CAUTION - HERE BE DRAGONS (PROBABLY) AND SPOILERS!

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 7 "THE DRAGON AND THE WOLF"

Come and discuss the very last episode in the penultimate series, airing August 27th at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6.

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones.

I think the shot of Jaime putting a glove back on his golden hand was meant to be symbolic. He was 'covering' his golden Lannister heritage with all its dishonourable connotations. Also by covering his 'sword' hand he was casting off his old 'kingslayer' infamy in the hope of recovering his lost honour by keeping his word to Danyerys to fight the white walkers.

I thought it was just a means of showing the snow had started to fall?!

Sam would be a much better Hand than Arya.

You need someone who's willing to sit with a bunch of books and scrolls and do boring but necessary admin, to turn royal decrees into reality, and to counsel as to what's realistic or affordable.

The King eats, the Hand takes the shit.

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 01/09/2017 11:47

Arya would surely be queensguard?

Trills · 01/09/2017 11:52

Yes!
And Brienne is in charge of the army. (top general - what's the word?)

QueenoftheAndals · 01/09/2017 12:03

Sam would be a much better Hand than Arya.

I'm wondering where Sam's storyline is going. He's no longer in the Nights Watch so his vows don't apply and he's seen that the Maesters are total shams so he doesn't want that anymore either. I hope he doesn't sacrifice himself to save Jon, or anything like that, and survives to marry Gilly and become head of House Tarly.

John Bradley is the master of reactions on the show too - his "ooh?" in response to finding out Bran's the 3 Eyed Raven was priceless!

AryaUnderfoot · 01/09/2017 12:18

Sam, Gilly and the 'baby that doesn't age' are the three characters almost guaranteed to survive the series, because:

Samwell = Samwise

Samwell = GRRM

It is known.

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 01/09/2017 12:38

I assume that in asoiaf she will keep dalla's baby when she gets baby sam back?

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 01/09/2017 12:38

(When they get back from the quick trip to the citadel)

AryaUnderfoot · 01/09/2017 12:45

I think she'll keep Dalla's baby (I think she wants to call him Aemon Steelsong). I can't see her getting her own baby back if the Wall falls some time during Winds of Winter.

OlennasWimple · 01/09/2017 15:00

Has Show Sam actually left the NW? He's all but broken his vows by effectively taking a wife and fathering a child (I know not technically, but as near as damn it), but he isn't the only NW who has played fast and loose with the vows, as the Molestown brothel could attest.

Arya isn't Hand material - I'm hoping that Davos will survive and be the sage advisor to whoever ends up ruing either the north or the seven kingdoms. Tyrion might not make it through, I have a suspicion - maybe all three Lannister siblings die

Sam is currently a deserter but, then again, so is Jon Snow. Technically Jon Snow's Watch ended when he died but his reluctance to share his death and resurrection with the rest of the Realm should mean he's seen as a deserter.

I suppose the fact that there's likely to be no Wall going forward and no Wildlings north of it means there's going to be no Night's Watch.

Who elected Dolorous Edd to LC anyway?

OlennasWimple · 01/09/2017 15:23

I think it's ambiguous whether Sam is a deserter: he was sent to the Citadel; didn't get approval to leave the Citadel, but did go to Winterfell rather than just disappear. So I reckon he could argue that he was still serving the NW by making sure that all the information on the Long Night was relayed to them ASAP

More people should be questioning why Jon isn't still LC, really. Especially as we saw what Ned did to a NW deserter in the very first episode.

The wonderful Edd was given temporary charge when Jon left, and although we haven't seen it in my head they have held a formal election process and confirmed his appointment. Smile

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 01/09/2017 15:26

Well, I guess sam has arrived as the wall is coming down, so though he technically is currently a deserter (though he could perhaps argue that he needed to inform current LC no one else has been elected, have they? of his return) he won't be for much longer!

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 01/09/2017 15:26

X post about edd Grin

AryaUnderfoot · 01/09/2017 15:32

Edd for the Iron Throne!

OlennasWimple · 01/09/2017 15:34

There was a filmed scene which filled in the blanks a bit about how Sansa realised that LF was trying to cause a rift between her and Arya, but it didn't make the final edit. Which is a shame, because we had to make a load of assumptions that the conversation had happened.

OP posts:
jonsnowsbuttocks · 01/09/2017 16:18

It's so obvious when it is explained but they make a good point about it being like cutting the gendry running back to the wall scene.

bluegrape · 01/09/2017 16:41

Has the significance of the direwolves already been discussed?

Jon - Ghost seems pretty obvious, as does Sansa-Lady.
I'm wondering whether Bran does something that ends the Winter, as his direwolf was Summer.

As I'm a saddo, I've googled Nymeria who was a warrior queen with connections to the Martells and Essos. I wonder if there's an Ayra/Martell/Golden Company storyline next season.

NotYoonique · 01/09/2017 17:51

Nymeria led a great army, Wolf Nymeria is doing the same

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 01/09/2017 18:49

Summer dying showed that winter had returned.

Rickon and shaggy dog: Apparently a "shaggy dog story" is a long and complicated story with no actual point at the end

JAPAB · 01/09/2017 18:57

Has the significance of the direwolves already been discussed?

I've mentioned that I suspect the fates of the wolf and the Stark are linked, and by the end I think if the wolf is alive the Stark will be, and if dead the Stark will be.

As for the names, interesting thought but what would be the significance of Shaggydog and Grey Wind.

AryaUnderfoot · 01/09/2017 18:58

Robb and Grey Wind - Robb died because he broke a vow to Walder Frey, but in the words of Jaime Lannister "vows are words and words are wind".

AryaUnderfoot · 01/09/2017 19:00

Shaggydog is wild and untamed and so will be Rickon when he returns from Skagos.

Summer and Shaggydog (and Rickon) are still alive in the books.

AryaUnderfoot · 01/09/2017 19:04

Now I'm really depressed though.

I just watched the Hound's trial with Beric Dondarion from season 3 to see if Aegon's and Rhaenys' names were mentioned. During the entire conversation (quite lengthy) between the Hound and his accusers he said "bloody well get on with it" once and didn't use the words "fuck" or "cunt" once. The reason why - because that dialogue is a shortened version of the conversation in the books.

The Hound's dialogue this season has just turned into a load of meme inspring awful one-liners. Oh well. Sad
