geekgrrl · 20/03/2007 09:49

it's really not that relevant in all fairness though, Makaton is completely different from BSL.

(and to those of you who complain how much you hate this programme - please consider yourselves fortunate that your children can enjoy and understand any ordinary children's programme - I'm so pleased that the BBC have made a TV show that my dd2 can fully access)

Biglips · 20/03/2007 09:51

its not far off of the swear word in BSL that justin is using

im signing back "You naughty boy!!"

Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 09:52

I love something special. It helped my slow speaking DD start to communicate (ok mainly about ducks, but it was something).

Isn't that article pretty much akin to watching something in german and saying "ha ha - he called an egg an eye!!"?

MegaLegs · 20/03/2007 10:09

I'm being dippy - I am learning Makaton with DS4 and at our singing and signing group we sing "If you're happy and you know it." For 'happy' we have been shown that you put left hand on side, thumb straight up and then brush up the top of the fingers and up to the top of the thumb twice as you say happy. So is that 'happy' or 'f**k'. ( The group already do the wrong sign for diamond in twinkle twinkle, the sign they use means fanjo in BSL IIRC.)

Marina · 20/03/2007 10:09

Even I know Makaton is totally different from BSL and have no situation in my life requiring the use of either. Something Special is a unique programme, this is all a bit silly of the Sun, and dare I say it, the RNID, although I bet that quote from them is out of context.
We love Justin in our house - he is a national treasure IMO.
Learning some Makaton is fun and potentially useful for all children whether they need it or not

TheBlonde · 20/03/2007 10:57

geekgrrl - to be fair it's not the programme more the presenter that I don't like
Justin is not a fave in our house

makaton is different to BSL. and makaton is used for children with learning idfferculties, speech problems etc andf that is mainly who the show is for, not just children who are deaf. the back of the DVD states it uses makaton, not BSL.

so really is a pointless article.

MrsPhilipGlenister · 20/03/2007 11:52

How can anyone complain about Something Special??

My little DS3 (2.8, temp dx of social communication disorder) adores it and tries to copy Justin when it is on.

Enid · 20/03/2007 12:00

we love justin

and something special was dd2s favourite programme until she started refusign to allow cbeebies on AT ALL in case she saw the Number jacks

MrsPhilipGlenister · 20/03/2007 12:05

DS2 is obsessed with numberjacks!! 'Tis very strange...

Enid · 20/03/2007 12:06

dd2 literally wet her pants last time she saw it

Enid · 20/03/2007 12:06

in fear

AitchYouBerk · 20/03/2007 12:06

i loooove justin.

DeputyMacDawg · 20/03/2007 12:07

Can't believe even 'the Sun' is making this into an issue.
Articles like this make me sad because this is the only show where children see any Makaton.
My dd loves to watch it and is starting to sign along with Justin.
Makaton is not the same as BSL. Hope the RNID comments have been taken out of context

foxinsocks · 20/03/2007 12:08

ooh there's something on numberjacks that freaks ds out - it's the thing that floats in the air (whatever it is)

DeputyMacDawg · 20/03/2007 12:09

If you think Numberjacks is freaky...have you seen 'In the Night Garden'????

MadameWeb · 20/03/2007 12:12

i love something special, and justin! hes fab!

HEIFER · 20/03/2007 12:19

I thought the shock headline was going to be that Mr Tumle had found someone to tumble with..

Justin - yucky you not to by bovine taste.

Although at least he could go downstairs and play with the children whilst you had a apres shag nap...

Enid · 20/03/2007 12:27

that'll be the Problem Blob foxy

it finished dd2 poor lamb

foxinsocks · 20/03/2007 12:33

poor dd2

ds is 5 and still won't watch it - luckily they have outgrown cbeebies now, so no chance of accidentally catching it and causing terror (poor ds - he used to run away and hide and then insist on being cuddled till he felt better!)

AitchYouBerk · 20/03/2007 13:03

the problem blob scares the shit out of me. it is frightening.
