Anyone else planning on watching this at 9pm on channel 4?

OP posts:

It was Margaret Atwood. There was an article in the Telegraph about this serialisation.

superking · 28/05/2017 22:24

I really enjoyed it. Read it about ten years ago and liked it/ admired it but didn't really connect with the story on a personal level, it seemed a bit sci fi. I connected much more with this adaptation. Looking forward to next week.

Chillyegg · 28/05/2017 22:24

That was absolutely great. So gripping and bloody emotive! Its bloody scary stuff! Im going to order the book

Blondielongie · 28/05/2017 22:25

I haven't watched yet. It's recoreded so I can watch tomorrow without adverts.

I know the commander and his wife were cast with young actors so the viewers would see more of a rivalry between offred and the wife. (Offred? The main one..?.Ah haven't read it in years)

StorminaBcup · 28/05/2017 22:26

I haven't read the book and I have a really short attention span when it comes to tv drama but I thought this was excellent. I just hope they get the sound sorted for the next episode or I'll have to pull up the subtitles.

AnyFucker · 28/05/2017 22:29

That was brilliantly chilling

My favourite novel by my favourite author

RebornSlippy · 28/05/2017 22:30

Loved it. Really gripped me. Can't believe it's over 10 flipping weeks though.

Nocarbsorsugar · 28/05/2017 22:30

Fantastic. And for an oldish novel how very appropriate for modern times.
Couldn't watch some of it though.

MistyMinge · 28/05/2017 22:37

Was very good. Tough viewing in places though. Annoyed that I've never read the book. May have to order it.

PawsandWhiskers · 28/05/2017 22:43

I thought it was superb - harrowing and horrifying but superb - really liked how the book had been adapted. But bloody terrifying how relevant it seems at this particular moment in history though....

Lessthanaballpark · 28/05/2017 22:43

Aaaaggggh I didn't even know it was in. Off to find it on catch up.

Elendon · 28/05/2017 22:43

I'm a little conflicted about what thread I should post on so I will copy and paste this.

It's very true to the book so far (the film was a little flimsy on the details). There are truly horrific things yet to come. This series is not a quiet stroll to the shops for oranges.

I still feel the utter fear I got when reading this as a young 20s woman. And I'm now in my fifties and probably a 'Martha'.

Great strong production and the acting is A*.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 28/05/2017 22:47

Although it deviates I found it kept to the spirit of the book. I think they have to move things around in order for a television audience to follow what is going on. If you remember the book jumps all over the place to echo how Offred's mind is jumping from one place to another, it's a useful tool in both books and film. However film/television needs some element of beginning, middle and end for audiences to follow what is going on and so as not to scare them off. They need to them in with an understandable plot straight away and keep advertisers happy with retained audience numbers.

Thisisouting · 28/05/2017 22:51

Love it!

Slightly concerned I had to explain to my husband that the handmaid's were not "allowed" to do that group thing (trying not to give spoilers) and then we had to have a discussion about coercive control HmmConfused

colouringinagain · 28/05/2017 22:52

Very good, but I think I'll record so I can skip ads - too many, v disruptive!

WingMirrorSpider · 28/05/2017 23:00

I thought it was great. The design and cinematography were beautiful and the acting was amazing.

Did anyone else love the hat/headdress things (wings?) they wore outside? They frame the face quite beautifully .

SomethingOnce · 28/05/2017 23:04

Careful what you wish for...

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/05/2017 23:06

Nah, M&S will probably reimagine them out in pink polyester, to accesorise the current star of their clothing range.

mizu · 28/05/2017 23:06

Favourite book by a fab author - loved this tonight, I could easily watch again. Can't wait till next week.

Got an old hardback copy of the book but love the look of that one with the red pages.

ShoesHaveSouls · 28/05/2017 23:58

I thought it was excellent - really chilling. I want to go and wake up my DD and hug her. It was a little boy in the film/book though wasn;t it? A toddler? Or am I remembering that totally wrong?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 29/05/2017 00:01

She had a girl in the book.

Ontheboardwalk · 29/05/2017 00:49

Posted this on other thread. Am really upset that Mayday hasn't been said, I thought I'd just missed it. Again that's an important part of the book

Read the book as part of my A Levels many moons ago and loved it. Really enjoyed 90% of the new series, brilliant acting, however felt cheated at the Particicution scene. To me that was a major interaction in the book between Ofred and Ofglen and one that stuck with me. Seems to have been lost in translation somewhere...

cushioncovers · 29/05/2017 09:16

Watched it last night. Haven't read the book although it was on my list not sure whether to now. Can I ask is the infertility and handmaidens suppose to be a world wide phenomenon or is it just in America?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 29/05/2017 09:20

I thought Mayday did come up in the walk they showed, but maybe I missed it.

They did whisper, but then again, it's understandable.

PacificDogwod · 29/05/2017 09:28

My favourite scares-me-shitless book.

I've not seen it yet on TV, it's recorded, waiting for the kids to be in bed tonight... Glad to read it's not awful.
