Such a talent, thank goodness his music and the fact that he was such a bloody nice human being will be his legacy.
God I miss him.

2014newme · 17/10/2017 14:50

To write careless whisper age 18 is amazing.
Would have lived to see andrew, Pepsi and Shirley, Martin kemp etc on the programme rather than super models and liam.

EachandEveryone · 17/10/2017 14:58

I actually don’t know if I can face watching it now. I’m up at 6am fir work in morning having finished nights today. I need to sleep tonight and it sounds too emotional I might leave it for when I can have a glass of something.

2014 Did think it strange they were not involved - Pepsi and Shirley were not mentioned at all. I also found it strange that neither Kenny Goss nor his nearly dying in 2012 were mentioned. Apparently it was 'nearly finished' when he died - it didn't feel like that to me, there was a lot missing.

Floellabumbags · 17/10/2017 15:43

Andrew, Shirley and Martin have kept very quiet. I imagine they're respecting his privacy.

2014newme · 17/10/2017 15:51

Yes they appeared to at the baftas but they like their privacy. Understandable. Strange that George didn't involve them in the program when he was alive. Nobody is interested in in what kate moss thinks

Grammy78 · 17/10/2017 15:57

This covers a lot about why it was filmed as it was:

hanahsaunt · 17/10/2017 16:16

I think the lack of appreciation thing is because as a self-absorbed teenager I didn't realise that he was only 10 years older and in real terms was doing remarkable things with remarkable thought, clarity and assurity at a terribly young age: from writing Careless Whisper at 18 to taking on Sony in his late 20s. I have a new-found respect (as well as appreciation of a very lovely voice, again something which had essentially passed me by).

PolaDeVeboise · 17/10/2017 16:23

Thanks for that Grammy explains a lot.

NotAgainYoda · 17/10/2017 17:30

What an amazing talent. His music is such a big part of my teens and twenties

RIP George. You didn't deserve the disrespect you got

EachandEveryone · 17/10/2017 19:19

Ive decided not to watch it tonight im interested to know why pepsi and shirley werent in it though if it was made whilst he was alive,

I have recorded and will watch when I am alone because I know I'll cry.

GM was the soundtrack to the eighties, to the nineties and beyond.

What a voice. What a beautiful self deprecating man. A generous, funny soul who was much misunderstood.

How lucky was I to see him perform live.

ForalltheSaints · 17/10/2017 19:32

I can't pretend I ever was a fan, but he was born 10 days before me, and to think of someone my age not still alive makes me sad, especially knowing the pleasure he gave to millions.

BuzzKillington · 17/10/2017 19:36

Was never a fan, but this thread has made me want to watch it.

honeyroar · 17/10/2017 21:25

We are now watching the concert that was on afterwards. His voice is just top class, he never misses a note or strains, just pure quality.

There were a lot of people not in that documentary that I'd have expected to be in it. Perhaps they would have been if George had finished it? Who knows.

Trailedanderror · 17/10/2017 21:31
Sad He was obviously such a lovely man.
