Looking forward to watching this tonight. Feel it might be one to watch with your teenagers..

OP posts:
WayfaringStranger · 16/05/2017 22:10

I'm watching on delay and I cannot believe they called these girls "child prostitues". :(

chosenone · 16/05/2017 22:10

I am stunned!! Just shocking. The way Holly was treated by the Police/Social services! ... compared to recent scenes in Broadchurch where the victim was treated with dignity and compassion, by female staff! The overtness of the abusers beggars belief!

thefemaleJoshLyman · 16/05/2017 22:11

Fundamentally often the girls had little real idea about healthy relationships and to a certain extent thought this was usual. They were groomed to believe they needed the men. Grooming is a big issue for all teens still.

It was very powerful and I thought very well acted.

SuperFlyHigh · 16/05/2017 22:14

Very well acted but grim viewing.

Why are social work budgets being cut so much if this still can happen?

This should be compulsory viewing in all schools including (but would never happen) Muslim faith schools.

Those poor, poor girls and their poor families.

I hope other prisoners treat these scumbags of excuses for men really badly in prison.

user1494670108 · 16/05/2017 22:15

It was the most powerful thing I have watched on telly in a very long time.
I watched half of it through my fingers and am not sure I can face part 2 tomorrow, was almost hoping it would be a week.
Such a fucking awful situation and it happened again in Rotherham - please someone reassure me it's not still happening?

CremeEggThief · 16/05/2017 22:15

Excellent, if harrowing to watch. It's appalling how so many adults knew or strongly suspected what might have been going on, and did nothing. I don't care how over-stretched they were, they failed in their duty of care to those girls. They let them down, again and again. Sad

JigglyTuff · 16/05/2017 22:16

Did some of you miss when Amber went round to Holly's house and told her that 'Daddy' was going to come round to her house and rape her little sisters and burn the house down after Holly reported him for raping her the first time? Confused

Ineedagoodusername · 16/05/2017 22:16

Superflyhigh why indeed are social services budgets being cut? Cos the tory government doesn't give a fuck. Our budgets are cut every year.

Instasista · 16/05/2017 22:17

To be fair though superfly the area (s) where this happened had enormous amounts of cash thrown at them after this all finally came to light to fix processes, aid communication etc. Money was most def not a problem. Not saying that it was well spent or that other areas don't need the same mind

Ineedagoodusername · 16/05/2017 22:17

Jigglyturf exactly.

SuperFlyHigh · 16/05/2017 22:18

Ineed well that's a good reason (not that I'd vote for them anyway) not to vote Tory!

Jiggly no I saw that. I think most of us did. Angry Sad

Ineedagoodusername · 16/05/2017 22:18

User149 it's happening all over the country but since this case in 2012 there is much much greater awareness.

SuperFlyHigh · 16/05/2017 22:19

user sadly I think it is still happening.

And it's not limited to Muslims either, any race can do this. Illegal child abuse etc, child prostitution in some form (because that's more or less what it is).

Ineedagoodusername · 16/05/2017 22:20

It's not prostitution superflyhigh it's child abuse.

Ineedagoodusername · 16/05/2017 22:20

All child abuse is illegal!!

JigglyTuff · 16/05/2017 22:21

Just was wondering why some people are saying they don't understand why she kept going back.

Brilliant acting from the whole cast.

Ruby2202 · 16/05/2017 22:21

Truely terrible to watch. It's so hard to comprehend that this did and still is happening in real life. Amazing acting and so hard to watch.

I agree, a bit clunky though. Some bits didn't make sense to me. I assume the girls were already being groomed when they met holly. But she wasn't particularly vulnerable was she? She had two parents, loving home provided, atleast to her siblings anyway. Why did those other girls befriend her and bring her into it when they knew what was happening? Why didn't holly question for a minute why these men were giving them free food/drink?

Why did she go with the other girl after the first rape reported to the police back to them? I get she was scared but couldn't she have told her family and just disappeared? Later on it said that one of the other regular girls no longer lived in Rochdale.

I am also finding her parents actions hard to comprehend, especially her dad. It seemed like he didn't believe her when she reported the rape. all he did was shout and worry about her sisters seeing her in a state. The
Mum seemed sympathetic but then let her go and left her at the house when she wouldn't come out. Surely you d move heaven and earth to get your child out of that situation.

SuperFlyHigh · 16/05/2017 22:22

Ineed yes it is child abuse but the way one of the girls gets the other girls, the men asking for it and payment exchanging hands, surely that's some form of child prostition and child abuse.

I mean the girls aren't street walking in the usual prostition terms.

Hepzibar · 16/05/2017 22:23

Social services and police hold the power. Now and then.

Then - it was exactly as portrayed. This program has affected me much more than I thought it would. I've had 'lifestyle choices' 'she's making her own choices' thrown at me.

Now - it's better certainly by Police. In Rochdale they are fantastic and thoroughly investigate every case and believe the victim.

Social Services - well, depends who you get and if your referral meets their 'threshold'. That's all I am saying.

Hamwidge · 16/05/2017 22:24

I'm from Rochdale and the same age as girl A and it was very hard to watch. I still see groups of teens hanging round the takeaways and taxi ranks now.

Ineedagoodusername · 16/05/2017 22:24

facepalm

Some of the attitudes on this thread explains why these girls weren't believed. Angry

TizzyDongue · 16/05/2017 22:25

Disturbing and harrowing - also frustrating and uttering incomprehensible why despite knowing nothing was being done

SuperFlyHigh · 16/05/2017 22:25

Ineed sorry its sex trafficking not prostitution.

I wasn't sure of the correct terminology.

This has really angered and upset me.

Hepzibar · 16/05/2017 22:26

Superfly there is no such thing as child prostitution. It's Abuse.

SuburbanRhonda · 16/05/2017 22:26

But she wasn't particularly vulnerable was she? She had two parents, loving home provided, atleast to her siblings anyway.

She was bored at home - her dad expected her to do chores and she just wanted to have fun. At the start, being with the other girls was fun and the men in the takeaway seemed kind and generous. It was only later that they made it clear they wanted something in return.
