WARNING: HERE BE DRAGONS (probably) AND SPOILERS

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 3 "THE QUEEN'S JUSTICE"

Come and discuss the third episode in the penultimate series, airing July 31st at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6

HBO description of the episode: Daenerys holds court. Cersei returns a gift. Jaime learns from his mistakes.

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones Smile

Elena I see your point about the Iron Bank and the slave trade.

My initial problem with that scene was the fact that Cersei says something along the lines of "House Lannister is in debt to the Iron Bank"' My understanding was that it was the crown that was in debt to the Iron Bank. Hosue Lannister's finances should be a separate issue.

If House Lannister is so broke and the gold mines have run dry, why are they still managing to be the 'seat of power' in Westeros? Why would Tyrion bother to take Casterly Rock?

Has the rest of House Lannister just ceased to exist and it's just Cersei and Jaime now? If House Lannister owes the Iron Bank then they will still owe the bank even if Cersei is usurped and Dany put on the Iron throne.

Show logic just has to be accepted....

yumyum thank you Grin. I am going to do some work today...

badabing36 · 03/08/2017 09:30

Delurking to say that gold is definitely not getting to the iron banker, could the brotherhood raid them? Or someone else? Will that be cersei's downfall? Seems like realistically it would be, I don't think that's dramatic enough for the show.

Thanks for all the book knowledge, I've read them once but obviously a lot went over my head.

AryaUnderfoot · 03/08/2017 09:44

badabing36 not to give too much away but if you watch the official HBO GoT trailer for season 7 it will give you a pretty big clue as to what's going to happen to the loot from Highgarden.

BWB are about 1500 miles to the north and are heading entirely in the wrong direction. Plus, there are only about a dozen of them so would have no chance of taking on the Lannister army.

badabing36 · 03/08/2017 09:55

Oh OK then will watch the trailer again. Oh yeah, forgot they were heading north Blush.

rollonthesummer · 03/08/2017 10:20

I struggle to see what's what in those trailers -they are so fast! Who is chucked onto the beach-is it Gendry?!

Can someone give me a bigger clue to what happens to the Highgarden loot-I can't tell from that?! PM maybe if no clue can be easily given!!

christmasunicorn · 03/08/2017 10:59

spoilers for episode 4 rumour has it the script was stolen

AryaUnderfoot · 03/08/2017 11:03

I have pm'd you. Don't read it if you don't like spoilers!

MyOtherProfile · 03/08/2017 11:51

I can't tell anything from the trailers either. Too dark and too fast.

FanwankTheAbsurd · 03/08/2017 12:28

The episode trailer plus a scene from the series trailer gives me much joy. Cersei isn't getting that gold.

squishysquirmy · 03/08/2017 12:28

Elena "Just watching the show. The Iron Bank would not finance the slave trade! Braavos was funded by slaves fleeing the Valyrian dragonlords. They were in hiding for thousands of years."

Its not impossible to imagine that a city/nation might betray its founding principles though, is it? Especially after thousands of years have passed, and money is involved.

BriennetheBeauty · 03/08/2017 12:31

rollonthesummer I originally thought it was Gendry but on rewatching several times and pausing - I think it's Pod

AryaUnderfoot · 03/08/2017 12:41

Pod is going to be Lord Commander of the Kingsguard one day.

He and Samwell are the only people guaranteed to survive the series. As long as I don't have to read about any more 'fat pink masts' I will be ok.

squishysquirmy · 03/08/2017 12:45

That's interesting Arya.
I often wonder whether characters like Samwell are the ones an author like GRRM identifies with most - bookish, clever people rather than action heroes. Maybe that strengthens their plot armour.

rollonthesummer · 03/08/2017 12:56

As long as I don't have to read about any more 'fat pink masts' I will be ok.

Is that a willy reference?!

ElenaGreco123 · 03/08/2017 13:10

Yes. GRRM is truly awful at writing sex scenes.

squishy You are right about betraying principles, but there are a lot of conspiracy theories about Braavos, the Iron Bank, the Faceless Men, Arya's purpose and Jaqen's mission to Westeros.
Plus Braavos was funded thousands of years ago, but the Doom of Valyria was only 400 (?) year ago. Some think the Doom was volcanic eruption, but others think the Braavosi were somehow involved.

Arya They really did not consider economics for the show.

I am glad I am not the only one who read the spoilers in the papers Blush

Another thing I hated was when the Archmaester called Sam "Tarly". He has lost his surname when he entered the Citadel. Half the fan theories centre on where the various masters loyalties lie. It took us ages to learn Maester Aemon's true identity.

AryaUnderfoot · 03/08/2017 13:13

Is that a willy reference?!

Erm, yes Blush. When Sam and Gilly first 'do it' on the boat from Braavos, there is a reference to his 'manhood' sticking up like a fat pink mast. I'm not sure if GRRM wants his smut scenes to be arousing, but they generally aren't!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/08/2017 13:14

I read the spoilers! If true - so pleased by one of the things!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/08/2017 13:17

Ewww at fat pink mast! Where is Gilly these days - hanging around in Oldtown somewhere? Has the show deviated from the baby storyline? (Which I can't remember clearly - something about the baby Gilly leaves with is not actually Little Sam - in which case where is he?)

WingMirrorSpider · 03/08/2017 13:17

Yeah I've read the spoilers too (and for all of the rest of this series) Wish I hadn't but looking forward to a good last few eps.

AryaUnderfoot · 03/08/2017 13:20

X-posted Elena - great minds think alike!

The economics of Braavos vs the feudal system of Westeros has not really been explored in the show at all other than in the odd passing reference. Littlefinger being Braavosi by origin and despising the systems of lords and ruling families based on birthright is only briefly touched upon.

I love Tyrion's quote - the Lannisters dig their gold out of the ground but LIttlefinger weaves his out of thin air.

I would have loved to see Alleras the Sphinx at the Citadel, but that's just me.

AryaUnderfoot · 03/08/2017 13:28

Has the show deviated from the baby storyline?

In a word, yes. Long story but here goes....

In the book Mance Rayder's partner (Dalla) has a baby boy and then dies. Baby is looked after by her sister, Val. Melissandre wants to burn Mance's baby as he has king's blood. When Jon sends Sam off to Oldtown he sends Gilly as well but the baby he sends with her is Mance's baby and not her own. Neither baby is given a name as it's really unlucky for wildlings to name their babies too young. I think she refers to Mance's baby as Monster.

Sam doesn't realise why Gilly is so upset at leaving the Wall and cries every time she feeds the baby. Maestro Aemon (still alive at the time) points out to Sam that the baby isn't hers.

We later see the convo between Jon and Gilly from Jon's perspective. He persuades Gilly to take Mance's baby by telling her that Mel intends to sacrifice him. Gilly initially refuses but Jon threatens that if she refuses then he will burn Gilly's baby if Mel burns Mance's (in not so many words). Jon is devastated to make the threat but he's starting to figure out that the price of command is a high one.

ElenaGreco123 · 03/08/2017 13:33

I know Jon is meant for Dany, but I'd love to see him getting together with Val.

AryaUnderfoot · 03/08/2017 13:36

So would I Elena. The Willdling Princess is just perfect for Jon... Sad

Middleoftheroad · 03/08/2017 18:06

Off topic (sorry)

Watched a film on iplayer today. Another disappointing Simon Pegg film called 'Man Up'
Sam Tarly is in it (well the actor). It's basically Sam as a waiter....

Just read spoilers. One part, to do with next week's trailer underneath Dragonstone, fascinates me.

Middleoftheroad · 03/08/2017 20:05

I was also looking to refresh my knowledge of the Long Night and came across this article. It also got me thinking whether we'll see Benjen again?
