numberjacks is AWFUL

Piffle · 20/03/2007 13:07

I laughed my arse of at this story!

pollypeachum · 20/03/2007 13:14

justin is a hero in our house. we even like higgledy house.

but god help me what dd (4) really loves is:-

numberjacks
me too (flaming "granny" murray is younger than me)
nina and the neurons
barney (argh)
and, as of last night, the night garden or whatever its called.

on the other had she is scared by and won't watch any disney cartoon film

but i can't say that tv hasn't had its beneficial effects. the other day we were talking and she said i know what an orangutang is. i said i bet you don't and she said yes a kind of monkey, so is a gorilla. i know they aren't monkeys but apes but i thought it close enough and was just congratulating self on astute choice of school, which was clearly educating her well, so asked in a rhetorical sort of way, who told you that? expecting the reply to be mrs so and so her teacher. the answer was boogie beebies.

Spidermama · 20/03/2007 13:20

I'm not a Justin fan.

He's not beyond reproach as some would seem to think and should certainly be called to account for this gaffe. And it is a gaffe.

PMSL btw.

geekgrrl · 20/03/2007 13:29

why is JF responsible for the Makaton sign for 'happy' looking similar to the BSL sign for 'f*ck'?

As FS pointed out so well, Makaton and BSL are two different languages.

And besides, SS has been on TV for about 3 years now - if it was that well known and outrageous, wouldn't someone have pointed it out before?

AitchYouBerk · 20/03/2007 13:34

but i've explained about granny murray... honestly you lot just don't listen.

it was originally filmed for a month with isla st clair, but she backed out cos she couldn't handle the pace. so they brought that irritating actress in on no notice but had to keep the other bits that had been filmed with her name 'granny murray'.

why they didn't stick a grey wig on her is a mystery i grant you.

weepootleflump · 20/03/2007 13:34

We love Justin in our house. My dd is mesmerised by every program he is in. I think he's by far the best childrens entertainer on telly - he really looks like he loves what he does.

AitchYouBerk · 20/03/2007 13:34

and pmsl at justin being 'beyond reproach'.

MrsPhilipGlenister · 20/03/2007 13:38

Saw him filming in the pouring rain in our local park last year, as part of the CBeebies Springwatch thing. Top bloke.

lissielou · 20/03/2007 13:38

pmsl!! i love justin, he's fab!

Notquitegrownup · 20/03/2007 13:42

We saw The Night Garden too DeputyMacDawg. AAaaaagaggggghhhhhhhhh! DS2 was transfixed. He'll grow out of it soon.

Awaiting the outraged MN threads, once it has been more widely discovered.

foxinsocks · 20/03/2007 13:44

is it new (In the Night Garden), I haven't heard of it before - I'm relieved mine have outgrown cbeebies

Notquitegrownup · 20/03/2007 13:50

Brand new and appalling

2shoes · 20/03/2007 14:15

geekgrrl well said. I get angry when people slag of something special. dd loves it as it has disable children like her in it.

booge · 20/03/2007 14:23

?Makaton is used more for children with learning difficulties ? it is essentially a different language.?

Errm isn't that who Something Special is for too, what a pointless article.

We love Justin too.

Housemum · 21/03/2007 18:49

Mr Tumble is just great - I have no "need" to watch Something Special other than I think it's great DD2 can enjoy a programme which (please don't think I'm patronising) exposes her to seeing other children she may not come into contact with in daily life.

I can clearly remember my mum (I hate to say this) turning off the telly in the 70's when a programme for people with disabilities came on, saying "you don't need to see that sort". It was pure ignorance, probably from down the family line - Nan worked with "them wrong-uns" in the 1920s in an institution. Wonder what she would make of my cousins both working with SN kids and my DD1 having epilepsy?

pooka · 21/03/2007 20:19

I love something special - as do ds and dd. They are both NT with no special needs, but it's such a friendly programme and dd (3.5) is learning some sign language at pre-school so likes copying Justin.

pooka · 21/03/2007 20:20

Oh and the songs are great as is the webpage on the cbeebies website.

MascaraOHara · 21/03/2007 20:22

I luv Justin

Aloha · 21/03/2007 20:23

Not a gaffe to use Makaton signs!
I think it's brilliant that there is a programme made to suit children with special needs. Why do those morons think it is called Something Special??

morningpaper · 21/03/2007 20:24

hmm spidermama I always get the feeling that you know some norty gossip about children's tv presenters

lol lol
I'm a salt and use a lot of Makaton.
I will print out for the other salts.

One of my colleagues went on a sexual health/protection course.
She is a rather repressed m/c middle ages woman and was beside herself with joy at how many earthy expressions she had learnt in Makaton which she insisted on demonstating at every opportunity.

i think it was a hugely liberating experience forh her.

BandofMothers · 21/03/2007 20:25

They know it's only a confusion between the 2, and I think they're trying to cause trouble. I think Justin is great. He does so many things for kids and I'll be if they F up his career over something stupid like this!!!!!

Hulababy · 21/03/2007 20:26

I like the programme - think it is a great idea.

And agree with all those who say that this isn't a gaffe. Makaton is used for a very good reason on this programme. It doesn't use BSL as it isn't specifically aimed at deaf children - CBeebies does that at anothe rtime.

Bit of a non story really TBH, once you realise that Makaton is deliberately being used, and for a very valid reason.
