Is anyone watching on channel 4?

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 18/08/2017 08:26

"If you have a child with an ability, help them."

Yep. If your child looks as if the have the ability to learn the London Trqnsport system by heart, help them! Hmm

CremeFresh · 18/08/2017 10:04

I thought that some of the children presented with autistic traits along with Rahuls father . I'm all for encouraging children but this just seems to be for the parent's benefit.

MoonfaceAndSilky · 18/08/2017 12:03

I can't work out how having a good memory makes you a genius. Every single round, bar the maths one, have just been memorising things, even the science round. Surely the questions should be more like the ones you get in an IQ test like the symbols ones or what comes next in a sequence?
I think some of the parents are awful and I only watch it to see what Rahul's sister's doll is wearing Grin

MyPatronusIsAUnicorn · 18/08/2017 12:49

steppemum is it Mog? I remember him from last year (the first time I watched it) and he had taught himself lots of languages. He was lovely and I really wanted him to win.

I was talking to DS just now about this (he wants to watch it) and I asked him if he thinks I am a pushy parent. He said yes! Grin I told him he has no idea and he needs to watch the programme. I do push a bit because I know he is intelligent but bloody lazy and would do the bare minimum for homework every time. He wants to do his 11+ which is fine but we have a couple of practice books recommended to do before he starts his tutoring and I have made him do them and he thinks this is me being pushy. Like a pp said, I was reasonably clever at school and never ever pushed, at school or at home and left with ok grades but nothing great. I know I could have done better but I was also lazy and left everything to the last minute and didn't revise much for my exams, did the bare minimum so I do want to push DS a bit because I can see he is like me, but not to the extent of the parents on CG, it made me laugh when DS said I was pushy.

Moanyoldcow · 18/08/2017 13:02

Interesting you said that creme - my son is 4 and seems very bright academically and has a phenomenal memory and there is some suspicion he has some autistic traits and some of the kids here reminded me of him.

My son isn't a genius though and I've no desire for him to be one!

Also the mum of one of the very shy girls. She's a teacher. Her difficulty in maintaining eye contact was quite painful to watch.

ggirl · 18/08/2017 17:12

The amount of energy these parents put into this exhausts me..

I quite like Fabio's mum despite her pushiness .

I feel like the laziest parent on earth when I watch this.

jay55 · 18/08/2017 20:57

Nerissa's mum is scary.

quencher · 18/08/2017 21:28

Yep. If your child looks as if the have the ability to learn the London Trqnsport system by heart, help them! This so petty and unnecessary. I doubt most of those parents make their children learn every tube and bus map. We all know why they did and do it on the show.

Ceto · 18/08/2017 23:06

Not too keen on the way Rahul looks increasingly pissed off whenever any other child does well.

Procrastination4 · 18/08/2017 23:09

Naffedoff I was rooting for Thomas to win all the way through Series 15. His family seemed a very normal, supportive family, and there seemed to be a nice dynamic between him and his step dad and step siblings. He himself came across as naturally highly intelligent rather than being hothoused by pushy parents.
I was really pleased when he won!

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 19/08/2017 03:15

Yep, there's just something about him thats most off putting.

AliceInReality · 19/08/2017 09:19

Just catching up on this. I hate seeing children crying but I can't denounce the thing.

I think academic completions are great and we should have more than just child genius... maybe a spelling bee and math challenges or problem solving shows.

There is so much judgement about the parents but bored right children are a recipe for disaster - I wish we got DSS in this.

Cagliostro · 19/08/2017 11:03

I binge watched the entire thing last night!

There is only one child I find really likeable this time - Joshua. Rahul seemed sweet at first but I agree the way he looks so pissed off when others get questions right is far from endearing. I also absolutely hated his "I don't want to discuss my defeat" reaction when he got beaten by one point. It came across as really arrogant to me.

As a home educator I found the Theo bit really cringeworthy. Especially the defensive "well if THAT'S what they teach in school..." Hmm ugh. Gives HE a bad name!

MyPatronusIsAUnicorn · 19/08/2017 16:32

Unfortunately Rahul is very much a product of his Father's upbringing. It's very clear that he is fully expected to win and nothing less will do.

RTKangaMummy · 19/08/2017 17:06

We are watching here too

The parents who push their children SadSadSadSad

The children that want to do it themselves SmileSmileSmileSmile

Davros · 19/08/2017 17:18

Nerissa's mother says she put her into CG to improve her confidence. Oh, and what seems to have happened? The poor girl seems crushed and has lost what little confidence she had Hmm

LetZygonsbeZygones · 19/08/2017 18:18

Nerissa is far too shy, self-conscious and lacking in confidence for this show to have achieved what her mother hoped it would for her. You could see she was so miserable, uncomfortable and at times broken, it was horrible to see.

And if Fabios mother is not pushy the I'm an alien from planet zog. Being from an immigrant family myself where education was seen as a way out of often grim circumstances, I recognise some of the attitudes of some of the parents on the show. Yes education IS important but so is a childhood.

Cagliostro · 19/08/2017 18:26

I didn't like Aaliyah's/her mother's attitude either TBH

Petalflowers · 19/08/2017 18:57

Also just googled Thomas but recognised him straight away. He was one of the natural children who, parents supported his ability, rather than pushed him. I was glad he won.

I've watched this Child a Genius since the start, and find it hideous and fascinating at the same time. Can't believe they are still making them wear their names around their necks. Who's idea was that?

My teens love this programme also. I like them watching it because it doesn't make me look like a pushy mother?

I'm routing for Joshua to win. He seems fairly, rounded. My dcs don't like Rahol (so?) as they find his attitude annoying. he wasn't happy that Ronan did well in the science round.

Looking forward to,the final tonight.

Fekko · 19/08/2017 19:25

I felt very sorry for Nerissa. She seemed to be going along with it to please her mum. The attitude of not winning because she didn't believe in herself is pretty horrible - so not because it was a bad round or she forgot the answer or the other kids were a bit better - because she didn't believe I herself enough.

There are 2 boys in the race who are nice kids and seem like they are genuine little boffins and not hothouse crammed.

I'm not sure if Fabios parents are immigrants - just desperate for their kids to annihilate everyone else. I'd hate to be up against his mum in the parents race on sports day!

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 19/08/2017 19:48

i dont think they are.

And Fabio's mum would have you exhausted on the start line just listening to her. There quite simply wouldn't be a race Grin

RTKangaMummy · 19/08/2017 20:00

I said to DH last night that I wondered which of the children would have a happier home life if they won or lost the title

Would the pushy parents be worse afterwards if their child won?

CremeFresh · 19/08/2017 20:11

Most of this competition is just a memory test . Hardly a way to test for genius.

RTKangaMummy · 19/08/2017 20:12

I mean would they be satisfied with winning or just keep on about the questions they passed or got wrong?

Like if they are told their child got top marks in exam with 98% and A* but they are still on about the 2% the child got wrong SadSadSad
