Anyone else planning on watching this at 9pm on channel 4?

OP posts:
AdalindSchade · 28/05/2017 22:04

Yes moira is her friend from the party

SuperFlyHigh · 28/05/2017 22:05

Dumbledores Moyra is the black lady.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 28/05/2017 22:05

I think it's in the spirit of the book so far, we're getting glimpses of the contrast between her old and her current life.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/05/2017 22:05

10 episodes seems like a lot.

Anothernewnn · 28/05/2017 22:07

Not bad so far. As adaptations go. But I never understand why they (adaptations) have to deviate so far in the first place anyway - I mean, the books aren't as popular as they are because the story lacks anything right?

HumphreyCobblers · 28/05/2017 22:09

I thought the whole "If thy right eye offends thee, pluck it out" was an addition entirely in keeping with the feeling of the novel. It was v shocking though.

I LOVE it so far. Really well done.

lightcola · 28/05/2017 22:10

An eye? Does she mean spy?

thistlewine · 28/05/2017 22:11

An eye in the house? I don't remember that bit from the book and they haven't said mayday either

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/05/2017 22:11

An "eye" is a spy.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 28/05/2017 22:11

Informer.

HumphreyCobblers · 28/05/2017 22:11

TV has a different rhythm to a novel and is split up into episodes that might not correspond with chapter breaks.

It is fine to change things a bit, the key is not to do it stupidly.

AdalindSchade · 28/05/2017 22:11

'Eyes of the republic' I think

MusicToMyEars800 · 28/05/2017 22:13

That was really good, I can't wait to see the next one.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 28/05/2017 22:14

It definitely does justice to the book imo. I kept having to take breaks from reading it because it brought up such strong emotions, and I felt a bit like that watching this.

SuperFlyHigh · 28/05/2017 22:15

Another but to a viewing public if it's more sensational and with a younger better looking Commander (whose name was guessed at the end of the book with another man) and a more shocking storyline you'll pull more viewing figures.

Plus there was a film of this made a few years ago but it was supposed to be so bad so I never saw it. If it stuck strictly to the story maybe it was bad, who knows?

AlwaysCcakeTime · 28/05/2017 22:16

Well that was fucking terrifying..

I've read the book.

I think this so far is an amazing adaption

Doobigetta · 28/05/2017 22:16

Samira Wiley (Moira) is amazing. She can break your heart with one look.

MrsDoylesTeabags · 28/05/2017 22:17

Just finished watching it, I enjoyed it. I've never read the book. Does it follow the same plot as the book?

SuperFlyHigh · 28/05/2017 22:18

I think however just now I saw 2 Martha's which pleases me, as they did or were just now whispering and gossiping about offred. Hope that stays.

The ice cream reference UK viewers wouldn't get it, in the book they're a special name of topping/sprinkles and maybe younger USA viewers wouldn't know the name... As dated, so there's a different reference. I understand that change though!

AWendyAteMyFitbit · 28/05/2017 22:18

You Don't Own Me - brilliant music choice at the end.

Shitalopram · 28/05/2017 22:18

Bloody adverts really spoiled it

MadameSzyszkoBohush · 28/05/2017 22:20

Was that Margaret Atwood making a cameo? As the woman who hit Offred in the circle, for not pointing at the woman (forgotten her name).

SuperFlyHigh · 28/05/2017 22:20

MrsDoyles it moreorless follows the same plot as the book, a few changes and I think they've switched sequences round from the book to the TV adaptation a bit.

Get the book if you like. It's just as gripping as the TV version.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 28/05/2017 22:21

I thought that was Margaret Atwood as well.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 28/05/2017 22:23

Google confirms it was.
