I go to work and this is what happens: the previous thread fills up when I have pertinent things to say! ShockWink

Hope nobody minds, I've taken the opportunity to start a new one before the Offspring demand food and the likes...

One of the masterful strikes of strategic genius of the new regime is the division and envy between everybody and everybody: men vs women, women in different roles vs other women, high ranking vs low ranking.
No solidarity is allowed - even the partnered Handmaids were half companion and have guard. Never knowing who might be an Eye and who to trust must be soul destroying.

I think Serena is quite a tragic figure - in the book and in the TV series. She must feel so betrayed by the ideals she fought for and that she is now kind of forced to uphold because otherwise what would her life be?? Admitting that she supporting a world view that while giving her some kind of social status by dint of her husband's role, considers her without value as she cannot have children would render everything she stands for invalid, and herself by extension.

The author who wrote a book about women being able to electrocute men by touch thereby causing a power change over (sorry, I cannot remember either name Blush) was talking on Radio Scotland today. She said the idea for her book came from when she wondered why so many mechanisms in society seem to go back to the fact that 'more men can throw a woman across a room than the other way around'. It's a depressing thought that physical strength underpins so much.

Better doesn't mean better for everyone.

Yeah, but you're doing pretty well out of it aren't you, Commander?

What an evil sanctimonious prick.

EvilTwins · 25/06/2017 23:34

I'm kind of glad that the commander showed his true colours this episode. I did wonder if they had deliberately cast a younger, quite attractive actor as a way to make him a more sympathetic character but now we know what he really thinks there is no way he can be seen in that way.

I'm loving this series so much!

ellenanora5 · 26/06/2017 00:06

Haven't been on the thread since the beginning because there ended up being a few and I was getting confused so hope you don't mind me joining this one.

I think they have done a great job with the series, its bloody disturbing but fascinating at the same time.

I wouldn't imagine the aunt who escaped was Moira because the time between that happening and offred being sent to the Waterfords would be quite a while I imagine.

Also in the first week offred asks at the execution (sorry can't remember what its called) where she is and Janine says she was sent to the colonies, so I've always presumed she was caught and sent back to be trained ( cant think of a better word sorry) as a handmaiden and she broke the rules again so was sent away

Of course I could be completely wrong, I probably am, great thread by the way.

CloudNinetyNine · 26/06/2017 00:10

I assumed Janine said Moira was dead because she is going insane. I'm hoping she is alive and we see her again.

CeeBeeBee · 26/06/2017 00:16

Is ondemand down this evening? Tried earlier on and got nothing and tried now and still nothing. :(

SomethingOnce · 26/06/2017 01:07

Marking my place - apologies, it took me until tonight to realise the old thread was so quiet because it was full Blush

Choccywoccyhooha · 26/06/2017 01:07

I don't think the new Ofglen is being treated well, it's just that in comparison to her former life, she has a roof over her head, and food on the table. Plus she is scared that if she were to lose her position she will be sent to the colonies.

LottieandMia · 26/06/2017 06:03

I think that although the commander showed his true colours in this episode, his views actually were also shown to be hypocritical nonsense because on one hand he's saying nobody needs love and the sex ritual makes it all a lot easier and less complicated for women to 'fulfill' their 'true' purpose but then he's trying to spice up his own ritual a bit and get more emotionally involved because he finds it 'impersonal'.

My thoughts re: Emily were that her new commander's wife realises that she has been through a lot and that sex might be painful so she's trying to spare her but she won't be able to do this forever.

PacificDogwod · 26/06/2017 07:26

It was a difficult viewing last night and I am still digesting Sad

What happened to the old Offglen/now OffSteven after she was dragged out of the car? Was she shot?!

OP posts:
CruCru · 26/06/2017 07:40

I should think she was hanged.

noblegiraffe · 26/06/2017 07:43

Have we seen any women hanged on the wall?

Bodypumpaddict · 26/06/2017 07:49

This is such excellent telly.
So thought provoking.
So many different interpretations to be made.
So clever.

EBearhug · 26/06/2017 08:15

Have we seen any women hanged on the wall

No, only on the crane.

TizzyDongue · 26/06/2017 08:19

I was wondering where the handmaid's names came from; only when I ready Ofsteven did it dawn on me.

BeyondOfbob · 26/06/2017 08:21

It doesn't help that out loud they call her off-red rather than of-fred

motmot · 26/06/2017 09:10

There was definitely a hooded figure in a skirt who had been hung in last night's episode.

I normally hate waiting for episodes the old fashioned way, but I feel I need a week in between to absorb everything. Loathe the adverts though!

53rdWay · 26/06/2017 09:25

I thought old Ofglen/Emily was shot. Didn't we hear a gunshot?

7Days · 26/06/2017 09:36

It was interesting when you hear better is never better for everyone and then you hear about new Ofglens old life. Compared to being a street prostitute with a drug addiction, maybe she is one of those for whom things are better. So that is another group of women who are prepared to comply with the regime. Or rather make the best of it.
Also aren't the handmaids speaking much more freely to each other now that in earlier episodes?

7Days · 26/06/2017 09:47

Regarding June and Luke's affair, that shows that June was never really a feminist or politically engaged, as such. She was enjoying her life but complacent about women's rights. Never expecting they could be snatched away. Like many - most? - people she was rather disengaged until it was too late

pixieg1rl · 26/06/2017 09:57

Spoiler alert 🚨**

There will be another series of Handmaid's Tale. Alexis Bledel (Ofglen/Ofsteven) will be in it. I'm all la-la-la I'm not listening about any of the details. This is a departure from the book where she hung her self when she heard The Eyes coming for her.

ShoesHaveSouls · 26/06/2017 10:00

Yes, 7days, that's what I always thought from the book too.

Batteriesallgone · 26/06/2017 10:45

I wonder what happened to people like Luke's first wife in the new regime? Wonder if they had kids. Wonder if she's eligible for remarriage or not. Would be shit if she ended up a Handmaid too because of a cheating husband

pixieg1rl · 26/06/2017 10:53

I am missing June's mother in the adaptation. She added another voice to things, a second wave feminism perspective. She reminds me very much of the mum of one of my friends; she fascinating to listen to, and is very black and white about some things. I liked how June would reflect on what her mother would make of Gilead; how parts of it were a distortion of a world she had wanted.

noblegiraffe · 26/06/2017 10:59

Do the Marthas get a name or are they just Martha?

It struck me last night that Nick might be a servant, not even given a wife but at least he has a name.

CloudNinetyNine · 26/06/2017 11:29

I asked earlier in the thread but don't think anyone has answered - do the wives get given a name too? Is Serena Joy her original name?
